Wuthering Heights Vs Jane Eyre: Round 1!

Advantages: Brillantly written, interesting story, thought-provoking.
Disadvantages: It's not Wuthering Heights!

...in her ways. I see Jane Eyre very much like a biography of her life at times, and absolutely fascinating to think that maybe, Charlotte wrote it from real experiences. I know that the school that Jane attends (Lowood) is based on the school her sisters attended – which ended their lives, but is any of it fiction? When it was first released in 1847 many people thought it was a biography under the name of the editor it was published (Curer Bell, ...
...ways, and beliefs. Charlotte, like Jane was never that religious, but had the fact that “God is the World” shoved down her throat by her Father (who was a vicar). Her reluctance to love her “God” and worship him like a fool is very interesting to read, and I can’t help seeing the likenesses. ♠♦ Jane Eyre ♠♦ Jane Eyre follows the life of a young woman who was never really wanted by anyone. Jane Eyre

Advantages: Excellently written
Disadvantages: None

As a bildungsroman, Jane Eyre follows the journey of its heroine's development from youth to intellectual maturity. As the novel progresses the theme of religion is one that takes a strong hold on Jane herself. In order to analyse the question, one must differentiate between Paganism and Christianity. The simple difference is that Paganism believes in a variety of Gods, each controlling a different aspect of life. Although Pagans deem their God's ...
...Gods. Throughout the novel, Jane struggles to find a right balance between the Christian faith and her attentions to nature and Paganism. Throughout Jane's experiences at Lowood, and even just before she is admitted there, she tells the reader, in passing, about the frequency of religion in the Institution. While she is still in the care of Mrs. Reed, she first meets Mr. Brocklehurst. In her conversation with him, he asks her many questions about ...

In the December Wuthering Heights by Emily and Agnes Grey by Anne were also published. In 1848 Branwell died soon followed by Emily, and less than six months later in 1849 Anne also died. ...~The Book~ Jane Eyre is an orphan, living with relatives she really cannot stand and obviously do not like her, Jane narrates the story herself and it starts with her being packed off to Boarding School. Sound familiar - JK Rowling possibly took inspiration from this for her character Harry Potter but the similarity between the two characters ends here. This book is set in the 18th Century and unlike Harry she hated school more than she hated home. ...

She meets Helen, a delightful but fragile girl, who shows her the first love and friendship she has ever experienced. She comes up against unpleasantness too, but shows her strength of character by her determination, and eventually becomes a mature and trusted pupil. Jane is immediately attracted to Mr Rochester, but has no serious thoughts of romance since he is from a different class, is considerably older than her, and is surrounded by attractive women, one of whom he is apparently betrothed to. Advantages: Mr. Rochester, good old-fashioned romance
Disadvantages: Part of the plot turns horribly coincidental

...That's what I love about Jane Eyre: it is very readable and easy to understand, while still being a little challenging and a brilliant novel. I first read this when I was thirteen and still enjoy it immensely. I was surprised when I read other reviews here who thought it would be too hard for younger people/children, as I find it to be the most accessible Bronte novel and one of the most accessible 19th Century novels. And there's a lot in it for ...
...that the novel is called Jane Eyre and everything, but Mr. Rochester is my favourite character and the most interesting. He doesn't follow the standard formula for 19th Century romantic heroes: he is wealthy and Jane doesn't think he's very handsome and he has a bad temper, but he also possesses a kind of 'rugged charm'. He is surprisingly 'modern' for a 19th Century character too; he takes care of Adele, the orphan of a French singer who he once ...

A Timeless Classic

Advantages: Great Plot, Good Characters, Meaningful
Disadvantages: A bit long, may be hard to read for some people.

I first started studying Jane Eyre whilst doing A-Level English Literature, and the first time I picked it up, I thought it was going to be boring. It looked pretty long, and the synopsis of the plot I had looked like a sentimental love drama, and it was written in 1847! That can't be cool, I thought to myself. But I was wrong, once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down, I found myself admiring Jane - and Charlotte for writing about ...
...The Plot : Jane is telling us of her life, and she starts when she is ten, where she is bullied and shunned by the adoptive family she is staying with, the Reed's. She gets sent away from the family, to a Christian boarding school, run by a man called Mr. Brocklehurst. The school does give children an education, but it is cold, they are underfed, and it is basically very strict, and all the children are deprived of what they need to be happy. At ...

Advantages: the more you look at this book, the more there is to find in it.
Disadvantages: can't think of any.

Having first read Jane Eyrie as part of a degree course, I was surprised by the idea that it has largely been considered a work for children and young people. Despite initial appearances, this is quite a dark and troubling text. Jane Eyre has a ghastly and unhappy childhood at the hands of extended family members who treat her dreadfully. She is then sent away to a boarding school, but here she initially receives terrible treatment again. The schoolis ...

Rochester owns a large gloomy house and has a young ward who might or might not be ...

Jane Eyre was first published in 1846 under the pen name of Curer Bell and is regarded by many as not only her best piece of work but as one of the greatest romance epics of all time. The first ten chapters of the novel address a number which all help the growth of the main character in the form of consistent crises which force her into developmental judgements. Jane trusts her intuition and usually reacts to it immediately, an example of this is when she receives a reply to her advertisement as a governess, it I her only reply so far but she does not wait for another as her instinct tells her to pursue that one. On the other hand, Jane is also very deliberate in many of her decisions as she carefully weighs the pros against the cons for each situation, such as when she tries to reform ...

Disadvantages: Jane Eyre

...As far as i'm concerned Jane Eyre is an exception. Yes this is a book that is heralded as a feminist book, and a work of genius. But having read it several times I'm still at a loss to work out why. The plot of Jane Eyre concerns Janes attempts to survive. Goth-Babe

Advantages: Definitely readible and is a good reflection of women at that time
Disadvantages: The ending is arguably a little too idealistic.

So Charlotte Bronte insists that Jane is a plain Jane. Anyway the title Goth-babe was just a joke seeing as to the gothic nature of the novel and how in some parts of this country, looking goth is in. Basically, it's a love story. More often than not, these classics are actually love stories set in their period to reflect issues of society and the distinctions between gender and class. As I was studying this novel for A-Level literature, the term ...
...a compromise between the characters Jane and Rochester such that their social status and positions and characters are more welly moulded to suit each other. Their strong sense of belonging to each other is much too dramatic for some people's liking. However, look for certain links between the famous "sermon on the mount" that is blibical in nature and you will find that interestingly enough, Bronte has based the entire structure of the novel on that ...

...been anything more romantic than Jane Eyre? Much has been written about the comparison of Jane’s young life and the experiences of the author. The school where the young orphan is sent and the friendship she forms there with a sickly girl has a parallel in Bronte’s own tormented childhood. But I think it is misleading to assume that the author has added nothing original to this marvelous story. Jane is plain, there is no doubt about that and this ...

Instead of setting impossible goals for the reader, we are presented with the very attainable characteristics of humility, goodness and virtue. It is this attainability which makes Jane such a sympathetic character in contrast to, say, Emma Woodhouse or even Catherine Earnshaw. Jane is grounded. She has few expectations and ...

Jane had some tough times in her childhood, orphaned as a baby she was brought up by her cruel Aunt Reed (by marriage) and seemed always spirited and feisty, which was often perceived as rebellion.
