Advantages Advantages Brillantly written, interesting story, thought-provoking.

Disadvantages Disadvantages It's not Wuthering Heights!

It’s an understatement to say that Charlotte Bronte was bossy and immediate in her ways. I see Jane Eyre very much like a biography of her life at times, and absolutely fascinating to think that maybe, Charlotte wrote it from real experiences. I know that the school that Jane attends (Lowood) is based on the school her sisters attended – which ended their lives, but is any of it fiction? When it was first released in 1847 many people thought it was a biography under the name of the editor it was published (Curer Bell, Charlotte’s “disguise” as a writer). Jane and ... more

Advantages Advantages A wonderful, leisurely flow, great character development, amazing phrases

Disadvantages Disadvantages Focus firmly centered on Jane only

During all the years that I've been studying literature, I must have studied this book countless times, both in French and in English for academic purposes. But this is a book that I also adore on a more personal level, and this goes to the extent that I can today proudly say that I must have read Jane Eyre a zillion times so far. There is something about Charlotte Brontë's writing that never fails to charm me. She writes with amazing grace and flair and the novel itself has a poetic flow to it that makes me want to read some of the words out loud- and trust me, some of the phrases really do ... more

    Advantages Advantages Excellently written

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

As a bildungsroman, Jane Eyre follows the journey of its heroine's development from youth to intellectual maturity. As the novel progresses the theme of religion is one that takes a strong hold on Jane herself. In order to analyse the question, one must differentiate between Paganism and Christianity. The simple difference is that Paganism believes in a variety of Gods, each controlling a different aspect of life. Although Pagans deem their God's are perfect they understand that no one God can control the whole world. Pagans believe that everything happens for a reason, whether it is a ... more

I was first introduced to this book when I took AS Level English as a mature student. I was about 21 at the time and loved the book from the moment I started to read. ~The Author~ Charlotte Bronte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire on 21st April 1816, the third daughter of Patrick and Maria Bronte. In1817 her brother Patrick Branwell Bronte was born, with Emily the following year and finally Anne in 1820. In April 1820 the family moved to Haworth, on the moors where her father took up the post of curate until his death in 1861. A year after moving to Haworth Maria Bronte died leaving 5 daughters ... more

Advantages Advantages A great classic, good plot, wonderful characters, happy ending

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little melodramatic in places, could be considered old-fashioned

The story opens with Jane, aged ten and an orphan, living with some ghastly relatives who dislike her, and cousins who bully her. An opening scenario which has inspired many novels over the years, including, of course, those by JK Rowling. Jane, who narrates the book, hates her relatives with a passion, and is sent away to boarding school. However the similarity with Harry Potter ends at this point. Firstly the setting is that of the late 18th century, and secondly the school is even more unpleasant than her home. At school, Jane does her best to learn, but finds the rules oppressive. She ... more

Advantages Advantages Mr. Rochester, good old-fashioned romance

Disadvantages Disadvantages Part of the plot turns horribly coincidental

I'm a big fan of Charlotte Bronte and it never fails to amaze me that some people fnd her novels hard to read: they don't use any complicated story-telling methods, the language is fairly common with only a few words you may need to look up in the dictionary and she writes very clearly. That's what I love about Jane Eyre: it is very readable and easy to understand, while still being a little challenging and a brilliant novel. I first read this when I was thirteen and still enjoy it immensely. I was surprised when I read other reviews here who thought it would be too hard for younger ... more

Advantages Advantages brilliantly written, characters brought to life, easy read

Disadvantages Disadvantages youre left wanting to no more!

I have always enjoyed reading but had never properly ventured into the realms of the classics. I had only ever been told to reading them at GCSE but when I tried I never could get past the first page. Luckily though, this never happened to me with Jane Eyre and so had no prevvious meeting with the book and so 2 years later at 18, I decided it was time for me to get to grips with these famous books! I picked Jane Eyre by chance. I had been reading the Princess Diaries series(! lol) and some of the characters had been mentioned in these books and so when I went to the bookshop, decided to start ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Plot, Good Characters, Meaningful

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit long, may be hard to read for some people.

I first started studying Jane Eyre whilst doing A-Level English Literature, and the first time I picked it up, I thought it was going to be boring. It looked pretty long, and the synopsis of the plot I had looked like a sentimental love drama, and it was written in 1847! That can't be cool, I thought to myself. But I was wrong, once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down, I found myself admiring Jane - and Charlotte for writing about her, and the story whilst yes, it is a sentimental love drama, had a lot of originality and interest to keep the reader hooked. The Plot : Jane is ... more

Advantages Advantages the more you look at this book, the more there is to find in it.

Disadvantages Disadvantages can't think of any.

Having first read Jane Eyrie as part of a degree course, I was surprised by the idea that it has largely been considered a work for children and young people. Despite initial appearances, this is quite a dark and troubling text. Jane Eyre has a ghastly and unhappy childhood at the hands of extended family members who treat her dreadfully. She is then sent away to a boarding school, but here she initially receives terrible treatment again. The schoolis run for profti, and largely seems to contain unwanted girls with families who carelittle for them. Their lives are unhappy, dominated by harsh ... more

Advantages Advantages Emotional conflict, Mental anguish, Phyiscal suffering and Spiritual strife

Disadvantages Disadvantages The characters that truly deserve punishment don't get their comeuppance

Jane Eyre was first published in 1846 under the pen name of Curer Bell and is regarded by many as not only her best piece of work but as one of the greatest romance epics of all time. The first ten chapters of the novel address a number which all help the growth of the main character in the form of consistent crises which force her into developmental judgements. Not all of her decisions are conscious ones; many of them are made from her heart i.e. when her cousin John Reed is bullying her at the start of the novel her response is from instinct as she attacks him for throwing a book at her head ... more
