Advantages Advantages I can see a benefit for businesses

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Is it fair?

So, national minimum wage is increasing by 1.8% from October 2012, but not for everyone, much to the dismay of union leaders. Is it fair that minimum wage hasn’t been increased for 16-20 year olds? I'm on the fence with this one. Minimum wage has always been a bone of contention with those that are on it, and a matter of little interest to those that aren't, who are earning above it. From a statement by Vince Cable, it doesn’t sound like there is a very strong reasoning behind the freeze on minimum wage: "In these tough times freezing the youth rates has been a very hard decision - but raising ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty of young willing workers

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Massive immigration

There’s a great scene in the West Wing where the opposing Republicans to President Bartlett’s ruling Democratic Party want to introduce compulsory military service for under 18s not in employment or college, the theory being it will be popular with the older electorate and the kids the policy is aimed at are too young to vote against it. Is it me or do you always get that feeling of a cul-de-sac for young workers in Britain when the Tories get in? I remember my first wage was less than a £100 a week and for the full 40 hours under Thatcher, adults all around me doing far less for double the ... more

Advantages Advantages Hopefully will stir up unions.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lacks foresight and proves 'we are not in this together'.

Youngsters today, taking an interest in economics and politics must ponder what their generation has done to deserve such an austere thrashing? No youth club lock-ins, huddled for warmth, sipping mugs of hot Blackcurrant Ribena; painstakingly discussing why the austerity axe has fallen on the heads of the young - because there are no youth clubs now? Not only has the government taken away the only place youths can get respite from their parents, they’ve penalized systematically across the spectrum by endorsing an austerity program that will damage a decade of youth opportunities that’ll in ... more

Advantages Advantages Employers don't have to pay out much.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Young people doing the same job for less pay.

In response to the question at hand, my answer would be an ever resounding no! But I cannot really it at that, as that would be a waste of a review and so I hope that you will now just allow me some time to try and explain what I mean by this! I have worked for the majority of my life since leaving school (apart from one short absence just over two years ago and at present), but for all of that time (and bearing in mind that I was only 18 when I started working) I was actually in fact paid exactly the same as those people who were over the age of 21 - and always have been ever since. I wasn't ... more

Advantages Advantages Possibly make them more attractive to employers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too many to list

Let me just start of by saying I am not very political it gives me a sore head trying to figure out why the government do half of what they do but on this subject no I do not think it is correct they should freeze minimum wage for young people and I have a number of reasons for this. Firstly I know it is rare that a child moves out of their parents at such a young age but I did on my 16th birthday I needed to for both my sanity and safety and this meant that even before I had left school I had to find an income that could fully support myself for everything you need including accommodation and ... more

Advantages Advantages Atleast it hasnt been lowered like alot of other areas

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesnt reflect well against costs of goods etc, equality in pay

Personal accountNot so long ago I was a minimum wage earner and it makes it daunting for any young person coming out of school to the world of work, I remember when I first started work and had the hard reality hit me that my dad was right when he said 'the best years of your life are school years then after that its hard work'. At the moment this doesnt affect me as I am unemployed searching for work (which will at present be minimum wage for over 21's). I am not satisfied with minimum wage as when i was at college working part time, the work I did didn't reflect the hours or work I put in ... more

Advantages Advantages No advantage for the young

Disadvantages Disadvantages Less money to live on

i do not beleive in freezing minimum wage for the young. Its bad enough for them at the moment as it is. Why does the government need to decide what anybody gets paid. All they do is collect everybody's taxes and half of the time waste it on rubbish then the tax payer has to feel the pinch for them to sort it out. Young people dont get that much money anyway. My son worked at a Leisure centre for nearly a year on minimum wage and it was very hard for him because he has to travel on two buses or bus and tram to gat to work, he ended up spending most of the money he earned on travelling. It is ... more
