Advantages Advantages Looks good and is easy to set up.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rock-bottom drive, but not quite a rock-bottom price.

It’s another product from Iomega that has nothing to do with the Zip drive or Zip disks, yet are labelled with the Zip name by Iomega, who hope that they can trade off their reputation and sell a few units to people who’ve heard that the Zip drive is quite good, but want a CD-RW drive. You should understand, though, that this is pretty much just a regular CD-RW drive. The fact that it’s from Iomega means that it looks absolutely great (check out the pictures on their web site), but how important is that in a drive like this? While I can see the point of stylish looks in many computer products ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not top spec, can't do much else while it burns

The Iomega Zip CD 650 may not win any prizes for having a short and catchy name, but it is certainly competent enough where it matters, in CD writing, strangely enough. If you’re looking for a review blinding you with technical information on the device, I’m not the man to look for because I’m just not the nerdy type. This review is firmly laid out in layman’s terms. Most PCs come with CD writers as a standard accessory these days anyway, so the Zip 650 is an interesting product because Iomega have found a target market quite intelligently. I presume that a lot of the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Reliable, good value

Disadvantages Disadvantages There are cheaper models availble

I've had my 4x Iomega ZipCD650 for 6 months now, and I've generally been pleased with it. The build quality seems excellent, probably exceeding some budget models. However, the big question with any CD Writer is "how many CDs will it waste?". My answer with my Iomega has been "it depends". It seems that to get the best performance you should try different CD Writing software as depending on your CD Writer, computer, and operating system performance varies greatly. I found Adaptec Easy CD 3.5 (supplied) to be o.k. but a bit dodgy, Adaptec 4 Deluxe to be significantly better, and Nero to be the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Looks nice

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very unsatisfactory for the purpose

I got an Iomega Zip 650 as a bundle along with a new i-Mac DV early this year, and have had immense difficulty getting it do do what it's supposed to do - i.e. burn CDs correctly. The main problem is the fail rate; currently running at 90% and rising! I have tried all sorts of things - different makes of CD, different burn rates, and the safest sems to be when I use Phillips (not the cheapest)and a burn rate of 1x or 2x. I am quite disappointed (understatement) at the lack of success I have had with the machine, and am about to take it back to the purchasing outlet to see if it's just me, or ... more

    Advantages Advantages Really good looking

Disadvantages Disadvantages Technical help assumes a level of knowledge I don't have

I must admit, my main reason for buying this particular cd writer was because it looks gorgeous! I wanted an external drive because my computer is new, and I didn't fancy messing around with its innards. Cheap external drives are not very common, and when it came to a choice between a big grey box and a sleek purple one, my decision was made! The drive was very easy to set up, though I had a few problems at first (2 out of 3 cds became coasters)! Iomega have a very useful service on their website where you can instant message their technical help department. I did this after the 3rd cd, and ... more

Advantages Advantages Looks good to the untrained eye

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very rarely last more than 3 months and is quicly replaced by new product

Well i was an Iomega fan, but disaster has struck for the second time. The first time I bought a zip drive from iomega it was the parrallel port zip100, which was not working when i got it. When i sent it back it was replaced with a USB connecting zip100 as the parrallel was no longer made. Great if you've got a USB port on your PC!! However, I bought a new PC (not for the drive I might add) and wanted a cd writer. I again turned to Iomega for their stylish and well priced (£145) external 4x4x6 writer. In a cool purple colour, it looks the business. It connects like a dream - but hates nearly ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap mass storage

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Better alternatives

After the first two packages went missing in transit I guess I felt as bit unlucky. Sourced from another vendor and package arrived next day. Opened up the box and plugged it in, in goes the installation CD and I was in for a bad surprise. The Zip 650 USB is not NT compatible. At this time my first vendor did not state this, and Iomega also did not make it clear. I purchased this simply to transfer files from my speedy connection at work to my PC at home. So, I've had to give up and use it at home only. I've researched the Zip650 and can honestly tell you I've seen mixed reviews. I myself have ... more

The Zip CD is just what you need if you need to store huge amounts of info but don’t want to use the space on your computers hard drive another plus is that the information you have stored on disc can be seen on another computer, just think of the possibilities. One of the best things about the Zip CD is that in my opinion anyone could install it into their computer without any problems arising cause the Zip CD comes with adequate installation instructions, in the form of an instruction manual and CD, hence one of the reasons for not buying the dearer USB Zip CD drive. The Zip CD comes with 3 ... more

This internal IDE cd writer actually does write at eight speed although calimed on the box to do 10 speed. It comes bundled with the easy cd creator software and also a cd labelling kit is thrown in to the order. This drive has no bad points at all and is a very fast writer with a normal cdr taking just under 7 minutes each, not bad going in todays market. I like this product and would definately suggest it to friends, especially at just under £160 for the complete package! Definately worth a look! ... more
