HD pictures without monthly subsrciptions

Advantages: Excellent picture quality, intuitive epg, easy setup
Disadvantages: None

I purchased this box initially for the Euro 2008 Matches which were shown on ITV HD as well as BBC HD. Upon opening the box, the first thing I noticed was how small the foxsat is. To give an idea I'd say it's 3/4 the size of a standard Sky digibox. The unit itself is supplied with the remote control, batteries, scart cable, component cable, and a reasonable quality HDMI cable. Connection of the box is very simple with just one connection to the satellite ...
...you are using a HD ready TV, which you should be if purchasing a HD receiver). After a small delay waiting for the box to boot up, the unit automatically searches for firmware updates and scans for all available channels. You have to enter your postcode during the setup process in order for the box to determine your regional channels (such as ITV and BBC). After storing the channels you can view the full epg listings or show a quick list of all ...

Simple yet effective box with HD

Advantages: Smart, compact, picture quality
Disadvantages: Slow, volume issues

I have been using this box now for around 9 months and have found it relatively easy to use. The EPG is not as easy or as clear as Sky's offering, but it works. I particularly like the way in which is shows how long a program has been on and the resolution of the broadcast. The box itself is actually very small and streamlined, hardly takes up any room at all - very impressive. Most of the buttons are hidden under a flap on the front of the player ...
...display that is easy to read. The remote is a nice size in the hand, not too small or too chunky with a nice weight to it. The layout is OK, although operating the EPG effectively does take time to master. The unit is simple to set up and install all the necessary channels. Once you put your post code in, it will tune itself and store all the channels. It generally updates itself every couple of weeks (it will ask you first) and only takes around ...

A Happy Humax Viewer

Advantages: ease of setting up. Good on screen info. easy to use.
Disadvantages: none that I have found

...waste of time. The Humax box has been a revelation. We watch our programs all the time through it now. My first impression was its small neat size, not dominant at all in the cabinet. Living in the "sticks" I was stuck with 4 channels and quite poor picture quality. I only have an SD TV but the picture quality has improved considerably. It is sharp with good colours. My last set had manual set up but the Humax is fully automatic. I had trouble inputting ...
...unless you are a bit late for a program. I find the handset easy to use, well laid out and comfortable to hold. On screen information very helpful. All in all, I am very hapy with the Humax and would recommend it as a "very good buy" ...

Freeview HD

Advantages: Good quality reception, plenty of channels avalible
Disadvantages: Expensive, limited HD channels so far

Having this product for over a year now im still unsure whether it was actually worth the money, living in an area with honestly pretty shocking analogue TV reception we were kind of forced to go digital, which definately was a good idea. The large number and variety of channels means there is always something to watch on TV. The reason we chose to convert to freeview digital was due to the poor reception we got with sky, constantly having trouble ...
...system. I have to admit the freeview box has really worked well, the problems of freezing have been a thing of the past, get a few problems in extremerly bad weather but otherwise excellent reception. THe box itself is a lot smaller than i anticipated and is barely noticable under the system we have set up. The only small problem i have with it is the limted HD reception, admitedly it does look a lot better than normal digital. But it may just be ...

HUMAX FOXSAT HD

Advantages: No contract and lots more channels the Freeview.
Disadvantages: None really but note, it will not receive 'pay for' Sky channels.

This Freesat receiver requires no contract and has nothing to do with Sky whatsoever. However, those with an existing working Sky dish can simply plug in this box and away you go. Functionality is somewhat like Freeview but a dish is required instead of a conventional TV aerial. Has easy to use menu's and installation takes just a few minutes. The remote control has good weight and seems to be robust. Excellent for those wanting to drop Sky, ...
...follow sometime soon . . All usual channels available including Five from the 18th November 2008. Works in non-Freesat mode also and supports DiSEqC 1.0/1.2/USALS so has good non-28.2E service capability with a motorised dish or a multi-LNB system. In Non-Freesat mode this receiver behaves like a FTA receiver. Freesat and non-Freesat channels can't be combined however and are stored seperately depending on mode, must be a condition for Freesat ...

A bit of a disappointment

Advantages: one and a half high definition channnels
Disadvantages: mostly poor standard definition pictures

Excitedly bought this when first released over a year ago for high definition. After all this time we still barely have one and a half HD channels. It seems there have been problems (perhaps with monopolistic Sky?) and there's no more free satellite HD on the horizon? Instead it seems we have to take a backward step and purchase the new HD freeview box about to be released if we want more HD? The other annoying thing about this Foxsat HD box is ...
...and consequently I have to revert to my Sony Freeview recorder's tuner for good pictures in standard definition which is mostly superb. I only use the Foxsat HD box for high definition. This chopping and changing between boxes is a nuisance. The final issue I have is that the BBC HD channel's programmes are not widely listed. They are not shown on the Freeview channel list or the Daily Mail's TV Guide so you have to switch to the Foxsat box just ...
