PUZZLED.

AdvantagesGets kids away from the television into interaction with others.

DisadvantagesFiddly and time consuming, but can be fun.

"Jigsaw puzzles used to be boring. The pictures were limited to little houses in the country, or seascapes, although over the years, what happened is that companies found that the idea of slotting little pieces of cardboard together with popular. What was not popular was the small range of pictures on the jigsaws, which was something that was easy to put right. I have been doing jigsaws for years, not as much as my mother in law or mother, though ..." Read review

A Puzzling Experience...

AdvantagesThe right puzzle is so much fun to complete

DisadvantagesThe wrong puzzle leads to boredom or frustration

"Of all the presents that get given to my children by well-meaning relatives, the ones that cause the most frustration are puzzles. This is a shame really, because with a little thought puzzles can be a fun and educational way to spend a rainy afternoon. When buying a puzzle for your child you need to take a couple of things into consideration, their age and ability. That 2000 piece puzzle may look amazing, but if your child can't put it together ..." Read review

Pick up the pieces and start all over again

AdvantagesAbsorbing, teaches valuable skills

DisadvantagesCan be too absorbing

"...while containing info about how jigsaw puzzles can be great for children, is also about how adults can enjoy jigsaws, and indeed, enjoy doing them with their children as a family activity. ===================================================== When something is broken into hundreds of pieces, it’s very satisfying to slowly and painstakingly put it back together, bit by bit. It takes endless patience, some skill and a lot of ..." Read review

lots of little pieces

Advantageseducational, fun

Disadvantagescan be frustratimg

"...on tasks for long a jigsaw was perfect. Something to do that did not require a lot of concentration for a long time something she could have on the coffee table by her side and just do one or two pieces then rest, feel an achievement when she finished it days /weeks later. I would recommend a jigsaw, as something to do while recovering from an illness it is something not too taxing to keep you occupied. The problem with jigsaws is their price ..." Read review

Fun for children of all ages

AdvantagesGreat fun to do, educational, improves hand eye co ordination

DisadvantagesCan get frustrating, patience is needed

"Jigsaw puzzles for children? Surely jigsaw puzzles are great for ‘children’ of all ages from 2 to 92!! I know that I don’t really need to say this but a jigsaw is basically a picture which has been cut up into pieces and the idea is to reassemble it using the photograph of the original picture on the lid of the box as a guide. I’m sure we all remember the thick wooden jigsaws from our early childhood – maybe only ..." Read review

MMM... Where Does That Piece Go

AdvantagesEducational and fun for children

DisadvantagesCan get frustrating for a child who struggles to get teh pieces to fit.

"...build up! If the jigsaw is too hard the child will lose interest easily. Jogsaws are the first stage of problem solving and that is a great part of learning! Make it a fun time for the child and they will see jigsaws as being fun to do rather than being hard work! One thing I was always told that Jigsaws were a sign of intelligence and it scared me that my daughter was struggling. But then a few people told me that their children had struggled ..." Read review

More..more..more..

AdvantagesOpportunity for lots of learning

DisadvantagesNeed safe keeping to avoid the late night jigsaw piece hunt.

"...most obvious skill required in jigsaw play is hand-eye co-ordination. (To the non National Curriculum brainwashed amongst us that means making your hand go where your eye wishes it to!) This apparently needs lots of practice as a tot and your jigsaw is an ideal forum for this. Secondly: concentration. Even the simplest of toddler jigsaws require an element of planning, order and stayability probably beyond that required by the majority of their ..." Read review

UPDATED PAID OP, A Puzzling Piece

Advantagesvariety available, good for all ages, fun, educational

Disadvantagesthe pieces often get lost, can be expensive for good ones

"Jigsaw puzzles are - in a similar way to books - toys that grow up with you. From the simple wooden jigsaws with pegs on the pieces, through to a thousand piece 3D puzzle for adults, there is really something for everyone in jigsaws. Not only are they a nice hobby and one that is relatively cheap and fun, but you can also buy such a wide variety of them, that whether you are into Tweenies, kittens or Dr. Who, you will find a jigsaw puzzle on the ..." Here Comes Your 19th Nervous Breakdown

AdvantagesGreat fun for all the family

DisadvantagesCan be really, really frustrating

"...since. What I like about a jigsaw most of all is that it’s something that the whole family can join in, and it’s great exercise for the mind, (both young and old) making you utilise both visual and mental skills. They make a very refreshing change from playing computer games on the new PS2 I bought the wee lass for her Christmas, and are something you can return to again and again. ~ ~ The jigsaws I especially want to tell you all ..." Let's do it again mum

Advantagesfun and education in one

Disadvantages-

"...daughter has loved to do jigsaw puzzles. Starting with the basic large 4-piece wooden ones progressing through 6, 8, 12, 24, 48+ piece cardboard versions of all sizes and themes. Now at 3 she has the ability and patience to work through much more complex puzzles with the smallest of pieces. Last Christmas she received the Tweenies 2 in a box set(1 made up of 12 pieces the other 24) and the same in Teletubbies. Within a few minutes of opening the ..." Read review

A satisfying mind stretching hobby for life

AdvantagesCan be the first stimulating, coordinating problem solving a child does

DisadvantagesLevel of difficulty must fit a chlids ability level

"Jig saw puzzles are probably the first problem solving a very young child gets to do. The baby level puzzles of perhaps two pieces which lift out of a solid wood, or very deep dense cardboard base with a little lifting handle on them can be bashed about until the baby realises that the piece can actually fit the hole. The amazement on their faces is incrdible, and after that they will always want to make the piece fit the hole. You can then ..." Read review

Rainy day toys

AdvantagesBrilliant educational toy

Disadvantagesnone

"I remember doing jigsaws myself as a youngster and the satisfaction I felt when the last piece was put in and the puzzle was complete. Now I'm doing them with my daughter, she loves them and never grows tired of them, they are excellent what I call, " Rainy day toys". Jigsaws are a brilliant form of education encouraging hand and eye co- ordination. Jigsaws can be bought for very little money ( much cheaper than a computer game). The pleasure ..." Read review

Jigsaws help children learn

AdvantagesInexpensive toy with an educational slant

DisadvantagesKeeping track of the pieces

"...year old is an absolute jigsaw fiend, she gets great satisfaction from sucessful putting the pieces together and although I have to spend time helping her it is quality time and well worth it. And she learns: - hand eye co'ordination - matching skills - patience - how thing fit together Her reward is praise from mummy and a colourful picture. You can buy child friendly jigsaws in many different shops and as I say they are not expensive. Why not ..." Read review

AdvantagesVery quick service. The jigsaw arrived within the week. Reasonable quality card.

DisadvantagesPersonalised jigsaws cannot be returned if you are not satisfied. Smallest jigsaw is 35 pieces.

"...up for it. The smallest size jigsaw they offer is 35 pieces. I was unable to find any company in this country that were able to produce personalised jigsaws for young children. All the companies I tried said they were unable to produce jigsaws with 16 to 20 pieces. I would advise anyone hoping to use this service to specify exactly the area of the photograph you wish to include in the jigsaw. They can crop images but will do so at their own ..." Read review
