5 Stars Heriot-Watt Uni Review with images 05/08/2007

    Advantages Advantages Lovely Campus

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some modules didn't seem relevant on course

Four years ago, I left school and started the hunt for a suitable university to go to, however I was only really torn between two. This was because I knew that I wanted to move back up Edinburgh, and I also knew that I wanted to do Information Technology. This left Heriot-Watt (actually spelt with 1 ‘R’) or Napier – the two in Edinburgh that seemed to offer this particular subject. I was allowed to apply to six universities; however I ended up choosing some of these by shutting my eyes and randomly pointing my finger at the map! Oops, not really ideal is it… Anyway, after looking at both of ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent campus with superb facilities

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing major

It has been a little while since I posted a review and that is because I have just started university. I am currently in my first year at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh studying Mechanical Engineering. This review is based on my experience of the university. While at university I am staying on campus and therefore will be able to comment on the university, its facilities, the course I am doing and the accommodation. Heriot Watt University has two campuses in Scotland. This review is only based on the main campus which is in Edinburgh. Heriot Watt is the eighth oldest higher education ... more

Advantages Advantages Friendly, cute, safe, cheap, small classes.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Isolated, no blokes, crap halls, few shops.

I am in my second year at SBC (Scottish Borders Campus) doing Clothing, & I wanted to advise you of the pitfalls & rewards of the place. Firstly, it might seem obvious but this is a really small campus (about 1000 students) & it affects everything that goes on here. It is set in a small town that formerly served the textile industry with Mills & factories most of which are now extinct. There are 3 night clubs here, 'Bonds' is the most popular because of its drinks promos & lively atmosphere. There are plenty of pubs for such a wee place though & the new 'Hunters Hall' is surprisingly ... more

If you are looking to do a distance learning Master of Business Administration degree course but have committments on your time then the Herriot-Watt MBA is excellent. Unlike MBAs from other business schools you do not have to attend summer schools using up your annual vacation entitlement. Also if you are not certain of your demands from your fulltime employment the H-W MBA is ideal as you do not have assignments to complete by set dates. Unfortunately there is a downside and that is you have to be completely self-motivated as you do not have anybody chasing you for your work. If you are in ... more

Advantages Advantages Flexible degrees, well respected degrees, nice new halls of res, good teaching staff

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far out of the city, bad IT infrastructure, small library

I had a good four years at Heriot Watt and don't regret going there for university, but for a university that apparently makes so much money from its research and attracts so many foreign students that pay top dollar to be there, you would think that more money could be spent on facilities for the students. The library is small and has too few books of the same type when a whole class is trying to research the same subject. The computer facilities are few and far between and often you have to wait for ages to get on a computer, parking facilities can be attrocious and when a conference is on ... more

    Advantages Advantages Flexibility, price, content

    Disadvantages Disadvantages AMBA accreditation

If you are looking for an accredited, flexible and international MBA distance learning programme, Heriot-Watt is a very interesting option. It is no easy option and it can become quite lonely since interactions are very limited. However, you'll be able to continue working full time and still complete the programme in 2-3 years. I did it in two years, studying an average of 40 hours per week. There is no travel involved since HW is very accomodating in finding a exam centre near your home town. The learning materials are clear and extremely relevant to business life. The cost? a fraction of ... more

A massive percentage of first year students at Herriot-Watt are living on the campus. The first year is entirely geared up for these students. I am not simply talking about the Freshers’ Fayre. I mean things like the timetable. If you are looking at a fifty-minute bus trip in from Edinburgh (rush hour traffic, of course) then you are also looking at a very early rise if you wish to make the nine o’clock lectures. As most first years are on campus the timetable tends to give the first years these dreaded nine o’clock lectures. If you are a first year and you happen to live off campus - tough ... more

Advantages Advantages Nice campus, newer halls are good

Disadvantages Disadvantages It's a degree-mill, campus is in the middle of nowhere.

In the two and a half years I've been here I've got the impression that all this university is a degree-mill out to squeeze money from students. They let in foreign students who can't really speak or write fluent english (which isn't really their fault) and expect them to write theses which are then "edited" (for want of a better word) by their supervisors. The Riccarton campus is in the middle on nowhere (literally, I'm not joking) and it can get very boring on campus. The students union is okay if you want cheap alcohol but nothing more. The bus service isn't much to speak of and if you live ... more

Advantages Advantages Can get where you want to go!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard work by yourself.

When you don't complete your education at the right age and you are facing your mid thirties with no prospects in sight, the idea of distance learning is a very appealing idea! With two children now growing up, the long, long days of being a housewife were stretching before me and I decided that it was time to do something about it. On line I searched for distance learning courses. I have always wanted to teach but having no formal qualifications apart from a few 'o' levels, it did not seem an option. There were not really any distance learning courses I could find that would satisfy my needs ... more
