I River is an American company selling portable audio equipment (mp3 player, cd players…). I discovered them by chance a couple of months ago. It was in Switzerland. My girlfriend was looking for a mp3 player, and the seller advised us the brand Iriver, apparently the best on the market. At the time, it was a 256MB mp3 player, with radio and voice recorder included. The little thing looked weird to be honest (like a mini electric shaver) and its price was around £150. After more research for this mp3 player on the net, we came to the conclusion that for this memory storage, this Iriver was the ... more

Advantages Advantages Great value for money, sound quality is amazing!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not aesthetically the best looking

I have always been loyal to Apple. I have an iMac and an iBook. But when they bought out the iPod, it just screamed SCAM! OK, it's cute, but it's also tinny, it's overrated and it's too much of a fashion icon for me. iRiver, on the other hand, is outstanding. My iRiver has a 20gb hard drive. It only cost me £199 and they are even cheaper now, although this model seems to be hard to get hold of. They have upgraded it with the H10, which has a colour screen. The 20gb model is available for £189.99 from 'advancedmp3players.co.uk', which is an excellent site for all things MP3 related! They also ... more

Advantages Advantages Loads of features, great backlit remote

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cluttered design and menu system, no on-the-go playlists

Every player that tried to challenge the iPod usually falls face down at the first hurdle – design. Some users, especially ones that don’t care that much about advanced features would judge an mp3 player on two criteria – design and sometimes battery life. That is why iPod is so successful, because in spite of being one of the least technologically advanced players on the market its design is simple yet stylish and its ease of use is top notch. Design is one of HP-120’s biggest letdowns. It looks too crowded with buttons and the black and silver case looks a bit geeky. It reminded me a little ... more

Advantages Advantages Ease of use, large drive capacity, looks cool

Disadvantages Disadvantages can't think of any

Have tested loads of MP3 players in this range and I couldn't find one with the best features for the price range. It is so easy to use and the sound quality is brilliant via earphones and also when connected to speakers. You can create playlists using winamp which is great. The database feature to search by genre etc is fab. It is so easy to click up and search for your music. Also the added bonus is the FM Radio player which is ACE. It takes 2hrs in total to recharge the battery and battery life is around 16 hours too. It's so simple and quick to download music, It takes my PC around 7 ... more

Advantages Advantages Looks, design, ease of use, features

    Disadvantages Disadvantages headphones

I really wanted an MP3 player ever since the iPod became popular, and for a long time was saving up for an iPod itself before seeing the iRiver 120. It seemed to match the iPod in so many areas and also had a great battery life which I have found to be true to its word. The size of the hard drive is very good at 20 GB, and in fact although I have had it for six months I still haven't found the time to use up even 4GB of this space. I was also very impressed with the ease of use of the iRiver navigation buttons and it took me no longer than a good look at the manual and a couple of minutes and ... more

This has to be one of the best things I've bought in a long time. It comes with all the accessories like, very well fitted cover, leather look wallet, external mic, all connecting cables for audio inputs. You can connect this to a Hi Fi and record in MP3 in all different quality settings, I usually stick to 160kbps whichis near enough CD quality recording. Special features include two optical inputs so I can connect straight into a CD player. and move it onto an MD recorder optically aswell! It is extremely simple to use, and at first I was surprised at the amount of facilities it did have ... more

My iRiver has a 20gb hard drive. It only cost me £199 and they are even cheaper now, although this model seems to be hard to get hold of. The hp-120 has more features than you know what to do with. It comes with an internal and external mic. This means that you can not only record as you would with a dictaphone, for as long as you desire, but you can also record live with excellent sound quality! I have found this incredibly useful in lectures or to dictate notes, but you can record music this way if you want. The iRiver comes with a built in FM radio, and although it occasionally goes fuzzy ... more

Advantages Advantages Battery life, easy to use

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I originally looked at this as an alternative to an Ipod Mini, when I didn't want to wait the ridiculous delivery time for the Ipod Mini. Looking into it further, it looked like a much better choice than the Ipod anyway. On buying it, it took me about an hour to get it all sorted out and put all my music on it. It will hold up to 600 hours of playback, and the battery life is 16 hours, twice that of the Ipod. The folder and file navigation is very simple and easy to use, it is much like the way of organising files and folders on a computer. The radio is also a good feature, and easy to use ... more

Advantages Advantages can use many formats of music, quality of sound, many good features

Disadvantages Disadvantages quite big, navigation hard to use at first, does not look very stylish

i baught an iriver for alot of money and was not distatisfied with the product. despite this i would not choose to buy the h120 again. reasons for this: firstly in the mp3 player market many new stylish looking brands are being sold, the h120 is big for a 20gb mp3 player, its dull grey colours make it less attractive then the "clean" looking white and silver ipod. When i first got the h120 i found the navigation a bit hard to use and it does take a long time to scroll through the artists, songs e.t.c but.... despite these couple of problems it has many good points: most formats of music are ... more
