?? Humble ??

Advantages: An insight into a Gordon Ramsay
Disadvantages: Swearing! Swearing and more swearing

...when I saw the book Humble Pie for sale, I did think that it was something that I would be interested to read. The front cover The words Humble Pie look wrong to me. They are printed over the top of a picture of Gordon Ramsay in a fairly smug pose. Maybe the juxtaposition between the words and pictures are specifically to entice the doubting buyer to read the book in an attempt to make sense of the title. The Back Cover The back cover reads "When ...
...who is desperate to escape and desperate to please..." It is a quote by Gordon Ramsay, about his childhood and how his life has changed and moved on. There is a picture of a young, roughly four year old, Gordon wearing a tie and a cardigan. He is wrinkle free and dare I say it he looks vaguely angelic. The Book This autobiography is divided into chapters, and is dedicated to Gordon's Mum. The foreword starts by Gordon explaining that he has lived ...

A piece of Humble Pie!

Advantages: open and honest autobiography
Disadvantages: none

...- 'from cottage pie to Humble Pie - you deserve a medal.' He also talks warmly of his sisters and his wife Tana. Most interesting is his approach to bringing up his children -three girls and a boy. He definitely does not want them to be spoiled - in fact they only have a pound a week pocket money and any extra has to be earned by doing jobs around the house or garden. I applaud this attitude as it would have been all too easy to lavish everything ...
...does come over as quite humble and never seems to forget where he came from and those who helped him on the way. There is, which probably won't surprise many, a fair proportion of the F word scattered through the book (and I don't mean 'food') I suppose it is quite unnecessary, but anyone who has seen him on TV will know that is how he speaks, so I didn't really expect anything else. He is quite open about the TV work and you can tell that 'Kitchen ...

A Tasty Read

Advantages: Good honest insight to Gordon Ramsey
Disadvantages: Would have liked to read more about his adult life

Gordon Ramsey is one of my favourite celebrity chefs because he really does have a passion for his cooking and reading his autobiography has confirmed my feelings for him. The book comes across as being very frank and honest, something I do admire, and he does actually state that he can't abide liars in his kitchen. I don't really have any reasons to doubt what he says in this book and therefore read it with sympathy, empathy and admiration for what ...
...telling us of his childhood and the continuous moving around they did as a family. This was down to his father's terrible lifestyle of drink, music and women. He got himself into a lot of debt and consequently the family had to move around to dodge the collectors. His father was not a nice man at all and I think Gordon has taken a step back when writing about him. It must be hard to relive those years in the written word and explain about what should ...

Who ate all the pies?

Advantages: Learn the truth about Mr Ramsay
Disadvantages: Not long enough so I want a follow up.

As I am finally getting around to putting my feet up with a nice brew and a good book I decided to read my collection of books that I already had and this had been a christmas present from my other half which I was longing to read but wanted to be able to read as much of it in one go as possible. Published by Harper Collins the book was only released back on the 2nd October 2006, my hardback version contains 304 pages and I managed to get through ...
...bad and I found I was grabbing every opportunity to read this book I hated putting it down. It is easy to read allowing you to pick up where you last left, always a good sign in my opinion. I like reading "official" autobiographies as it gives me an insight as to what that person really likes and feels under what is portrayed in the media and helps me understand that person a little better, after reading that the book was an insight into the real ...

Fascinating insight into a tough profession

Advantages: Very easy to read, interesting content
Disadvantages: Language may put some people off, he writes as he speaks!

I was very excited to receive this in my pile of Birthday gifts, as I am fairly interested by the persona that is Gordon Ramsay. My husband is convinced that I fancy him, but I keep having to explain that it is actually the food that I am dribbling over (the pictures in Gordon Ramsay's Secrets are beautiful!). This biography charts his progress from his unsettled childhood, to his brief spell in professional football, and then his career as a chef. ...
...a particular subject, so even though in the main the whole book is chronological, in some parts he may refer to connected events that occurred years apart. This is easy enough to follow, but sometimes made it a bit unclear to what happened exactly when. There are 3 photographic sections in the book, most of which I think have been well chosen. It is amazing to see how facially different Gordon became at around the age of 12. I started the book by ...

Humble Pie - Gordon Ramsay

Advantages: Not only an insight into an amazing talented man,but a good London resteraunt guide!
Disadvantages: I really can not think of any!

...nearly half price. Humble Pie is a detailed and honest account of Gordon Ramsay's life, past and present, both in and out of the kitchen. Gordon talks about his unsettled childhood "Our family life was built on a series of pipe dreams. The dreams of my father, a wannabe rock 'n' roll star, a man whose dreams turned to dust." Gordon's father was an alcoholic and a violent man, he would fall out with his employers and make the family move up and down ...
...It was not only his employers that he would take his temper out on, Gordon recalls a conversation with his father on the telephone - "Mum's been in hospital for three days," I said. "She asked for it," he grunted.` Gordon's first career choice was not to be a chef but to be a footballer, he came close to playing in the first team at Rangers Football Club, but due to a knee injury could no longer play. Whilst in the youth team for Rangers Gordon ...

