Advantages Advantages comfortable, well-equipped, outstanding off-road

    Disadvantages Disadvantages thirsty, vague steering

There's something about American cars that I just love. I think it's their crudeness - the obnoxiousness of the way they are built. For example: the Japanese build cars for speed and economy through gizmos and gadgets, technology more powerful than once sent man to the moon; the Europeans achieve speed and frugality through precision engineering, the perfection of machine and hand working together. Over the other side of the Pond, however, Americans throw away the need for economy by keeping their fuel prices extremely low. They then make a car go fast by simply putting a bigger engine in it ... more

Advantages Advantages Powerful, tough as old boots, FUN!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Load space, fuel consumption

After a prolonged period of dithering I finally managed to convince myself that I really did "need" a 4WD vehicle for my leisure activities. All my previous cars have been 2WD and although I never managed to get any of them actually bogged when off the tarmac, it was a close run thing at times, even when shod with mud and snow tyres! After a few test drives I eliminated the smaller contenders, like RAV4s and Suzukis and was left with a choice of Land/Range Rover, Mitsubishi Shogun, Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Cherokee, Isuzu Trooper, Vauxhall Monterey or Vauxhall Frontera. The Frontera dropped ... more

5 Stars Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Orvis Review with images 19/11/2003
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Looks the business. People get out of your way ! Engine is very athletic ;-)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Put your foot down and you see the petrol gauge drop !!!

I recently bought a bargain Cherokee Orvis from e-bay at a very realistic price, bearing in mind the number plate is worth £1,000 !!! The Cherokee I bought was a 4.0 litre Orvis model imported from America 1n 1994, so yes, it is left hand drive and is auto (which I love). The previous owner wanted something even bigger (!) as he and his friends are regular surfers, they needed the board space. It appears to be a real head turner and people do give way to you ALWAYS when driving it, the Orvis has the gold wheels to which people seem to like. It handles well, is very comfortable and is very easy ... more

Advantages Advantages A real 4wd without too many frills

Disadvantages Disadvantages 4l 6cyl is very thirsty !

After spending a long time driving small(ish) front-wheel drive cars (Astra, Cavalier, Alfa 156) I was suddenly faced with a couple of changes in my lifestyle... a daughter, a job that required me to go places that my Alfa simply couldn't get to without a lot of changes to the bodywork, and a boisterous dog ! While the 156 was a great family car, I needed something a little more practical, with more bootspace and a heck of a lot more rugged. After searching around and looking at a few of the 4wds on the markets I'd managed to rule them out... there where very few that I actually trusted to ... more

Advantages Advantages FAST, very American looking, always makes you smile, sounds great

Disadvantages Disadvantages a tad on the thirsty side of frugle... will help pay for trident.

I bought my Cherokee in September of 2006. I'd been on the look out for one for about 6 months, I was thinking of either a Cherokee or a Ford Explorer. When i finally came to my senses I went for the Cherokee. I'm so glad I did. I have a 1994 Marlborough 4L edition in metallic green with creme leather interior. It only had 89,000 on the clock with full Chrysler service history... for £2500. I was very happy with that price. The car is in mint condition, doesn't look as though any one has ever sat in the rear seats or used the luggage space at the rear. Its a great car to drive, when you first ... more

Advantages Advantages Small enough to fit in garage, high viewpoint, equipment levels great, never been better value, great looks, great to drive

Disadvantages Disadvantages fuel consumption heavy, suspension a bit primitive

The classic shape Jeep Cherokee is due to be phased out in the next two years, to be replaced by the all new Jeep Liberty (though it's hard to imagine Jeep letting the Cherokee name go). Take the chance and go for one of the classic shape Cherokees which are now incredibly good value. For about 20K you get a capable off roader that looks like a big Tonka toy, fits in a normal height garage (unlike some 4 w d cars)and is great fun to drive. Never mind the cost of petrol, go for the 4 litre straight six if possible with leather and the electric and lighting packs. This will give you auto box ... more

Advantages Advantages 4 wheel drive and plenty of torque

Disadvantages Disadvantages Fuel cosumption and lack of availability of spares

I moved to the country from town and the Merc was just not suitable for the muddy lanes, pot holes and cow poo! So I got the Jeep. I hate the underpower of diesel and thought the 2.5L petrol in a 4x4 may not be powerful enough to pull my caravan, so it had to be the 4.0L. I was expecting the fuel consumption of 14mpg, so I got a LPG converted one, which halves the cost, equivalent of over 30mpg. The only problem with this, is the frequency in which it needs filling. At 14mpg and 60 litre tank, it doesn't go far. So I have to plan journeys around LPG filling stations, which are few and far ... more

5 Stars Quick review of Jeep Cherokee 4.0 by JezCougar 29/08/2008
I bought my 4 Litre 1995 Jeep Cherokee a year ago in September 2007. It's black with black leather seats, wood effect trim and electric seats and windows. It has automatic transmission and the power and torque are sufficient to ensure I an pull away from lights or over roundabouts without hesitation. I know it's not got the status of a Range Rover, but it's far more exclusive. I was expecting 18-20 mpg, but this was in my dreams, 13 mpg is more realistic. I'm now running LPG and overall it's cost effective. There's quite a bit of wind noise, but ... more

Advantages Advantages luxury, power and tourque. bullet proof engine.

Disadvantages Disadvantages fuel economy cost of repair and maintenance, depreciation

always always always wanted a cherokee, not sure if it was because of the american look or the fact it just so much better than any other 4x4 ( in my opinion). so i did it, traded my escort in for a 4l black 96 plate jeep cherokee. i loved it, it had all the toys and sounded like a beast wherever i drove it. problems were i found the steering very light which was helpfull on a heavy car but it was so vauge it was scary, on the motorway i would be correcting the steering every few minutes to straighten it out. another thing, you do not buy these cars if your looking for economy driving. two ... more
