Advantages: Something to watch when home alone on a Saturday night Disadvantages: Some of the people on the show
Love it or hate it, I think that most people have watched “Stars in their eyes” at some time. But just in case you have never seen it here is what happens.
Ordinary people, who have been convinced they can sing by their friends and relatives, attend auditions for the show. Five winners go on the one-hour programmes screened on Saturday nights, got up as well-known singers and perform one of their hits. Each week one contestant is voted ... ...where an overall winner is picked.
The host of this programme is the sycophantic Matthew Kelly. I don’t mean to run him down, his kindness to some of these poor, deluded souls knows no limits. Matthew has a brief chat to the contestant and a short video of them going about their daily lives is televised. During this time he seems very adept at putting the sometimes very nervous people at their ease. We then hear them utter those famous “Tonight ...

Advantages: Bad enough to be good Disadvantages: Bad enough to be terrible
Watching Stars In Their Eyes is the televisual equivalent of being asked to rub the delightful feet of one of Marge's sisters in the Simpsons, quite simply the sort of gut wrenchingly awful experience which sends an unpleasant shiver down the spine of every right thinking individual.
There is truly nothing more chilling than hearing that godawful catchphrase "Tonight Matthew I'm going to be ..." and to hear, hear, hear it is to hate, hate, hate ... ...back in the days of the King of Prime Time Pap, Leslie Crowther, but the advent of the cloyingly nice Matthew Kelly has, if anything, brought it to a whole new depth. I bet there are a very small number of you who remember when Crowther was king and Matty Lad has been at the helm for several years now. The problem is that Matthew is so wholesome and pleasant and out and out cosy that there is just no redeeming feature ... AT ALL.
Okay, I'll come ...

Advantages: appeals to all ages Disadvantages: you might not have heard of all the acts
'Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be...' Those immortal words have become the staple of Saturday night TV along with Cilla Black, the National Lottery and duff films. After over 10 years, it is still going strong, and will be back for another series in 2002. It was originally hosted by Leslie Crowther, although Matthew Kelly (perhaps best known for 'You Bet' and 'Game For A Laugh' previously) took over soon afterwards following Crowther's premature ... ...5 ordinary members of the public dress up as a singer of their choice, and belt out one of their classics. Pretty much every singer you can think of has been done at some point (although I'm still waiting for a plucky contender to sing 'Anyone Can Fall In Love' dressed up to the nines as Anita Dobson, but here's to hoping...). The standard is usually very high, and it just goes to show that there really are good singers out there. However, you can't ...

Advantages: Great show, different format to other shows of its kind, great presenting. Disadvantages: Annoying time fillers, too much make up, wouldnt survive now.
...Saturday nights on ITV1 (just ITV back then). The concept of the show is that members of the public would write in to say who they looked and sounded like when singing and then some of them would be selected to go on to the show and then perform in front of the live audience and for the members of the public at home. Before the performance there would be an introduction to the person and you would be told their name, where they came from & what they ... ...around their homes too and I never thought that this had any purpose to the show other than as a time filler. Once the act had their make-up done and were ready they emerged through some smoke and then out on to the stage to do their performance. I remember the first questions to be asked & answered in our house were do they look like the person they think they sound like & do they sound like them? The make-up team normally did a very good job but ...

Advantages: a good laugh, entertaining Disadvantages: sat for a long time, boring in parts
Last night my husband and I got invited from my workmate to see "Stars in their Eyes" being filmed.
She worked for Granada before they merged with Radio Rentals and are now called Boxclever, she still is on the mailing list for free tickets to Granada Studios.
We joined the long queue at 6.20pm and by 6.30, they let the 200 ish people in.
You entered through the gates and went past the Rovers return, into the studio.
We passed a little room which ... ...at the end, waiting to see who was the winner.
You could sit where you wanted, everybody gasped in amazement on how small the stage was.
In fact the audience area was very small.
They must have super imposed the audience to make it look as though there was more of us.
The stage though was very effective, it had all different lights around it, they changed into all different colours and sequences.
The curtains around the side of the building ...

