4 Stars Formula; great. Packaging: misleading... Review with images 30/05/2012

Advantages Advantages The formula is great; fade resistant, shiny and leaves my hair soft.

Disadvantages Disadvantages (At least) Some of the L'Oreal hair dye boxes show unrealistic colour results.

This review is based around my My experience with using Recital Preference in Havana 6.35... *** This story begins after I'd stripped my fire truck red hair in preparation for trying L'Oreal Feria's new orange shade [Paprika Power] in March. As this shade is really light, I'd used two boxes of colour stripper over several days, then two boxes of bleach a few weeks after this, leaving me with a light, brassy blonde hue. However; after the unexpected death of my half-brother I found myself looking for a 'sensible' hair dye for the funeral, because his mother's side of the family are very ... more

5 Stars Luminous luxury for your hair. Review with images 03/04/2011
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Great colour and luminous shine.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little more time consuming to apply, but the results are worth it.

I have used many different branded hair dyes over the years, as colouring my hair is something I have been doing since my late teens. The only thing that has changed about colouring my hair is that when I was younger I coloured my hair for fun, but these days whilst I still enjoy the colour and shine that dying my hair brings, it is something I now have to do as a necessity as the grey hairs have began to appear. When colouring my hair, I look for a product which will cover greys whilst providing great colour and leaves my hair feeling soft and looking glossy. Out of all the brands I have ... more

5 Stars I'm no Cruella DeVille (or a skunk!) Review with images 08/07/2006

Advantages Advantages Cheaper than a salon for a professional look

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not cheaper if you stain everything else too!

MY HISTORY I spent a good 30 years of my life with mid brown hair with gold lights in it! "Ok so what's wrong with that?" I hear some of you muttering! Well I always wanted to have either blonde or black hair, not brown and MOST CERTAINLY not GREY! And I had started to get a patch of grey hair at my left temple, as well as scatterings here and there. I tried a blonde wig on to get an idea of how I might look, it made me look ill and didn't compliment my skin tone at all, which was very slightly olive/ tanned (not glowing or glistening or fair) so I tried a black one on and it looked really ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap and straightforward.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The smell.

Well, it's Saturday night, and it's the two hour window that I generally have pencilled in for planning for the week and marking books. So I've been bathing the dog and dyeing my hair, obviously (it should probably be noted that these activities did not take place simultaneously). For a long time I was very blonde indeed. Then I noticed that I was losing tons of hair on a daily basis and decided it must be all the bleach that was doing it. So I decided to be a brunette again. Initially I let the hairdresser have a bash at it, but two attempts (and much inane conversation) later the darker dye ... more

Advantages Advantages great colour, soft shiny hair

Disadvantages Disadvantages smells really bad, bit messy, ruins your towel!

I am writing this review, well the first part of it anyway, while waiting for my hair dye to develop. I never thought about dying my hair until a friend commented that with my pale skin dying my hair a shade of red would really suit me. I didn't want to go a bright coppery red though so I went down to boots to have a look at the sort of colours available. My first attempt was a bit bright and not really what I wanted, plus I didn't really like the dye as it was very runny and made a mess. I think it was garnier. Then I saw this dye and the colour on the box looked perfect so I thought I would ... more

Advantages Advantages Leaves hair shiny and beautiful colour

Disadvantages Disadvantages Makes hair fluffy, didn't actually dye my hair

Yet again that time has come where my blonde roots are showing and my dyed mahogany hair is beginning to fade. Yesterday I bought a box of L'Oreal Recital Preference in 'Palma Natural Brown' so that my hair will go dark brown and I can get highlights. USE As I open the box and tip out the contents I am pleased to see that they are still the same as they always have been. Just a big bottle of developer cream, a smaller bottle of colourant gel, gloves, instructions and shine conditioner...simple. I wet my hair because the dye requires that your hair is damp before applying. Mixing the product is ... more

Advantages Advantages excellent value for money, long lasting, simple to use, conditioning

Disadvantages Disadvantages just that it has to be applied to damp hair

I first went blonde when I was fifteen and have mainly stuck to various different shades of blonde every since. I used to use Colour Experte by L'Oreal, which was a two stage process - you dyed your hair an all over shade and then applied highlights to the top. I liked that because it gave me a more natural look than just flat colour. However, one day it just vanished! So I had to improvise by using two separate hair dyes - an all over dye, followed by a highlighter kit. In recent years, I have been using another L'oreal hair dye, Recital Preference, as my base colour. I do occasionally vary ... more

3 Stars RED AS A BEETROOT Review with images 13/09/2005

Advantages Advantages Vibrant colour, high shine

Disadvantages Disadvantages Messy ... very messy

I've been dying my hair on and off for the past 20 years. As a natural brunette, I'd always yearned to be blonde, but in my adolescent years and early twenties I wasn't brave enough to become a convert … I'm so glad I didn't. However, as a natural brunette when I was feeling bold, brash and confident I'd go for as red as I could get away with. In my thirties, when those stubborn grey (white) hairs started to appear I opted to settle down and died my hair "natural dark brown" from the Nice N Easy range of dyes. However, as the percentage of grey increases and I notice to my horror that my ... more

Advantages Advantages Vibrant colour, perfect grey coverage.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages the smell!

I've been colouring my hair for years and during that time it's been almost every colour you can think of, from black to blonde, and some fairly outlandish colours in between. I've tried all the different brands of home hair dye kits, and I used L'Oreal Recital years ago but until recently I hadn't used it for ages. The shade I chose was 6.66 Babylon which is a fiery red. I chose it because I loved the colour on the front of the pack and also this shade contains L'Oreal's "Anti-Fade" system which promises to deliver "up to 6 weeks of shine" and fade resistant colour. As anyone who has dyed ... more

Advantages Advantages Not as much irritation to my scalp as previous dyes

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unbearable strong smell, very messy and constantly drips, doesn't come out the correct colour

I have been using Herbal Essences Radiant Ruby for a while and have been very impressed with it. It doesn't drip, smells lovely and the result is decent. However, I wanted to try a brighter, bolder red, so I went on a hunt through the supermarket shelves... I came across Loreal Paris Recital Preference in an intense red colour. The hair on the front of the box looked a gorgeous red all over (instead of just being a brown that shines red in the light.) I looked on the back of the box at the colour chart and it said it'd come out a darker red for me. The picture wasn't much darker than the ... more
