Johnny Herbert

I have been a fan of Johnny's since watcing him most weekends in formula ford and F3. The horrific crash and most things that have followed have brought him never ending bad luck. Unusually he seems to be repaid on rare occasions with huge amounts of luck, resulting in Grand Prix wins. He has never had the support, or the car that he deserves and this is why he needs to get out of F1. His decision to race in America is excellent. What a bungling baffoon this man is. He has never been the same since his big crash in 1988. He should have hung up the gloves and retired many years ago. He can not do anything in that new car. Fair enough, he has clawed 3 wins in his career but anyone can do that. Basically his talents were never realised so If I was Johnny, rather than become a tail end charlie, I would quit. Instead he is going to USA next year to embarass himself over there in an indy car. When will the man learn?? Johnny Herbert is one of the nicest guys in Formula 1 today. He always has a smile on his face and has a great sense of fun. Unfortunately for him he has no luck. Ever since he was with Lotus he has constantly been in team with un-competitive cars (except for a brief spell with Bennetton where he won races as the teammate of Michael Schumacher, but by default). A few people have berated Johnny for throwing in the towel as far as F1 is concerned and crossing to ChampCart - certainly inferior to F1, but I think Johnny should be allowed ro go and try and make a name in ChampCart. With the exception of his second spell at Benetton, Johnny has been very unlucky with the drives he has had, and the general underperformance of his teams. It was such a shame that Lotus folded underneath him and that he couldn't have flourished there - still a shame that Lotus is gone from F1. Throughout his Formula I career Johnny Herbert has displayed griity,courageous,qualities as a driver. He has,of course,won three grand prix's and but for bad luck might have won several more. It should also be pointed out that Johnny has not driven for the top teams-he has been usually driving either for the middle ranking teams or teams just starting out. Johnny is now one of the veterans on the formula one circuit and he is planning to retire at the end of the season unless he is pushed. Sadly for Johnny I can't envisage him picking too many points up this season. Johnny is well liked by everyone in the paddock and shall take away with him some fantastic memories. His poor displays this season have been disappointing for Jaguar having failed to pick up a single point this season. johnny "the" herbert is probably the most honest F1 driver there is, remember moaning mansell? "oh! the car didn't handle right" or other cobblers that he used to say, johnny herbert is the only driver i've ever heard say "oop's i made a mistake then didn't i!" if given the chance with a car that actually could make the grade (distance and speed)he has got the skill to show just how good he is. the jaguar team is new ( a lot of changes have been made since they took over)from mechanics to top management changes have been made and they have a long way to go. they will probably change 1 or both ... more

Johnny Herbert is constantly being described as ‘the unluckiest driver in F1’ and, as any Formula One fan will know, this does really appear to be true. Virtually every time that Johnny looks like he might score a point or get a podium place, something happens – his car’s engine gives up or he crashes or something happens to prevent him from succeeding. Herbert has done absolutely nothing for Jaguar's return to formula 1. He barely qualifies for the Grand Prix, never mind in the top 10. He is shown up by amateur drivers such as Mazzacane in the Minardi and Verstappen in the Arrows. Jaguar should do what's best and get rid of him quick if they want to beat Prost in the constructors championship. Herbert only got a drive in the Jaguar because he's british and Jackie Stewarts mate. He was very poor at Stewart last year and absolutely appaling at Jaguar this year. I don't know the exact figures but I would bet money that Mr Herbert has the highest retirement rate of any F1 driver over the past decade. He has the ability as his 3 wins demonstrate but he just can't seem to find a reliable car to match his undoubted talent. I don't think he is a potential world champion, but he certainly would have won plenty more points had his cars not let him down. This guy deserves a medal for his cheerful attitude despite his miserable luck, and I'm sure that there are a few more moments of glory is store for him, in what will probably be his last few seasons at ... more
