Advantages Advantages In principle, self-determination is always desirable

Disadvantages Disadvantages In practice, individual cases differ and the outcome can be problematical

Taken literally, this proposition requires little thought and certainly doesn't merit a full review. Yes, of course Scotland should be free to declare its independence from Serbia. I am yet to hear a cogent contrary argument. It's a non-debate, and whoever dreams up "current debate" questions for Ciao should have stopped to think for a second and drafted this one more carefully. So let's not take it literally, and address two related and, I hope, more intelligible questions, even if they're not exactly what Ciao asked: 1. Does the experience of Kosovo in relation to Serbia have any lessons ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unhappy political tension :(

**This is my personnel opinion and not of any other parties etc… Kosovo and Scotland are two very different places. I personally do not know much about Kosovo and its situation but have heard all about it in the media. It has around 2 million people living there, in which a majority is ethnic Albanian. Kosovo, everyone may remember, was in conflict with Yugoslav and Serbian troops in the 1990's, which eventually ended in Kosovo being handed to the UN (United Nations) and was able to enforce democracy etc. During this time, talks took place, to try to get Kosovo its independence. The first ... more

Advantages Advantages National self-determination is a positive thing

Disadvantages Disadvantages Could be a weak state reliant on international aid, may unsettle the Balkans further

As yet another region of the former Yugoslavia declares independence the international community holds it breath to see what happens. While the United States and the majority of member states of the EU have recognized the independence of Kosovo, the reaction from Russia and three EU states is not so welcoming. From the very beginning the British Foreign Secretary, David Milliband made clear his intention to give immediate recognition to Kosovo when independence was finally declared and the Americans followed. Other counties who will gave unreserved recognition of what will be Europe's forty ... more

Kososvo declares independence from Serbia. If Kosovo why not Scotland? Well it's only fitting that Ciao made this part of their current debate, as most people who have watched the news in the past few days, and or weeks would have heard that Kososvo has finally gained its independence from the Serbian Nation. Now studying economics, we have done several modules on Politics, and war as part of our studies, we have to some extent been covering the Kososvo and Serbia story for some time now, furthermore I actually have friends at university whom are either Serbian or Kososvo, so its even more ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Loss of control & distribution of economic power.

Independence, Independence, Independence. I think the majority of Britain supports, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and other countries, to become sovereign states of independence. Because it's our ideals that want to focus on peace and independence, and countries that want to be free, and can support and govern them-selves, should be free. As Britain's we personally accept multi-cultural ism, it has become part of our everyday life-style, and each is accepted upon British nationals as equal. However, there is still the debate as to whether, U.N intervention, was at all practical, and legal ... more

The Question - Kosovo declares independence from Serbia why not Scotland? I will try to get my point across by giving a brief outline of the facts surrounding the 2 countries and then offer my conclusion. Scotland - The Facts Scotland was brought into a union with England fully in 1707 with the signing of the Act of Union, many Scots were against this and it may have been a very different matter were it not for the Scottish landowners who made up the majority of the then Scottish Parliment being threatened with a cattle export ban by the English. The terms of this union allowed the Scots to ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages I wrote it!!?!?!?

The situation in the Balkan States is far more complicated, than that of Scotland. To give you an idea, it would be like Scotland wanting to splinter into many smaller Countries mainly on National and Religious grounds. e.g. a new Country called Glasgow, one called Dundee, one called Aberdeen. When Yugoslavia was one Nation, made up of different parts, these parts wanted independence. e.g. Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia Herzegovnia, Slovenia. But the powers that be did not want the Country splintering. This led to the atrocious war, massacres and genocidal crimes of which evidence is still being ... more

Advantages Advantages It might shut Sean Connery up from prattling on about it

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far too many to list here!

The only people who would seriously benefit from an independent Scotland would be the beaurocrats, accountants and politicians who would work such a plan to their own financial advantage. Me? I'm a Scot living in England, have been for over 10 years now, and see no reason for us to become separate nations after all these hundreds of years. The current autonomy which has been granted via devolved parliament is fine as it is. Taking it that final step further would do more damage than good in the UK as a whole, and create more ill feeling between two generally friendly countries. Do you really ... more

In this discussion talking about economics and social history is in my view not addressing the issue. Maybe it is a small side issue. Government and political history is what is required. The title of the discussion is in not very well phrased literally.Though the review ought to draw a link between the two different problems of kosovo's independence and the scottish long term desire to gain their full independence from london westminster. My updated short review conclusion is that whilst politics in kosovo based on the delicate situation that has blighted Kosovo for many years, their own ... more

Language, culture and traditions make us what we are, and gives us our identity. Sharing these aspects with other cultures results in conflict. A conflict arises from the land which the people of the country dwell. The land which is so rightfully the people's land, for they have worked, fought and died for. It seems only right to value cultures and give them back what they deserve, their own land of beliefs a place where their cultures and traditions are accepted. Seperate to the autonomy of the governments and men with power.
