...Konami's latest version of their International Superstar Soccer (ISS) series has been out since the beginning of May on Nintendo's gamecube and here's my op...
The game comes on one mini-DVD (not a cd as everyone keeps saying), and dependent on where you buy it, costs between £35 - £45 (play.com, amazon.com and gameswire.com all seem to be quite competitive). Mine actually came as a deal from Toys r us.
So up starts the intro, quite average really ... ...track that was used on Wipeout (the game, not the crappy Paul Daniels TV show!.) Then, up pop the options, all nicely presented, where there is:
a cup competition,
a league competition,
VS option
training option
and other "Options" (not too important)
Up to 4 players can take part, which is good for a laugh, although a major tournament is possible with many more players (tho not at the same time!)
Team & Stadium select are the next options. ...

Advantages: Solid football game Disadvantages: Slow, sometimes unexciting
...Now I’m going to rate International Superstar Soccer 2 (ISS for short), its main competitor. Sounds pointless, right? What’s the point of rating another, significantly older football game when I’ve already given Fifa full marks? Well, although they’re both football games, they have very different styles of play and basic gameplay. It’s like Liverpool and Real Madrid; both are football clubs but they are both very different.
Story
Since this was ... ...Football pitch playing for an International country is also great fun and adds more length to the game. In fact, you’ll probably find this option the most entertaining, even though there isn’t much to customize a player with. The Training and Multiplayer modes, mentioned earlier, are also well designed. You can also unlock special teams that include the best players from each continent, although I think Konami got it horribly wrong there.

Advantages: Fun 2 player footy action Disadvantages: Dodgy AI and controls
Firstly, let me begin by saying how much I hate football games that have 'Soccer' in the title. Thoroughly irritating. Soccer is a game played only in the US and features such things as: 'a net-shot opportunity'; 'the shot-zone'; 'sudden death match-up'; 'net-shake legends'. All these taken from American Commentary on the World Cup.
Anyway, apart from the nauseating title, here we have a sequel to the rather marvellous ISS64 (on the N64, of course) ... ...I was very excited when I saw ISS2 for sale and immediately purchased a copy based on the ruptation of it's predecessor. As a football game compared to the N64 version, it's better. But considering the Cube is more than twice as powerful, I expected to see more than just improved graphics.
There are three levels of game play:
Beginner, Real and Real Hard.
For the average player, these would be better labeled as:
Ridiculously Easy, Difficult and ...

Advantages: More simulation than arcade Disadvantages: Controls are a little creaky
...as you're favorite domestic team. International means just that. If you're English you can be England, German then Germany, an Arsenal supporter then France. Is a bit sloppy leaving out domestic teams. Most people will buy the game so the can be the team they watch each Saturday in the terraces. They'll be a bit disappointed.
Perhaps I'm being harsh. The game is capivating enough. It is frustrating but somehow you forgive it. Beating Germany/Argentina/Brazil ... ...is good and the graphics on the whole are fine and dandy. Its just got such obvious flaws. I have played other games on the mighty 'Cube and so much time and attention has gone into them that they just make this look a little half-baked. Rent it first (I did) and buy if you like it. Personally, I'm waiting for something a little better. This Is Football would be nice or a decent FIFA. I guess I'll just have to keep on playing Super Monkey Ball and ...

...excited at the prospect of International Superstar Soccer 2 (I.S.S 2 for short). So the day I got a Gamecube would also be the day I got I.S.S 2.
So what’s new about I.S.S 2? Nothing much has changed at all apart from proper player names. I.S.S 2 is generally an updated and much better version than its predecessors.

Advantages: Best Footie Game on Cube Disadvantages: Simplified controls
International super star soccer is the latest game from Konami. It is one of only three football titles on the gamecube at the moment, at it happens to be the best, no suprises there. It is yet another top class game. The presentation is on a hole very well done, with easy to understand menu's and easy access to the options. You can edit all the teams, leagues and players, you can even create your own players. The graphics are very clean and crisp, ... ...and have real names (a first for any ISS game) however the real names are limited to the more well known teams such as england and france.
The commentary is also excellent it has to be the best i have heard yet. As is the enviromental sound effects such as the crowds roars.
The only problems i have found with the game are that the players have large turning circles this can be annoying, but doesn't ruin the game. Also it can take a while to get ...