Hosted by Matthew Kelly (who can be a tad irritating), Stars in Their Eyes is a show where people dress up and perform as their favourite artists. Lasting one hour and usually screened on a Saturday or Sunday night it is very entertaining.
Each week 5 contestants take part in the show, competing for a place in the grand final, no great prizes on offer, just stardom! We receive a look at each contestant in their day to day life before a brief interview ... ...the chance to try and guess who the contestant is going to be when they step through those famous sliding doors. The contestant then disappears through the doors and reappears 5 seconds later fully transformed and sometimes this can be quite a transformation!
Then we have the performance….usually these are very good and sometimes better than the stars themselves! Often the stars the contestants choose to be are quite obscure and people I have ...

Advantages: some decent impersonations Disadvantages: brain numbingly dull
With those immortal words that fill me with revulsion; ‘Tonight Matthew, I m going to be……’ , would be pop stars walk through the doors into an apparently burning room, and re emerge as what they are; pathetic wannabes in a stupid wig. I don’t know where they dig up these people, they look normal enough and then suddenly become a hideous clone of the star that they try to impersonate…badly. The last episode I saw ... ...six storey building, and grinned as he said that it was his dream to perform on ‘Stars in their Eyes’. What kind of person dreams of doing that? In the many years that the show has been on, the only contestant to come near to a decent impersonation was the Freddie Mercury guy. As for most of the other contestants, the only decent impression they can do is of a man with no talent.
What kind of country is it that encourages the public ...

Advantages: great entertainment Disadvantages: not interesting when you don't know the singer
Stars in Their Eyes is a great entertainment show. A great replacement for Casualty now it's finished!
The idea of this show is a normal everyday person (not me then - I'm mad) goes on the show and pretends to be a famous singer. They get made up to look like the singer and get dressed up in the same clothes that singer would wear.
It's great fun guessing who the person is going to be then comparing them to the person. On the odd occasion you get ... ...interesting! That's the time to go and make the coffee.
A couple of years ago Freddie Mercury won and he was brilliant. He sounded exactly like the real thing and I expect he's making a lot of money now using that voice!
Everyone on the show has got to sing live and (most of them) have great voices, makes you wonder why they don't get a job singing really. I guess there can't be a great call for singers?
Matthew Kelly does a great job hosting ...

Advantages: Some good singing, Matthew Kelly Disadvantages: none
'Stars in Their Eyes' is an entertaining show for the family to watch, and sometimes, have a giggle at!
Presented by Matthew Kelly, people get the chance to show their singing skills by singing, and sometimes looking like, a famous singer. Each show consists of 5 (?) people from all walks of life being interviewed by Matthew, and saying a little big about the person they are going to be. A short profile is given on the person (the real person who ... ...person states who they are going to be, and head for the famous brightly lit double-doors, waving and forcing a smile to the cheering audience as they make their exit. A puff of smoke blocks out the door, and they re-appear as the famous person. The look of them can sometimes be quite uncanny! They could actually be that person!
So, now to the crunch - the singing. Can they sing? Well, obviously yes, if not they wouldn't be on the show! But, do ...

Stars in their Eyes in my view is an excellent programme allowing people to come on and sing like the stars they have chosen, presented my Matthew Kelly who I think is really good. Stars in the Eyes is watched by millions, each year as the series comes to a close, more and more people tune it, with a record number of people ringing to vote for who they should win. I like this show and wish it was on more often. My favourite word's are 'Tonight Matthew ... ...good show with a good presenter. A good concept by whomever thought of the idea. I like it when they change from themselves into the people they are going to be, it is really good the way the make up staff present them. When the last series of Stars in The Eyes came on, it was the same time as another Talent show, but I think this show is better, allowing people to imitate a star and have the chance of going into the grand final. For the winner of ...

Advantages: Good clean entertainment Disadvantages: A bit same
I don't get to see this program every time it's on, but when I do get to watch it I always enjoy it.
I am often fascinated at how much like their chosen starts, the guests actually are. For example, this years final winner 'Freddie Mercury'. What a talented guy the guy who 'was' Freddie. Bravo. Very well performed. He deserved to win.
Many people think of this program as simply glorified karaoke, whihc of course it isn't. The contestants who appear ... ...become their stars. One thing that ghas always strucj me about this show is that unlike the old talent contest type shows *every contestant* has a good measure of natural talent.
All in Ll a good Saturday night entertainment show, suitable for all the family. Entertaining with great presenting by Mathey Kelly. ...
