...the LiteOn. I already used LiteOn CD writers in my PC's so new the name. Did some research and even found that LiteOn manufacture DVD drives for Sony of all people! Apparently they are one of the largest manufacturers of DVD drives in the world?
So, this machine could write to DVD + and - R and CD's, it had a 160GB hard disc, allowed you to edit video and all for…£280.00! - Bargain! Of course it's now even cheaper, but even 6 months ago when I got ... ...many different complaints on the LiteOn forums but these seemed to refer to the older model. LiteOn actually seem to monitor some of these forum comments and release firmware patches to solve them. Yes this machine can be updated by downloading a program from the internet, writing it to CD and installing it on your LiteOn yourself….what other manufacturers do that? As far as I'm aware, none of the main stream ones like Sony or Panasonics do it?

The Liteon LVW-5045 is a combi DVD/HD recorder with integrated 160GB hard drive. After reading several reviews abou the Liteon LVW-5045 it was touch and go as to whether to part with my hard earned cash and ditch my old VCR. ...to download updates from the LiteOn website periodically to keep it up to date.
It plays all types of DVD's, CD's, MP3's, picture discs, VCD's, SVCD's, Data discs, Media discs and will copy all discs as long as they are not protected by copyright. It will even play Nero media files taken off your PC.
It records DVD RW/R +/-, CD RW/R +/-, will write in MP3 format if the original was in MP3.
Its not that slow either, its a great all rounder and ... ...machine and he swears by it. I connect my camera to it and record all the pictures and video clips straight to disc!!
For the price that its selling for these days, its a real bargain, a must for all families and people who love TV and videos!!!!
I can supply a list of accepted discs to anyone who drops me a line and asks, just let me know and I'll get back to you ASAP.

The Liteon 5045 is a good machine at the low end of the market place.
The instructions are clear, although a bit literal with the Taiwanese translation. Set up was simple, although integrating satellite took a little more time.
The operation is straight forward, with a quick operation feature to undertake the major operations. The hard disc is massive, offering almost 200 hours of storage on slowest recording speed. The machine offers 5 recording ... ...speed the poorer quality the recording.
Copy time from dvd to hdd is about 20mins for a 2 hour film, but it comes with built in copyright protection so you cannot copy protected tapes willy nilly.
Some early versions had problems with sound/picture synchronisation, as did mine, but a simple download from the website cured that.
All in all, I have found it to be well worth the investment with all you would expect from a machine in this sector of ...

Bought this machine early December 2005. About 6 months later I decided to transfer some memories from my camcorder, first time I came to transfer saved programmes to disk - it wouldn't.
The machine didn't recognise any brand of blank DVD or CD.
Cheeky so-and-sos at the helpline suggested I try a brand disk! I was using the TDK ones that came free with the machine as well as Maxell and Tesco cheapies - nothing was recognised.
Helpline staff suggested ... ...load it...The machine didn't recognise the disk.
In fact, it wouldn't even play shop bought films!
Helpline promised to pick the machine up for repair.
All told, I took 5 days off work - and lost pay to wait in. I even rang the helpline on the days & they assured me I was down for a collection.
Eventually, they agreed to drop a new unit off - another day off work.
Thenew unit wouldn't accept input from the scart...

From reading the specifiaction, this machine should be capable of taking the place of many other AV units in one compact unit. It can record to Hard drive, download movies using firewire, write DVDs and load mp3 files.
However, the DVD writer gradually stops working until even DVD reading of pre-recorded disks stops. The warranty has up to know proved useless as Lite-on seem unable to collect the device after 4 attempts and over 1 month of trying. ...

Advantages: Most Disc Media Is Compatible (+ - R RW) Easy To Use. Very Affordable Disadvantages: Earlier models have a few trouble, but since the new firmware has started to be installed at the factory this is a thing of the past.
When I got this machine home I thought that there must be a catch !!!!! It was nearly half the price of some if its competitors and it has the same features. WHY?
This is one of the most used items I have ever bought......I use it every single day without fail. If someone knocks at the door or phones me, I use the timeshift feature, I record everything to the hard drive and if I like it and want to keep it I will then tranfer these recording to ... ...I had a good sort through the hard drive and there was loads of things on there that I just cannot remembering recording, you can fit up to 198 hours of recording on the hard drive, but personally i opt for a recording setting with a slightly better quality and therefore I can now get in the region of 100 hours. but imagine how many vhs tapes would take !!!!

I purchased a LiteOn LVW-5045, I've found the menus easy to use. The only problem was that the fitted DVD Burner packed up after a couple of years, hadn't even played many DVD's on it and it was always very slow at recognising different media CD's , DVD's DVD RW's etc.
I pulled out the LG Lightscribe Dual Layer burner from my PC, and with a little bit of modification to a couple of the brackets inside the machine, managed to fit the replacement ...

This is a great product and a great price for what you get. Ive had no problems writing, recording or playing dvd/tv programs. It's packed with features and has got a large hard disc.
In the box it came with all the cables needed, no need to buy an extra scart. It also includes a DVD+RW disc. It's very easy to set up and has got a great and easy to use GUI (Graphical User Interface). You can also copy dvd's to the hard drive but you can't record ... ...can also put loads of mp3's on to the hard disk.
It writes discs at 4x speed, which it doesn't state in the manual or box. It also has a handy video editor so you can cut out annoying adverts in the middle of films. The quality is very poor if you want to fit 198 hours of video to the hard disk.
Overall, this is a great product and a good value for money. However not having a freeview tuner is a dissapointment and slow writing speeds. I think this ...
