Advantages: Should make you laugh Disadvantages: none, unless you don't like laughing
Very, VERY funny book by the late Douglas Adams, that I first read after seeing the tv series when I was aged around 13.
The book follows the adventures of a human named Arthur Dent, following the destruction of the planet Earth. Prior to the destruction he and an alien friend (Ford Prefect) managed to hitch a lift with a passing space ship.
I have since read the other books in the series (The restaurant at the End of the Unniverse, Life the ...

...sorely missed.
I first came across Hitchhikers back when I was ten. Once a week in English we sat and listened to another episode of the radio plays.
Almost from the first few minutes I was hooked. The radio plays were superb but there is nothing better than using your own imagination with a Douglas Adams book.
Although the genre is humour or comedy, there runs a very serious undertone of right and wrong. The real wizardry of Douglas's writing, ...

Advantages: Brilliant read, extremely funny, just buy it OK? Disadvantages: None!
Douglas Adams’ ‘Hitch-hiker’s Guide’-trilogy consists of The Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, The Universe and Everything, Goodbye, and Thanks for All the Fish and Mostly Harmless. These five books together lend a whole new meaning to the word ‘trilogy’.
The first book starts off with the Earth being destroyed by Vogon warships to make way for a new hyper-space bypass. Shortly before the destruction ...

...favourtie is of course The hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I have read this book so many times I find myself chuckling before I get to a funny part, just because I know what is going to happen! The book revolves around a man named Arthur Dent who lives on Earth, oblivious to the fact his best friend is an alien. Ford Prefect, his best friend, rescues Arthur when the Earth is demolished to make way for a hypergalactic bypass. Well, these things happen. ...

Advantages: 42 Disadvantages: My name, his name
You can't tell from my user name, but I share the last name of a certain character from this series of books (hint : it's not Slartibartfast).
Consequently, throughout my time at school, university and indeed, at work, people have -upon meeting me for the first time - uttered the immortal phrase..."isn't that the name of the guy from Hitch..?"
They tend to stop at this point to pick themselves up from the ground, following my swift jab to the ...

Advantages: Massively entertaining Disadvantages: Only made a five book series
From the minute Arthur Dent crawls out of bed to see yellow things outside, to when Zaphod orders the computer to take them to the nearest place to eat and takes them to the end of time, this book has me in stiches. The Hitch Hikers guide to the Galaxy is the definitive guide to pointless information in the universe. When first given the book I had doubts about it's content, Sci-Fi and comedy?, but Douglas Adams has merged cynical, sarsastic humour ...

Advantages: Extremely Entertaining and Funny Disadvantages: Get Repetitive when you get to the fifth book
...five parts, as its called-The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the end of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, So Long and thanks for all the Fish and Mostly Harmless. They are quite expensive-about £5.00 each I think, though you can buy then in a single hardbook copy for only about £15.00 and if you buy them used, they are cheap.
The Science Fiction Comedy genre of the book is hard to write-the balance between the ...

Advantages: The book is written beautifully Disadvantages: There is some very random references which some reders might not appriciate.
Douglas Adams first offering in the "trilogy of four" is an amazing insight into the crazy world of his head. When I first picked up the book it seemed dull on first sight but past the cover and the reader is literally transported into another world- or galaxy.
The book describes the journies of Arthur Dent, a lovable Earth man who soon learns that the earth is not alone in the universe. One morning Arthur wakes up with a headache and a hangover, ...

Advantages: Great story and very very very funny Disadvantages: ----
The Hitchhikers Guide casts me back to my childhood. Our teacher would make us sit once a week and listen to the radio plays and I was instantly hooked with the blend of off the wall writing and dazzling sci-fi. It really was something to get a young boys imagination running wild.
Despite the comedy/humour genre of Hitchhikers Guide, it gives a serious message of right and wrong, which is something sorely missed in society today.

The original hitchhiker books were about the awfulness (and decency) of English life in the 70's and early 80,s. It was about Zen and about athism. Spotting these things flattered the reader and I have no doubt other readers saw other things within it too.
Hollywood understood the smugness of the book far too well- I was worried as soon as I heard Stephen Fry was involved. Unfortunately its genuine cleverness was unacceptable to Hollywood. All ...

Sense of humour failure Aurthur Dent has made friends with a being from another galaxy called Ford Prefect. Ford, during his travels through many galaxy's in his quest to write a book entitled "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" has ended up being on earth a little longer than expected - he came down just to get an overall picture of earth, one which he thought would take him all of five minutes, only to find that he couldn't hitch hike himself ...
