5 Stars Loyal, trustworthy, talkative & nosey! Review with images 09/01/2005

Advantages Advantages Loyal & trustworthy dogs. Hardy little things too!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages They're little barkers!

When it comes to dogs, I always said I preferred big dogs to little ones. My last dog, Jazz, was a Labrador. (Those of you who have been on Ciao a long time will remember me writing about her after she died). I never dreamed in a million years about getting a small dog. After Jazz died, I went a year without having a dog around. Then, I got Ollie. I acquired him from a friend. When I got him he was just 3 months old. He was so small and fluffy. He had that puppy smell about him. And his bark was a yap. I took him to the vet to get his injections. He cried and yelped like the world was ending ... more

The Jack Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John Russell who bred one of the finest breads of terriers for fox hunting. Personality -------------- The Jack Russell is a happy, bold and energetic dog they are extemely loyal, intelligent and assertive. Their greatest attribute is their working ability, closely followed by their excellent qualities as a companion. They can be equally contented bolting a fox or chasing a toy in your living room or equally content at killing a sock in your living room or a rat in the barn. There assertive nature and boundless energy can sometime be ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Yappy. Chew things. Very obstinate.

~ ~ I don't like Jack Russell Terriers me, or should I say I didn't like Jack Russell Terriers up until relatively recently. ~ ~ There was good reason for my dislike of Jacks, and I'm fairly sure the dislike was mutual, as they didn't seem to get along with me either. My first experience of Jacks was back when I was only a slip of a lad in the early 1970's, and newly moved down to the Home Counties from Scotland to take up a new job as a salesman. I managed to get myself a rather posh apartment in a converted old mansion house near Wokingham deep in the heart of rural Berkshire. The caretaker ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Barking at other dogs

We took over a two year old Jack Russell a month ago, from some friends who were moving house and couldn't take him with them. My husband and kids had been campaigning to have a dog for several years, but I wasn't keen as I knew that I would end up being the one doing all the walks etc and didn't think I could cope with the extra work. However, I'd gradually come around to the idea and decided that a Jack would be the breed that I'd most likely risk, as they were the only type of dog that I'd had experience looking after, as we used to dog-sit Nipper the Jack for my in-laws when they went on ... more

Advantages Advantages no questions asked friendship

    Disadvantages Disadvantages active, vet bills.

I have a little friend and work mate who I know I could always trust to cheer me up when I’m down, be on my side when every one else is against me, give me a big welcome when I haven’t seen him for all of half an hour and through all this. asks very little of me. My friends name is Jack and he’s a tri coloured Jack Russell Terrier. Now a lot of people are very weary of Jack Russell’s simple because they seem to have a bad press, which is not really warranted as with almost all dogs they are as trust worthy as the people who handle them. They get their name from Reverend John Russell who as ... more

Advantages Advantages The best guard dog ever

    Disadvantages Disadvantages ????...none!

I've chosen to review the Jack Russell terrier as I feel that they deserve the time, many people (including myself and my family until about three years ago)! see these dogs as yappy, annoying little creatures that only seem to ever get under your feet, but in fact I have found that this could not possibly be further from the truth. **************HOW IT ALL BEGAN************** Now your probably wondering how somebody of this opinion would become involved with one of these dogs? Well, three years ago my mum and I were driving along a particularly dangerous road when a small white body with ... more

As well as my Chocolate Labrador (please see op in Labrador section!), I own a Jack Russell Terrier dog. He was bought from a local litter for £80. Of all the pups in the litter, this one was the smallest. Now JRT's are normally small, but mine just about takes the biscuit! At six years old, people are still mistaking him for a puppy. Jack Russell's generally have black, white and brown markings, the amount of each varying for each dog. Mine is mainly black on top, with a white stomach and cute little tan eyebrows. From my experience so far, I would say that Jack Russell's are not the easiest ... more

We inherited Jack about 10 years ago he was kept in a shed because the owner’s daughter preferred his brothers to him! Paul my boyfriend swapped him for some tarmac (the owner was a farmer and its quite common for them to need tarmac). Paul took him home and he lived with him and his mum for a few years until we got our own house and he’s been with us ever since. About the Jack Russell breed ----------------------------------- The founder of the breed was Parson John (Jack) Russell. Who bred these great dogs in the nineteenth century. This terrier is supposed to have originally been crossed ... more

    Advantages Advantages bright, cute

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None!

I have a jack russell, Harvey, who is 4 yrs old. He's a lovely little dog and has grown up with my other dogs; 2 labradors and a huskey so i think he's a bit confused about the whole chasing rats side of life - a common association people have with jack russells, and much prefers spending his days eating jumbones and watching telly - lucky little thing! Exercise: As mentioned i do have 3 other dogs, all of who need considerably more exercise than harvey. I'm at uni but when i'm back home and have the time i'll walk them all twice a day for upto an hour each time - he doesn't struggle and ... more

After having 4 dogs, we thought that our family was complete until one day a little dog came scratching our door. On opening, we found a litte pup, hair trodden in and matted, sores on his belly, ribs showing and altogether just a little mess. After making sure he was ok healthwise we bathed him, which took 4 lots of shampoo to remove the dirt, and started feeding him up. As the days went on, we could see he was barely 3 months old but was so friendly. He got on brilliantly with our other dogs, soon becoming their little mascot. Wherever he went, the other four went, so it was like living in a ... more
