Advantages Advantages Cheaper than a skip, more convenient, easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages May have to wait for collection, bags only available in a few places

Over the Easter weekend this year, we decided that it would be a great idea to build a nice raised bed down one side of our back garden. All well and good, but it involved moving the shed (and painting it blue, but that's another story...) into another corner of our small urban paradise. So, we waded in and created a new base for the shed, moved it to it's new position and started to remove the slabs it had been on previously. TWO TONNES of rubble later, we were beginning to wonder where we were going to put it all. The original plan of breaking it up and leaving it in the raised bed for ... more

Advantages Advantages Handy size, convenient collection, easy to buy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not big enough for larger jobs

I have been undertaking a huge renovation job on my hundred year old home, and as its an ongoing process, I have been hiring skips on an ad hoc basis. Thinking that these were costing me a fortune I thought I might try the Hippobag and see if what my friend, a small independent builder, was telling me was true. I purchased the bag at a local branch of Travis Perkins for £10, which was an easy and trouble free experience. The bag was on a stand - which was nearly empty. So that must be a good sign. I took the bag home and filled it full of building waste and old bricks and tiles... I was ... more

Advantages Advantages Very convenient. Good and fast service.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Price for the mega bag was quite expensive.

Over the Easter break I decided to demolish a typically normal small shed at the end of my garden (and replace it with a bigger one but that's a different story). I had to solve the problem of removing the waste once I had sledge hammered it to pieces and the local tip near me will not accept 'treated' wood. Plus transportation of the waste wood is limited to small loads in the car.. enter Hippo Bag. I've seen them in my local Wickes store and checked the Hippo Bag website to ensure that I was okay throwing the old shed in to the bag and good news, waste wood was not listed in the prohibited ... more

Advantages Advantages No waiting for a skip - buy the bag and use it straight away

Disadvantages Disadvantages Collected in five days - I must be too impatient!

I used a HIPPOBAG recently when I had my old bathroom ripped out and a new one put in. I had arranged everything with an independent fitter and hadn't even thought about how the old bathroom suite would be thrown away...i assumed the fitter would take it away, but apparently they can't use the council dump and when he arrived to start work he asked me where he should put all the old stuff! I didn't have time to get a skip (and to be honest wouldn't have know where to start with that anyway!) and I just had visions of the old toilet having pride of place in my front garden!!! Not the kind of ... more

Advantages Advantages cheaper than a skip, total cost less than £60

Disadvantages Disadvantages you must keep the road clear between the bag and the truck,

I used a midi hippo bag to clear out some rubble that the previous occupant had hidden behind a wooden barrier. I placed the on the path leading to my terraced house on a busy street. I was worried that they would consider my low fence a barrier but that was not an issue. One point you have to remember, is they will not lift the bag over a car. They will send you a text the day before hand if you ask so that you can put up a sign or something to stop people parking in front of your bag. They said they would collect "within 5 days" I would have preferred if they could have been a bit more ... more

Advantages Advantages Convenient and cost effective

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Still thinking......................

I too had been searching the Internet for ideas on how to best get rid of my garden waste and was lucky enough to stumble across a previous review. I didn't really want to fill my car up with loads of dirt and grass, so I thought about hiring a skip but after the horror stories I had heard from my friends and family I was very keen to avoid getting one. When I read a previous review I just had to try one. I went to my local Homebase and sure enough there in front of me was a big yellow stand full of hippobags, I purchased the midi bag. I took it home and opened it up; it was larger than I had ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to buy and use

Disadvantages Disadvantages Collection is difficult or impossible if you live in a street with parked cars

We recently renovated our front garden and thought Hippo Bags provided an economic and convenient alternative to skip hire. That was until we tried to arrange collection. Like many people who live in a busy urban area there are a large number of cars parked in our street. We don't usually know who owns the parked cars and have little control over who parks outside our house. It's a fairly normal picture for city dwellers but this appears to cause Hippo an insurmountable problem. The people from Hippo arrived early this morning to collect our bag and refused to take it. The bag is within the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Simple to use

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I've had a hippo bag collected and felt that it warrants a good review. I bought my bag from Wickes and filled it with wood scraps and broken furniture. It has been collected this morning and I never even heard the lorry take it away. I booked my collection online on Thursday of last week and have to say that even the booking system is simple to use. A leaflet in Wickes prompted me to use the service which said if I book in my bag for collection before 31st May I could be in with a chance to win a day's spring clean for my home if I qouted bigclearout08 so that I did and fingers crossed that I ... more

I have used the Hippo Bag and have to say that the service was superb. I bought the bag from B&Q and didn't finish filling the bag until two weeks later. I phoned to book in the collection and the call staff were really friendly and told me my bag would be collected in the next 5 working days. The bag was actually collected the following day whilst I was at work! I've receievd an email from the company stating that if I book another bag in before the end of November and quote spree07, they will enter me in for a competition to win a £500 shopping spree in Tesco. Not sure if anyone else is ... more

Advantages Advantages none, did find same service for less though!

Disadvantages Disadvantages too expensive, dont pick up!

I used a Hippo Bag about two month ago, the bag was removed by a third party as it was not collected for so long!, i called them up, stating it needed to go, but in the end i had to look about for someone else to do it! Every cloud has a silver lining as they say!, When it was removed, the waste carrier stated he collects bags in this area all the time, for barneybags i think he said. I bought one of these from Pompey Hardware in Fawcett Rd, on Monday just gone, it was £5.99 and had a flyer thing inside with all the info etc...I had to look at the website, and actually emailed regarding ... more
