I will graduate from Lancaster University in July, So I have decided to give this in-depth review for future 'potential' students. I know how hard it is to choose a University 3 years ago I was doing the same therefore I have separated this review into sections these are; Lancaster University (overview), Location, Transport, Collegiate system/Accommodation, Subjects, Lusu Union, International students, Student Services, Social life, Security, Great BONUSES they offer/Campus & Personal opinion. Advantages Advantages lots to see and do, Lake District just around the corner, steeped in history and culture, the teaching is of a high standard and it's not too hard to make friends

Disadvantages Disadvantages the campus can get claustrophobic, accomodation on campus isn't too great, students are loud - they keep you up all night, play loud music and drink alot (although depending on your mood - not always bad things)

Choosing where to go to university is a tricky business - unless of course you're a pre-destined Oxford/Cambridge applicant, or you have a line of predecessing sibblings/friends/lovers who have all studied at a particular institution and claim it is the best. However, for the rest of us slightly less fortunate beings, the choice is so vast, it can seem quite bewildering. When I was a spring chicken of a Sixth Former, I didn't have a clue. I visited numerous Open Days, marking ticks and crosses next to my list of must haves - top of the list being - is there a shop nearby that will provide me ... more

Advantages Advantages Academically good uni, close to Manchester and the sea

Disadvantages Disadvantages The sea is in Morecambe, and the nightlife isn't great

I recently had a message in my guestbook, asking about Lancaster Uni, so I figured I may as well write my next op on it! Lancaster Uni has a lot of pro's, and a lot of con's. I'll go through the pro's first, then go onto the bad side. And you can all make up your own minds! **PRO'S** Academicaly, this is a great uni. I features in most Uni Top 20 lists, and in a recent list in the Telegraph, it was ranked 12 in teaching quality. The Management School is reported to be the best in the country, but as I am a Women's Studies and Philosophy student, I couldn't really comment! The Theatre Studies ... more

Advantages Advantages Campus uni, college system, 8 bars on campus, 3 courses first year so can change courses if you make a mistake, academically excellent.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The weather... and there's no hope for that!

At school, I was always told that I should be aiming for a place at Oxford or Cambridge when it came to choosing a university. Now I had no idea what course I wanted to do, only that I wanted to get as far away as possible from my school and that there was no way I wanted to go somewhere that I imagined was anything like it (sorry to those of you who went to Oxbridge!). For some unknown reason, I ended up picking Lancaster University. I went to an open day there, and even though it was cold, wet and grey, I immediately felt at home. So I decided to spend the next three years of my life there ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent social life, 8 bars on campus!

Disadvantages Disadvantages 3 miles from town centre, compulsory 3 courses in first year

I had always wanted to go to Lancaster University, ever since my parents drove me round the campus when I was 13. First impressions were extremely good. A long widing road, with grass and trees on either side, takes you up to the campus and almost instantly one can see that students are set back from the town and its traffic. When I applied to take English Literature they wrote to me inviting me to an open day where I could meet my (maybe)future tutors and have a good look around the campus which included a peek at a 'typical' student bedroom. The day was very enjoyable and, unlike other ... more

Advantages Advantages Everything - a fantastic place to go to University

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not great for those who like big cities.

When I went to the visit day before I applied to UCAS I decided that I definitely wanted to be at Lancaster University. The place is set in an attractive location among hills, fields and a ring of trees. Everything is situated 'on campus'- and there are banks, shops and tons of places to eat (some of which open until 3am). You become a member of a college, and every first-year who has a place before clearing will have a room on campus. This is very reassuring to know, and puts you at the centre of everything during your first year. There are tons of computers, with free Internet access, and ... more

Advantages Advantages Campus Community and excellent Management School, rated third best in the country!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get a bit claustrophobic, the car parking facilities on campus are rubbish!!

Myself Im currently a third year at Lancaster Uni and studying Business Studies, so as you will guess I know quite a bit about the place! The main reason that I chose to go to Lancaster was the reputation of the management school. I was informed that it is thrid best in the country (with London School of Economics and UMIST holding 1st & 2nd place). When doing a degree these days I find it important that you got to a Uni that is somewhere that you not only like the feel of but also is one of the best places to do your course as these days there are lots and lots of people doing degrees and you ... more

Advantages Advantages Community feel, Lots of facilities, village feel to the city

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack of funding

Firstly Uni life is pretty much excellent for everyone, so I'll do away with the 'I had the best time of my life comments'. Of course I did, and so do the vast majority of students. But lets be objective about this... Lancaster University is a large college based university. It boasts what could be described as a fully self sufficient campus, in that there is a mid-sized Spar supermarket, Newsagents, Bakery(x2), Hair dressers, Natwest, Barclays, Travel agents, Waterstones, Student union run general shops (x2), and a plethora of fast food places - and yes nine bars. The college is about 2-3 ... more

Advantages Advantages Nice campas, Amazing sports

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too much concrete, too far from town, bad communication

When you apply through UCAS you have to choose 6 universities, mine are Durham, University of Wales, Nottingham, Lancaster, Newcastle and Reading. Basically I needed some back up and after visiting Lancaster, I liked the place, it was set on a campas, it had the different colleges, absolutely brillant sports facilities and everything you could ever want. The things that put me off really were, having to cook for myself in the first year, and having to travel from the campas to town and back at night and in the second year living so far from the lectures. The campas is nice, quite big, even has ... more

    Advantages Advantages too many

Disadvantages Disadvantages might not have your course (all I could think of putting)

I am not a student at Lancaster University but I have applied to go there for entry in 2001. So why I am writing an opinion on it then? Well after seeing the prospectus I decided that this was the place I wanted to go, however, not being too hasty I arranged for a guided tour, I had this tour on Wednesday December 6th. I was shown around the University by a current 3rd year student. He was helpful and explained all questions that I had. But what did I learn that earned this review for the Uni. Well Lancaster has 9 colleges. They are not strictly colleges in the sense that they are all ... more
