Independence and Interdependence

AdvantagesIn principle, self-determination is always desirable

DisadvantagesIn practice, individual cases differ and the outcome can be problematical

"Taken literally, this proposition requires little thought and certainly doesn't merit a full review. Yes, of course Scotland should be free to declare its independence from Serbia. I am yet to hear a cogent contrary argument. It's a non-debate, and whoever dreams up "current debate" questions for Ciao should have stopped to think for a second and drafted this one more carefully. So let's not take it literally, and address two related and, I hope, ..." Read review

Another 16 Year Olds Debating Review

AdvantagesTwo free countries, Everybody benefits

DisadvantagesUnhappy political tension :(

"**This is my personnel opinion and not of any other parties etc… Kosovo and Scotland are two _very_ different places. I personally do not know much about Kosovo and its situation but have heard all about it in the media. It has around 2 million people living there, in which a majority is ethnic Albanian. Kosovo, everyone may remember, was in conflict with Yugoslav and Serbian troops in the 1990's, which eventually ended in Kosovo being handed ..." Read review

The 'Independence' condiment for Fish

AdvantagesCuriously fascinating in a warped way

DisadvantagesThe Scots have to vote

"If Independence was a condiment to go with fish, Salmond would do a Victor Kiam styled _‘Remington’_ advert and buy the condiment factory; _"I liked Independence so much, I bought the factory"_ ; broadly speaking it sounds ridiculous, how can you buy into a condiment which has an incredulous amount of fishy content? Naturally, a fish-monger may have a nose for this kind of stench and grow immune to the pungency. Kosovo’s is comparatively a walk in ..." Read review

The great divide

AdvantagesNational self-determination is a positive thing

DisadvantagesCould be a weak state reliant on international aid, may unsettle the Balkans further

"As yet another region of the former Yugoslavia declares independence the international community holds it breath to see what happens. While the United States and the majority of member states of the EU have recognized the independence of Kosovo, the reaction from Russia and three EU states is not so welcoming. From the very beginning the British Foreign Secretary, David Milliband made clear his intention to give immediate recognition to Kosovo ..." Read review

"Kososvo declares independence from Serbia. If Kosovo why not Scotland? Well it's only fitting that Ciao made this part of their current debate, as most people who have watched the news in the past few days, and or weeks would have heard that Kososvo has finally gained its independence from the Serbian Nation. Now studying economics, we have done several modules on Politics, and war as part of our studies, we have to some extent been covering the ..." Read review

Independence, Independence, Independence.

AdvantagesFreedom

DisadvantagesLoss of control & distribution of economic power.

"Independence, Independence, Independence. I think the majority of Britain supports, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and other countries, to become sovereign states of independence. Because it's our ideals that want to focus on peace and independence, and countries that want to be free, and can support and govern them-selves, should be free. As Britain's we personally accept multi-cultural ism, it has become part of our everyday life-style, and ..." Read review

Independence Equals Identity

AdvantagesA Country in its own right

DisadvantagesA lot of fuss for not much else

"The Question - Kosovo declares independence from Serbia why not Scotland? I will try to get my point across by giving a brief outline of the facts surrounding the 2 countries and then offer my conclusion. Scotland - The Facts Scotland was brought into a union with England fully in 1707 with the signing of the Act of Union, many Scots were against this and it may have been a very different matter were it not for the Scottish landowners who ..." Flower of Scotland

AdvantagesReview of Scottish Independence

DisadvantagesI wrote it!!?!?!?

"The situation in the Balkan States is far more complicated, than that of Scotland. To give you an idea, it would be like Scotland wanting to splinter into many smaller Countries mainly on National and Religious grounds. e.g. a new Country called Glasgow, one called Dundee, one called Aberdeen. When Yugoslavia was one Nation, made up of different parts, these parts wanted independence. e.g. Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia Herzegovnia, Slovenia. But ..." Read review

Independent Scotland? Don't hold your breath!

AdvantagesIt might shut Sean Connery up from prattling on about it

DisadvantagesFar too many to list here!

"The only people who would seriously benefit from an independent Scotland would be the beaurocrats, accountants and politicians who would work such a plan to their own financial advantage. Me? I'm a Scot living in England, have been for over 10 years now, and see no reason for us to become separate nations after all these hundreds of years. The current autonomy which has been granted via devolved parliament is fine as it is. Taking it that final step ..." Read review

one problem always leads to another.

AdvantagesNo comment

DisadvantagesNo comment lol

"In this discussion talking about economics and social history is in my view not addressing the issue. Maybe it is a small side issue. Government and political history is what is required. The title of the discussion is in not very well phrased literally.Though the review ought to draw a link between the two different problems of kosovo's independence and the scottish long term desire to gain their full independence from london westminster. Quick review of Kososvo declares independence from Serbia. If Kosovo why not Scotland?

"Language, culture and traditions make us what we are, and gives us our identity. Sharing these aspects with other cultures results in conflict. A conflict arises from the land which the people of the country dwell. The land which is so rightfully the people's land, for they have worked, fought and died for. It seems only right to value cultures and give them back what they deserve, their own land of beliefs a place where their cultures and traditions are accepted. Seperate to the autonomy of the governments and men with power.

If Kosovo jumped off a bridge...

AdvantagesIndependance?

DisadvantagesLack of funds for Scotland, loss of political voice, power and identity

"Having both Scottish and English heritage I spend a lot of time in both countries. Other than some long-standing jokes and steretoypes neither country have any real reason to break away from each other. We get along just fine, and we both stand to gain from remaining united. However, I think the main answer is a simple one. Neither country can really afford to split apart. Alone, Scotland may not have the funds to deal with all their social problems. ..." Read review

Kosovo Independence ¦ Scotland Devolution

AdvantagesScotland's Independence - Have Relevant Legislation

DisadvantagesScotland's Independence - Causes Restrictions Un-neccessarily such as travelling to Scotland

"Kosovo is able to fend and run its economy independently and that away from Serbia. It also is host to many natural resources in which to generate the basic running of the country and possibly start off trade whereas Scotland holds resources such as green land but needs development, this is why government has recognised this an accordingly gave Scotland an assembly in which power is devolved for them to act seperately in areas applicable. An example ..." Read review

Scotland's Dream of Independence

AdvantagesMore money for the English

DisadvantagesAre there any?

"Generally speaking the Scots have an extremely bad attitude towards the English. I don't think they've ever forgiven us for disposing of William Wallace or winning the Football World Cup. They were also somewhat peeved about us having theIr Stone of Scone - but at least we've returned that to them now which could be construed as the first step towards letting them achieve their dream of independence. I would imagine the majority of English would ..." Read review

Its Up To Them

AdvantagesIts up to them.

DisadvantagesCan they afford to fund themselves?

"I think that if a country really wants independence and its what the people want then why not? People aren't going to be able to agree 100% on stuff so there will be people unhappy at whatever you do so sometimes you just have to do what the majority wants. As for Scotland then why not? But if Scotland was to go alone then they would have to go without any subisdy from England (Europe would most likely throw money at it so they won't be too much ..." Read review
