Advantages Advantages Well-written reviews lead to positive ratings of value to consumers, and may earn you some money

Disadvantages Disadvantages It won't be a lot of money, and you might disagree with me

Everyone has an opinion. That's at least part of why we're writing on Ciao. So long as you stick to the guidelines (no plagiarism, no racism etc) and write something about the product whose category you're writing in, you can write whatever you like. Ciao does not censor reviews, so if you came here to rant because of a faulty product, or to rave about the latest CD you bought, that's OK. You can write anywhere between 120 and (I believe) 5000 words of your choosing, and submit your review. Do make sure it's in the right category, however, or it won't be read by people who might be interested ... more

Advantages Advantages You get to read/write an interesting and informative Games review

    Disadvantages Disadvantages You may disagree

I can't help feeling that a review telling other people how to write is at best pompous and at worst darn right patronising. Nevertheless I feel duty bound to share my wisdom in what I feel makes a good, informative and readable synopsis of a game. Remember though this is MY PERSONAL OPINION, if you do not agree then fine, as long as you write to the best of your ability and with passion then it's all good. Introduction For me, a good game review is comprised of several short paragraphs detailing the various facets of the game in a friendly flowing manner without lapsing into jargon or cyber ... more

    Advantages Advantages Big Fun

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Can Be Addictive

Telling someone how to write opinions on Ciao is a bit like telling your grandmother how to suck eggs, and ultimately as pointless as everyone has their own way of doing it. However there are some universal rules that most people stick to in some form or another, be warned though that writing opinions on ciao can be highly ADDICTVTIVE. There are many forms of addiction, alcohol drugs, smoking, but one of the most addictive vices known to mankind in recent years has been found on the pages of Ciao where hapless victims have been found in a terrible state, ranting, raving and reviewing in an ... more

Advantages Advantages It tells you how to write VH Book, Movie, or Game reviews... and how to write really BAD ones, too :-)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesn't tell you anything else!

WARNING ONE - this is an amalgam of not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR advice guides I wrote for Epinions a while ago. They're a little abridged but it's still pretty long. WARNING TWO - this is most useful if you write (or plan to write) BOOK, MOVIE, or GAME reviews. If you don't… then it is far less helpful!! If you are not dissuaded from continuing by those warnings, please read on… ***************** This covers how to write a VERY HELPFUL Book, Movie, or Game review. Between the three I've written over 200 reviews now so I'm fairly well up on what makes a good review in those ... more

Advantages Advantages You may find my pondering helpful and/or interesting

    Disadvantages Disadvantages You may not

I’ve paused to ponder for a while before putting fingers to my keyboard on this, my 100th opinion on Ciao. You might think that after reading and rating thousands of opinions and making 99 contributions of my own, I would have ready-formed freely-flowing advice to offer on how to write opinions, but when I reflect on opinions I have read and valued, and those I have written, and I look at the plethora of advice already available in this and other sections on Ciao, I wonder how helpful some of it really is. I am rather glad I didn’t find most of it until after I’d written a few opinions and ... more

Advantages Advantages Hopeful higher ratings and ultimately greater satisfaction in your work

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard work involved

Background I have been writing on Ciao for well over a year now and like nothing better than reading an excellent review. Where someone has gone to the trouble of sharing both their knowledge and their opinion on something. I may not always agree with there view but then that the great thing about opinion we all have one. I really wasn’t sure if I should write on this subject at all. As I don’t feel qualified to advise others how to write a good opinion. All I can really do is tell you how I approach it and then you can decide if any of it is relevant to your own style of reviews. I am not by ... more

Advantages Advantages Opinions, information and pleasure

Disadvantages Disadvantages Waiting for reads and comments

In writing this review, I am not advocating a specific format or style for writing a review. On the contrary, I am advocating individuality and the development of your own style. I do not claim to be an expert on the subject or even good at it. The most important thing I have learnt whilst on Ciao is the importance of being true to yourself. Develop your own style, keep to your commitments and principles and do it your way. ***WHY WRITE A REVIEW?*** FOR PLEASURE: All the reviews written for Ciao are done from choice. There is no obligation or pressure to write reviews. It is not a career and ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Time consuming with little financial gain

Welcome to the institution of Ciao. There are many ways to go about life here on Ciao but this is an attempt to make your stay enjoyable and worthwhile. Life around here can be immensely addictive and you can find new friends and become informed about products you've never tried yet or not even heard of. *** WHY ARE YOU HERE? *** One thing to make clear though is that you can never class your time on Ciao as a form of a second income, yes you do get paid but it is very little. Since June 2004, I've not got close to earning £100. You can get paid for completing surveys but it all depends on how ... more

Advantages Advantages Ciao might get more book opinions.

Disadvantages Disadvantages I might talk utter tosh.

AKA How To Write A Book Opinion... I always think books are wee bit different from many of the things reviewed around here. I also think there's a bit of a knack to writing a successful opinion about a book. Lots of people say they feel rather intimidated by the thought. But y'know, it's like anything, once you've got the knack it's a breeze, really it is. And I don't think there are nearly enough opinions on books submitted hereabouts so I thought I'd dispel some of that supposed mystique and tell you about the sort of opinion on a book that I'd like to read. Hopefully, you'll all start ... more

Advantages Advantages Seems to work for me

Disadvantages Disadvantages Might not for you

Having spent a few years away from the site I thought that I’d lost the Ciao bug, but once more I find myself regularly writing reviews about all my favourite and most loathed products. Once more I’m struggling to find the balance between information and opinion and now I’m going to share my opinion of how I try to write ‘good’ reviews. The first thing I do is make sure that I’ve really had experience of using whatever it is that I’m going to review. I recently got a new mobile phone, but I refused to even put finger to keyboard until I’d used it for over a month. I don’t think a day or even a ... more