The F Word

Advantages: Great insight into the world of Gordon Ramsey
Disadvantages: none really

...However, with Gordon Ramsey's autobiography, Humble Pie, I was finding it difficult to put down. I was bought this present for Christmas, and on a quite, cold, hung-over Boxing Day I decided to start reading it. I am not a very quick reader, it normally takes me about 3 or 4 weeks to finish a book. Humble Pie however, took me about 4 hours to finish. When I started reading this, I could not put it down. The style of writing, again something I normally ...
...across the table from you, telling you it all. Similar styles I have found is in Catcher in the Rye - which I just couldn't read. I have always had respect for Ramsey following his Kitchen Nightmares show where he helps failing businesses turn everything around. Almost like a more masculine food version of Gok Wan. When I had finished reading his book, my respect for the man went through the roof. He gives you a great insight into his life growing ...

Good, not brilliant

Advantages: good insight into the business
Disadvantages: not enough info about him as a chef - i.e. why he is so good

I've just finished this book and certainly enjoyed. It essentially documents Gordon's life for his childhood, through his brief football career and then his swift rise to fame through via various kitchens in England and France. The book gives us a useful insight into the cut throat business of the restrurant trade and Gordon's undoubted passion and hard work ethic comes through in the book. Whilst the book chart's Gordon's developement I don't really ...
...talent. It would have been interesting to understand how he comes to put his recipes together and what distinguishes him from with contempraries in his opinion. There are some amusing tales about his relationships with friends and women in his life, although his vague attempts to convice the reader he is not sexist are not all together sucessful. All in all a good read, but as perhaps one of the top chefs in the world I woulod have liked to know ...

Quick review of Humble Pie - Gordon Ramsay

I bought this book on a whim but from the first moment i picked it up to when I put it down a whole evening had passed, it was quite literally sun up. It was interesting, imformative, intrigueing, emotive and a thoroughly enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to everyone and yes there is swearing and more than a touch of arrogance but anyone reading about Gordon Ramsay would expect that. Go out, buy it; you will not be disappointed. ...

Humble Pie

Advantages: Fantastic read and insight to Gordon Ramsay's life
Disadvantages: Language

An extremely interesting book. Gordon's passion for food is phenominal. It is very encouraging to read about someone who has so much drive and is so passionate about what he does. I think this is why he is one of the best cooks around. The only negative part is the language he uses, but is that is expected. It is like he is telling you the story of his life, without any censoring :) It's a great read, but all the swearing can get just a little too ...

Humble Pie Gordon Ramsay

Advantages: His cute face to wake up beside.
Disadvantages: Bit too cookery based

I was delighted to find on Christmas morning my husband had taken the many subtle hints and bought me this book. I am quite a fan of Gordon and yes I do admit I find there is something quite attractive about the man (although looking at some of his old photographs he has certainly improved with age) Tho book begins by describing his early childhood and how he played for rangers youth team never quite making it into the big time in Scottish football. ...
...a top chef. It is here that the book perhaps becomes less interesting to me. I enjoy a biography that talks about relationships and feelings and whilst Gordon does this you can feel throughout the book that is big passion is food. (which I guess is a good thing if you want to eat in one of his restaurants) A great present but one which I reckon will now find its place on ebay and not on the shelf to read again. Saw its now half price in bookshops ...

More bark less bite

Advantages: Easy read
Disadvantages: It had to end we want more!!

To read this book you would imagine Gordon to be actually standing in the same room. It reads totally in his own voice, by that I mean that you can imagine him narrating it to you. It is a fascinating story of how he got to where he is today and the hardship and emotional trauma that he had to deal with as a young boy in a troubled relationship with his father. He has worked very hard to achieve what he has and I was actually very suprised at how ...
...in the media. It definitely shows that there is more to him than a mouthy, arrogant, chauvenist. He is a hard working, loyal and highly motivated man who has given so much to others to help them achieve their goals and dreams. Its a very easy read, quite light in tone but captivating in content. One of those books that you dread getting to the end of because you want to keep reading! ...

Humble Pie - Gordon Ramsay

Advantages: A new insight to the stubborn rude chef
Disadvantages: Non

Gordon Ramsay Autobiography has to be one of the best books I have read in a while. When you see him on the TV you think I want to tell him where to get off and slap him for being rude, but if you stop and think - then read his book you will understand why the way he is - Rude, Sexy and straight to the point. Gordon talks about his childhood and his cruel father who did nothing but drink and abuse his mother, life in the Ramsay's was poor and the ...
...could never hold down a job. Gordon talks about his sister Diane but talks more about his brother Ronnie and his constant fight on drugs. Originally Gordon was a footballer until an horrific knee injury finished him, which his then how he turned to cookery. This is when you start to realise why Gordon is like he is now because of how he was treated as a trainee chef working all hours for very little money. Gordon has done plenty of travelling including ...

Humble Pie - ish

Advantages: sounds like the author
Disadvantages: a little short

I love his TV shows and so my wife bought me this book. I am not an avid reader so to get me to read anything is an achievement. i read the whole lot in a short time. A very interesting story, similar to that of many families in the UK and around the world. However Gordon became famous and so this makes the book of interest to more people due to celebrity status. The book is simple to read and reflects the manner of the writer. It is written in the ...
