I was never sure how the concept which is Ikea would cotton on in France. The French are traditionalists, love their old furniture, passed down from generation to generation, and I thought that Ikea would have difficulty breaking down the defences and establishing a market in rural parts of France. The Ikea that I visited was in Nantes, and approaching it, it was not surprising that there was a lot of traffic. This is a major town, although Ikea had the sense to have their store easily accessible from the ring road, so that people didn't easily get lost in the centre of the town trying to find ... more

Buy quality IKEA, Shop till you Drop! I am a regular visitor and I regularly purchase many items from IKEA. A day out with a difference and it can be stressful if you allow it to be. The First stress of the day is when you arrive at the Ikea store, parking your car is fine during week days, but at weekends the only park you will get is the Heli - pad, just wishful thinking. Even so; it still remains exciting, because we are about to enter the world of flat pack. Many of us do not like flat pack furniture and in some ways there is a stigma attached to buying and assembling our own furniture. If ... more

Advantages Advantages Low prices, suprisingly good quality and the actual experience!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be tricky to park, and bad luck if its out of stock!

I would say I'm a regular IKEA-ER. Yes I admit it, guilty as charged. I'm the lady who has the same £25 carpet and same flat-packed shelves, units, beds and candles as around 25 million of the British population, but I do mean it when I say what I have bought from IKEA does feel and look like something truly original. Ikea does have a certain appeal, it does have something that sets it apart from the British high street or your MFI superstores. There's something high-fashion but also classic about it. Ok, maybe that sounds a tad weird but to put it another way If myself, my 6 year old step ... more

Advantages Advantages Vast range, good prices, sturdy furniture

Disadvantages Disadvantages Customer services a bit 'iffy'

I first encountered the large Swedish furniture retailer when I was living in Germany 16 years ago. I went there because I needed to buy some stuff for my flat (1 bedroom, living room with a coal fire - only source of heat in the whole flat, small kitchen with a washbasin and boiler and a toilet - and all for only £23 per week!). I thought it was a nice shop, but was not aware of the phenomenon it was to become. In 1991 I went with my mother to my first British IKEA store, in Croydon. It was fun and I remember driving back to Kent with my arms holding the bookcase that was sticking out of the ... more

That's how you're supposed to pronounce the name of this store - or so they tell me. And it seems pretty appropriate, if you think about it. Eye - I would say that the first thing that you notice about IKEA stores is how pleasant they are on the eye. The layout is done in such a way that you move from furnished room to furnished room, with sections along the way that show the range of products for each room in your home. In this way, you not only can see what is available, but also get an idea of how it can look in your own home. I truly appreciate this type of layout. One of the best things ... more

Wouldn't it be a boring world if we all liked the same things? It is the choices that we make and the things that we find attractive that make us all different and that is definitely a good thing. Take furniture for example. There are so many different designs to choose from, so many styles, so many different materials. Some people find themselves drawn to very ornate pieces. Large, lavish pieces of wood with decorative corners and fancy edging are some peoples idea of style and elegance. This sort of furniture is not for me though. I like plain and simple. I like crisp clean edges. I like ... more

Britain seems to have a love, hate relationship with Ikea; you either can’t get enough or wouldn’t darken their doors if you got paid for it I fall into the former category although that doesn’t mean to say they are perfect by any means. The stores are dotted around the country at various out of town retail parks. The ones I have visited are in Croydon (not been to for several years) and Lakeside Thurrock which we make the pilgrimage to a few times a year (can’t go too often or my wife would bankrupt us). So it is Lakeside that I shall base this review on. THE STORE Ikea is a Swedish company ... more

I have to confess a love/hate relationship with Ikea, the Swedish furnishings/home improvement chain on a mission to conquer the world using only MDF. Even if you have spent the last decade on the planet IRSTA (see catalogue for details) you cannot fail to have noticed the strange springing-up of a number of vast blue and yellow warehouse stores at out-of-town retail parks. If you own or rent your own place, it is barely conceivable that you will not, at some point, have undertaken the IKEA experience, and hopefully lived to tell the tale… A recent spate of improvementitis took me back ... more

Ikea is not so much a shopping outlet – for many people it is a way of life – and the Swedish proprietors love it that way. Going to Ikea is not about buying one or two items – it’s about embracing a lifestyle and a set of values. Having previously lived near a brand new Ikea centre, I must confess I was suitably intrigued by all the hype, and it wasn’t that long before I found myself wandering through the showrooms inspecting the wares. Nonetheless, a couple of years on, I can safely say that I do not like Ikea. It may be something to do with the mind-numbing ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some crap on sale

Most of you intelligent readers will have already heard of Ikea, whether you have shopped there or not. I'm not really a shopping kind of guy but every so often we just jump in the car a take a little leisurely stroll around our nearest Ikea. It's only a 20 minute drive away and is a reasonably pleasurable experience usually. One piece of advice though don't go during a bank holiday, it's mobbed, and ends up a complete nightmare trying to move and get round the store. Ikea stores are readily identifiable due to the rather large and colourful signage. This large sign is a blue rectangle with a ... more
