Advantages Advantages Compatibility - Speed - & Speed!

Disadvantages Disadvantages price (CPUs are NOT Cheap!)

Recently I gave into the “pressure” and purchased a new Intel Pentium III processor. For over a year my main system was running on a P2-350, and truthfully I thought that the speed was incredibly fast and that I did not need an upgrade. However, when I built a second computer last week I decided to go with a P3 even though I highly considered saving the money and buying another P2. I am very glad that I decided to go with the P3 550. This processor wasn’t excessively expensive since it has been out for a while now (6 Months?), so I did not feel like I was throwing away my money. Let me tell ... more

    Advantages Advantages Widely available, reliable

Disadvantages Disadvantages High price, relativly low performance

The pentium 3 is available at speeds ranging from 450MHZ to 1GHZ ( 1000MHZ ) and the cache ( processor memory ) is typically 256Kb. The processor enhancments are the ever popular MMX. The main thing that attracts people to the Pentium 3 is publicity it is given by the people at Intel. Most shop bought computers will contain a pentium processor of some sort. There is no dispute over the power increase over previous pentium models and over those of a lower clock speed. How does the pentium 3 hold its own against its main competitor the AMD processors. The honest answer is not too well. Firstly ... more

In order to increase the performance of your intel based computer, it is not always necessary to purchase a shiny new CPU. By twiddling and tweaking, it is possible to increase the operating speed of the CPU (and other components) with stability so that the system performance is enhanced. The speed of a chip can be determined by the following equation Front Side Bus x Multiplier = Internal Chip Speed Thus a Celeron 533a is calculated as follows 66Mhz x 8.0 = 533Mhz All Pentium 3's and Celerons are multiplier locked, that is the multiplier cannot be altered to overclock in that way. There is ... more

Advantages Advantages Fast Chip, newest instruction set

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far too priceycompared to AMD

The Intel PIII is one of the two most powerfull processors on the market along with the AMD Athlon. The real problem I have with the Intel offereing is there price. I dont believe that the PIII is better than the Athlon, I believe its close but no where near as the price difference suggests. The Pentium III was the first Intel chip to have SSE(Streaming SIMD* Extensions) * Single Edge Contact Cartridge Basically this was MMX 2, it does all the jobs that MMX was supposed to do and never really made a great job of. SSE contains 70 new instructions for the processor. The PIII has been marketed to ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great little chip

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

When Pentium took over the market with their new chip nearly 10 years ago now, it shocked the PC world into thinking we had an unendless means to our machines. Well, apart from an increase in Processor speed, has the P3 got any improvements over the P2 or is it significantly worse than the P4? Well, in a word. No on all counts. The P3 is significantly smaller in size compared to the P2. In fact, to look at, it looks just like the old P1 socket 7 size chip. I thought I had the wrong machine when I opened up my PC to see this old design on my motherboard. Yet, It is the way technology is going ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Too expensive

Long ago....and i mean long ago, Intel ws well known for their brilliant processors, ruling over all the over makes like AMD, Cyrix who were the leading competitors to the brilliance of Intel. It must have been prolonged period at the No. 1 seat for processors that Intel decided they will slack off a bit, and this is when AMD released their Athlon processor. Everybody's expectations were that the AMD's new offering was going to be rubbish and another failed attempt to beat Intel. But the Athlon was to everyone's surprise actually beat the Intel line of processors andfrom then on Intel tried to ... more

The Pentium III 550E has to be the best choice for a value for money processor at the moment - if you can get one ! I bought a 550E in April of this year to use on my new supermicro PIIISCD motherboard and could not believe how easy it was to overclock it !! The PIIISCA has a jumper to override the front side bus setting contained on the processor. Setting the jumper to 133 rather than the default fsb I rebooted & then, to my suprise, even with the standard fan on the processor, my PC ran happily at 733! After a small tweak (adding another fan to keep the loaded temperature below 40 degrees) ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages outclassed by cheaper athlon

Intel amazes me - years after everyone ridiculed the name "pentium" they are still at it with their latest revision, the PIII. Like all intel chips, it is completely compatible with all existin dos, win, linux etc, so all your old programs will still run. HOWEVER, this is likely to be the last chip that is this completely backwards compatible. THe next chip will have a 64bit layout, and it is likely that 32-bit [ie pentium] will only be emulated - which means slowdown. However, back to the chip. All PIII have either a 100mhz bus or a 133mhz bus. Those which have the ending xxxE [ie 667E] have ... more

The Pentium III still bears the vestige of a name that has been with us for a computing eternity, and there is no sign of a let us, with the P IV around the corener according to PC Plus. Whilst Processor speeds have gone through the roof, Intel's customer commitmetn has become sluggish. The Athlon is a far superior chip and to boot doesn't spy on your operations. Whilst the P III claims to be web enhanced the 23 new operation since the P II series don't seem to be that great an advancement. The Celeron though represents a good budget solution, but teh P III is overpriced. ... more

Unlike the jump from Pentium to Pentium II, which could justifiably be described as a revolutionary step, Intel's move from Pentium II to Pentium III is evolutionary. The new chip, which will initially be available in 450MHz and 500MHz clock speeds, uses the same 100MHz system bus, and Intel's preferred 440BX motherboard chipset, as its predecessor. The main differences are optimisations. In particular, the new chip has 70 extra instructions which have been designed to accelerate the performance of multimedia and Web-based operations such as audio/video streaming. In other words, the Pentium ... more
