Advantages Advantages Cheap, reasonable performance and highly overclockable

Disadvantages Disadvantages intel roll out new ones so fast, the older ones are obsolete in a week!

I've had the personal pleasure of working with 3 celerons (2 different models) since venturing into the world of PC's. A slot 1 333mhz was my first encounter and the first processor I ever overclocked. When I decided the time was growing near for an upgrade, I decided to dabble in the mysterious world of overclocking before binning the 333. "333's just dont overclock, you're wasting your time!", that's what people told me. I popped mine onto an ABit BE6-II mobo and started playing with the settings, 475mhz and stable with only a single additional fan added to keep it cool - I was grinning like ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap processor

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow, small cache,

I have mixed experiences with these processors, In comparison to AMD's chips, Im afraid Celeron processors do not compare. My AMD K6-2/450 which worked without fault, was sold and replaced with a Celeron 533Mhz which at the time was of similar cost. Celeron processors were at the time rated quite highly however in comparison to AMD's 450, Graphical benchmarks, Gameplay, High Quality Video files, processor benchmarks all showed a great deal of a decrease in performance with the celeron. The Celeron runs on a 66mhz bus speed which greatly reduces performance in comparison to processors running ... more

    Advantages Advantages Proven track record.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages A little dated.

The Celeron does not have the brand name punch that the Pentium does, but, none the less, it a solid and reliable chip. It doesn’t have any problems with floating point division either! This chip is getting a little dated now and I wouldn’t advice anyone to buy a brand new machine that has one, or even two, of these chips. If, however, you are looking at a second hand personal computer or you are looking at buying a number of computers suitable for, say, all the secretaries in the office then the Celeron could be just the chip you need. This is a reliable little device and will bring with it ... more

    Advantages Advantages good overclocker

Disadvantages Disadvantages not as good as duron

The Celeron has been around for a while now and, due to the fact that it is a cut-down version of the Pentium 3 that runs at a slower bus speed (66MHz for the Celeron compared to 100 MHz for the P3), with a little TLC and a lot of cooling, it can often be made to run at speeds far greater than the advertised values. In this respect, it is not as good as AMD's Duron processor (see my review of that for details), but for owners of BX boards, this can be a cheap upgrade (see your motherboard manufacturer's website for details of whether it will run Celerons), as all that is required is the CPU ... more

Advantages Advantages Pretty fast, PIII core

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not cheap in budget terms

The bosses at Intel have finally decided that they cant waste any processors any more. Its takes too much money and time in the industry to manufacture too many chips because they dont have many fabrication plants to do the job. Basically they had to find a way to make lots of different chips very quickly. Well here's the clever part. The Celeron II (not official name) is simply a PIII, well I say simply a PIII but that's what they are. Only difference is they are faulty PIII's. Not faulty as in they don't work, but faulty as in half of the 256k cache doesn't work. All Intel have done to these ... more

Advantages Advantages Celeron 566 o'cd to 850 is straightforward.

Disadvantages Disadvantages To take AMD into consideration, you must do some research.

Tom's Hardware published a new comparison today of the Duron and Celeron, converting MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 and decoding MPEG-4. http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/00q3/000925/mpeg4-02.html It appears that an overclocked Athlon outperforms the Pentium III and the o'cd Celeron. But $ for $, £ for £, you need to total up the entire system cost to make such a decision. Especially in the U.K., the Athlon parts could wind up being more expensive than the Celeron. Athlon 700, overclocking fan/Goldenfingers, K7V mobo, DDR RAM (when??) Celeron 566, Golden Orb or Golden Win fan to o'c, PC100 RAM and mobo ... more

Advantages Advantages System runs at 133Mhz

Disadvantages Disadvantages have not found any yet (3 months)

I purchased an Intel Celeron 533. The reasons for my choice are many, but basically the Slot 1 processor seems to be getting outdated by Socket 370, the fans on a Slot 1 seem to have aproblem in that out of 10 machines purchased in the office that I work in all had to be replaced within 9 months, and the others that have been sent in replacement some have already started to get noisy. I would also add, that there seems to be a much better performance from a complete 133 chipset system than a 100 system. Overall having purchased and extremely good quality motherboard I am now in a position ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheaer than other processor of the same speed and can be over clocked to a slightly faster speed

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cheap (depending on whether you find cheap an advantage or disadvantage), cnat cope with what its counter parts can!

Theres not much i can really say about an intel celeron, except do not buy one. Thy are cheap garbage - i mean ok if you cant afford great hardware for your pc then thi maybe an option, or if you only use your pc for word processing, etc, aside from that its not very good for anything. My intel celeron 333MHz with MMX has caused me nothing but trouble. One fact of them is that many dont run at the speed they are stated. In tests they have the ability to but mine does not run at the speed! They can be over clocked if you have the know how but i am seriously agaisnt it. When comparing mine to my ... more

Advantages Advantages decent gaming chip, good allround performer

Disadvantages Disadvantages way too expensive compared to the opposition, older technology

There was once a time when the Celeron served a very good purpose. This is because it was the only chip which served the purpose of bridging the gap between the Cyrix MII/AMD K6-2 at the low end and the Athlon/PIII at the highend. However this is no longer the case as AMD have released the Duron to compete with the Celeron. Now for those who dont know, the Duron is released as a competitor for Intels Celeron and VIA's Cyrix III. This is all good and proper until we look at the prices. Based on benchmarks the Duron is a little quicker than the Celeron which is fine as the Celeron is a year or ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap, fast

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as commercial as PIII and AMD Athlon

I was stuck for buying my first PC so my visit to PC World introduced me to the world of the Intel Celeron. I'm not very much into the "Commercial" side of computing, these being the AMD's and the Intels I, II's and III's. I wanted something different. The Celerons performance is classed to be very similar to a Pentium II and an AMD K6/2, which in any standard is good. It is highly affordable and is available with clock speeds of up to 433MHz. The performance of the chip itself is quite remarkable as it was origianlly made as an alternative to the other chips available in the market. It is ... more
