I thaught i,d write a review on the GPZ500 as i have owned one for 15 months now, untill it was stolen 3 weeks ago! :( allthough it has since been recovered and im hoping to buy it back off the insurance company. (hence my review on the vfr400 nc24 which i braught to replace it) My bike is an 96 reg on an N reg, and had 10,000 miles when i braught it, and i have covered 7500 miles on it. Ok as with the NC24 review i,l start from the front and work my way backwards! Front tyre is 17 inch and lasts a while, it had an original front tyre on it when i got it, and only cost me £60 to replace it, so ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap enough to get you started

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not the best for handling

20 years ago I passed my bike test and have ridden alot of bikes in the past. However I have had a family and steered away from them until recently. Wanting to get back into bikes but not over powering myself I opted for a T reg Kawasaki GPZ500s. It was cheap enough to buy considering a lot of other makes and models of a similar size and age were more expensive. Then I found out why. The 17" wheel does absolutley nothing for handling. It was not the kind of bike to drop to the knees on an open bend, it was the type of bike to slide where it wanted to. She started first time though I did find ... more

Advantages Advantages fast, light, cheap to insure and run

Disadvantages Disadvantages can be lumpy at low revs, likes good tyres and needs regular servicing to keep the engine quiet

Right - a real world review. I have owned 3 of these bikes. I keep each one for 60,000 miles then trade it in against a new model. I ride this bike in all weathers (except snow and ice), doing a 60 mile commute to work every day. Some of the reviews on here make me laugh. For example: "Fuel consumption I found to be no more than an average car" Really? I'd like to see an average car getting 60mpg "just starting out consider something else, A Bandit, or CBR600" Start out riding on a bike weighing over 200kg or a 100bhp sports 600? This is a good way to end up having a nasty accident. "front ... more

Advantages Advantages Durable, reliable, low centre of gravity

    Disadvantages Disadvantages fairly high seat,

I have had two of these. Well I have ridden one and I have just bought a damaged repairable from eBay, it's not on the road yet. The one I HAVE used is the one I bought just after I passed my test. I had a Honda NSR125R and felt quite comfortable on that, so I wanted a similar bike with a bigger engine. I had only passed the restricted test so I could only have a bike of 33BHP or less. I scoured EBay and all the local papers but I couldn't find anything within my budget that I liked and was below 33bhp. I put a search in for under 33bhp on eBay and an auction for a gpz500s came up. It had been ... more

Advantages Advantages Good for the novice

Disadvantages Disadvantages looks like a toy next to modern bikes

If you are new to the bike market and want a good all rounder with good looks then this is the one for you. It has enough power to see of the average family car and it looks like a super bike (at a distance) 600 bikes will leave you standing in third gear but if you want to race this is not the one for you. You do not have to bend to far to reach the throttle so your back won't snap after 3 miles. The sales suggest it is still one of the best for novices and town work, but if you are a novice you will find it perfect, however you will be buying a bigger one within the year. The engine is ... more

Advantages Advantages Low running costs, excellent handling, fast.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Suspension a bit soft if two up.

Having returned to biking after a 35 year break ( yep im 54) i jumped at the offer of a 2001 GPZ500S that had just 3000miles on the clock. The bike had been dropped so there was a bit of remodeling to do but all has been kept origional. I live in france and do a 100 mile round trip every day come hail or sun to work. I get 190 miles per tank but can get much more if i keep the speed down. I can say that the handling is excellent. I was a bit nervous for the first few days as I got back into the swing of biking in the wet again. I had a few very gentle slides but this just helped my cornering ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheep to run handles superb and very fast

Disadvantages Disadvantages Brakes are a tad soft

I have now had my GPZ500 on the road for a week now and bought it two months ago. I previously has a Honda CB250 Two fifty and was restricted to a 33bhp licence but since last week my two years are up! My first day on the bike consisted of the ultimate test. I was riding with a pillion and around 6000 other bikers! I was riding in the Glasgow Yorkhill childerns hospital easter egg run. This bike performed faultlessly easy to control at slow speed and didnt overheat. My first two months owning the bike was spent modding it. I have changed the screen for a semi tint, put on a tank pad Scotland ... more

Advantages Advantages most comfortable bike I have ever owned

Disadvantages Disadvantages a bit light for windy motorway stretches

I upgraded from a Suzi 250 which was a bit under powered for the wife & myself on longer trips so went looking for a 500.We both fell in love with the looks & colour (Blue) sitting on it felt good & with the wife being a little short in the leg found the pillion footrests slightly lower than other 500s. The specs looked quite impressive for it's size & a new bike for a few hundred pounds more than a 2 year old Suzi & cheaper finance to boot finally convinced us. I only use it mainly for work & have found it to be reliable & fast on the acceleration making it great in traffic. On the odd long ... more

    Advantages Advantages Size, cost.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Maintenance cost.

I brought mine brand new with a 33bhp restrictor, as soon as I passed my test. It was a good step up from the 125cc that i learnt on, without giving me the chance to do anything excessively dangerous. I found it great for getting to and from work with the good power and small size that makes dodging through traffic jams quite simple. Fuel efficiency is fantastic too. I recently took the limiter off after I had held my license for 2 years, and now the bikes performs comfortably at high motorway speeds. I have however found maintenence expensive, but I put this mainly down to the excessive ... more

This bike is a touch of class as it has the looks and the style of any good sports bike.has enough power for the road a superb bike which i would advise anyone to buy this bike.this bike comes in a range of colours and is a good handler on the road as it is nippy and a good handler.this bike is good for getting around the town and when you hit the country you can let the throttle out with the long straights and get the knee down on the sharp turns.the country would be a good trip for the sights and the amazing, magnificient roads. ... more
