    Advantages Advantages Democracy

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cameron

Time Magazine did a frivolous but intriguing article a few years back that examined the disproportionate number of high ranking politicians and presidents of the world who's Christian names all seemed to began with early letters in the alphabet, the theory being these guys were picked from lists on looks and blandness (they would do what they are told) over talent and ideology (they would have their own mind) early on in their careers and fast-tracked that way, start on A and as soon as a good looking/ personable guy pops up that's your party leader! Clegg, Cameron and Blair seemed to back ... more

Advantages Advantages May not be in your short term interests

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No class war!

When there's an election coming up, or something else of interest in the news, I seem to be constantly explaining to people that my politics degree is in theory and not current affairs. Nonetheless, I do have ideas on society generally and the democratic process - albeit generally in the abstract. In fact, that was the topic of my thesis - I'm sure regular readers will have some idea - but having submitted that today, I can now turn my attention to the up-coming election. Actually, it was a recent argument with someone over how to vote that inspired me to put finger to keyboard, and argue the ... more

Advantages Advantages Greater Policing, less red tape, reduction in central government and cleaner hospitals

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

As May 5th draws ever closer I'm sure I stand with a great number of the population who are increasingly sick and tired of television schedules being congested with party political broadcasts and the news covering nothing more than a select few bickering over who is right and who is wrong, who is lying and who is telling the truth. Personally, despite trying to register to vote in my new constituency I have been unable to get onto the Electoral Register in time to vote at this election, but if I could, I would vote for the Conservative Party. Not because they are good people and pay me on a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Liberal and Democratic

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unlikely to win this time

This is not a party political broadcast on behalf of the Liberal Democrats. I write not as a party loyalist but an uncommitted neutral, suspicious of all politicians and sceptical about their promises. Nevertheless, when General Elections come round the outcome is going to affect all our lives for the next four or five years. So we owe it to ourselves to take a close look at what’s on offer, and to try to pick the least bad option available. In my view, on this occasion the least bad option is the Liberal Democrats. Why? Three main reasons: ~ ~ Who they are ~ What they stand for ~ What a vote ... more

Advantages Advantages This is my personal view of politics

Disadvantages Disadvantages I am probably going to get slated for it.

I will start off by saying that at this point I have absolutely no idea who I will vote for in the upcoming election. Why? Let me try and explain. Issues about politics Firstly I have a problem with the way politics as a whole is conducted at the highest level in this country. I find it amazing how the running of this fine country of ours is brought down in value by the laughable word games our so-called representatives play with our lives. Have you ever listened to Prime Ministers question time or any other debate for that matter? All they try and do is put down the opposition, for the sake ... more

    Advantages Advantages Read the opinion

Disadvantages Disadvantages Don't Read the Opinion

The spectacle of frantic electioneering is once again gripping media coverage and public (dis)interest. Mere days away from the re-emergence of the ballot boxes in village halls up and down the nation and the tension is understandably gripping, or is it? Will this election actually conclusively offer the British public a majority based popular government? Will another party be able to topple Blair's presidential regime? Can we anticipate an election run-in full of promoting policies or simply vanquishing political foes? The answers are all far too predictable, but alas I will once again add my ... more

Advantages Advantages You may make a difference.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages You probably won't.

As the election rapidly approaches I remain largely apathetic to all candidates. I trust neither Blair nor Howard and although Kennedy is a nice guy that does not a leader make. The minor parties are all one policy views be it the environmental stance of the Greens, the anti-Europe UKIP or the BNP with its extremes on immigration. As yet I am still in the position were I will not vote. I am surprised at the general response to this, which ranges from, "It's your duty to vote people have died for it", "To not vote is a wasted vote" and "Vote for someone so the other lot don't get in". Let me ... more

Advantages Advantages Show you care - vote!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The voting age

As a frustrated 17 year old missing out on voting for the first time in the election on May the 5th by a couple of weeks, I am perhaps not best placed to be posting a comment on 'who to vote for'. However I feel, from my own experiences anyway, that my generation have strong views and take interest in the political future of the country. Maybe my view is biased by having an interest myself, and studying Politics for A level, but I feel the fact 16 and 17 year olds don't get the vote, when most are either paying taxes, or studying for an extra two years, and then looking to go to University ... more

Advantages Advantages It probably doesn't matter who wins

Disadvantages Disadvantages People forcing reasons why it does

After all my reviews and nonsense over the course of this last year since writing reviews on Ciao some people may want to know my take on the General Election - so here it is: First I should explain the title - In Palestine (yes it does exist) and Israel and perhaps Zimbabwe and South Africa it MATTERS who is in power. In Britain it does not really matter. The difference between one party in power in Zimbabwe and another is the difference between being in fear of your life and being OK. In Britain it is the difference between having an extra £5 per year in your pocket and having Philippino ... more

    Advantages Advantages All those promises

Disadvantages Disadvantages All those broken promises

I am not very politically minded as you will probably realise once you've read this review. But I do believe it is important to cast your vote and I have always done so. Therefor I have the right to complain. Being 50 years of age I've seen a few governments come and go, and don't see any particular advantage in any of the major parties. Both the Tories and Labour have made many promises, some kept some broken. So it basically comes down to who I trust the most, and quite frankly I just don't trust either of them so perhaps it's time to think seriously about giving someone else a kick of the ... more
