Landy, we love you

Advantages: load capacity, handling, visibility
Disadvantages: relatively thirsty, large turning circle

We all know that the Land Rover Defender is the ultimate utilitarian off-roader. But what's it like as an everyday road car? You have a large turning circle, but it's not as large as the Defender 110. The square corners mean you don't have to guess where the corners are, but it also makes the turning circle effectively larger. You have good visibility, over the roofs of the rest of the traffic. For best visibility have rear side windows. ...
...check the blind spot, and you have to be perfectly positioned when turning right onto a road in order to see all the traffic to your left. The big mirrors are also excellent, allowing you to see plenty of the road behind you. Combined with the straight sides you can easily see where your rear wheels are when reversing on a bend, and you can more easily line yourself up when passing parked cars. If you don't have power assisted steering, then ...

Yes that is how the advertising slogan goes and I am a veteran Landrover buyer and I still beleive that it is true. True the 90 has its foibles but as they all say this gives it a little character. It is rugged tough and yet sprightly, The Lawrence Dallaglio of motoring. Occaisionally it will let you down in a small way but an unexpected way, I recently went over a quarry and everything went well but two days later whilst reversing in my drive the ...

why buy a land rover defender 90?

Advantages: spacious, reliable, good handling, looks stunning, doesn't waste fuel and it's practicle.
Disadvantages: difficult to fit in small parking spaces.

...90, due to going to land rover shows and off road events with my father and i can quite honestly say it is one of the best cars in the world for: families, farmers, men, women, people living in a remote area, off road lovers, spaciousness, long distance expeditions and i could go on and on for hours. you may ask why buy this instead of a jeep, cherokee, toyota or any other 4x4, and the answer is land rover defenders are made to last, there are still ...
...legally. The defender 90 has better handling than the defender 110 but not as much space, the 90 is optimised to be quick and nimble but also tough, strong, reliable, practacle and as good off road as it is on road. you may ask "but why not buy a range rover, it is more modern, practacle and nicer to drive"? and my answer would be "because the range rover sport, vogue, hse, v8 and 2 door are all no where near as tough as the mighty defender 90 ...

Advantages: Comfortable, fairly quiet and it will go any-where
Disadvantages: Diesel = smelly !

I have been off-roading for a few years now, and I have to say that the Landrover Defender 90 is a truley remarkable vehicle to off-road. It has come a long way from the Series vehicles (even though, these are te orignal off-roaders). The driving position is well suited to the tsk in hand, and it was nice not to have the cab noise of a series IIA or III! The Defender pulled well thorugh the quagmire I was off-roading in, and I hardly lost traction ...

The Defender for off-road use

Advantages: THE BEST in off-road situations
Disadvantages: not as comfy as other 4x4's

...not without experience, having driven Land Rovers for the last 24 years. The Defender is not unstoppable but takes a hell of a lot to get it well and truly stuck. I am talking of real off road situations - deep mud, deep water, ruts, ditches, and tracks and fields not perhaps driven for years. This IS NOT a driving on the grass verge review. Given the correct tyres for the use, this vehicle with a tdi engine has an absolute immense amount of power ...
...are confidently driven by taking your feet off all the pedals and, in low ratio 1st gear, letting the vehicle do all the work. Steep uphill slopes can have the vehicle scrabbling for grip but it keeps going; you don't run 'out of steam' unless you are in the wrong gear. I have driven in water well over bonnet depth and had no problem whatsoever; yes the water comes inside the driver compartment, but opening the door afterwards soon dispels this. ...

Character

Advantages: Strength

Land Rover as a marque is an enigma. There are so many features of them that are inferior to the (mainly) Japanese equivalents, but they still lead their field. I am on my second Defender 90. Prior to them I had 2 Daihatsu Fourtraks. I am a farmer, so I am using these vehicles as workhorses. The Landrover is not so well appointed inside, having rubber mats and plastic seats in place of carpets and cloth seats. Much better for washing the thing out ...
...sheep. I haven't done this in a Land Rover. If you want a workhorse, then it has to be the Land Rover. If you want a 4FD that doesn't have to work, then go for something else. The one undefineable thing is that Land Rovers have character, everything else doesn't. ...

...this oldest design in the Land Rover stable. The Defender certainly has the history to make it a firm favourite in car lovers hearts but is it really any good? Yes. I've been running my Defender 90 now for some time. It's a 97 plate with 120,000 miles on the clock and has never let me down. It's load carrying ability is first rate, it's cheap to insure, it tows like a train and is a car so full of character you feel like it's a family member. Yes, ...
...away the guide book prices. Land ROver Defenders have a life of their own when it comes to pricing. The 300tdi models are still the most sought after off road vehicles around and as such command HUGE second hand prices. My 97 model is still worth £7k. How many ten year old cars with 120k on the clock can say that? If you need a rugged reliable workhorse, the Defender 90 should always be your first choice. If you go off roading, it should be your ...

I first bought a defender 3 years ago after my brother and cousin recemeded them as a useful car. The car it`self hasn`t changed much since the first world war when it was first made. The cars are still used by the army because of their durability and have been highly praised by a number of SAS vetrans. Landrover Defender 90

Advantages: Good utility vehicle
Disadvantages: Noisy, slow, expensive

We bought an 98 model about 2 years ago and its been relatively trouble free. A couple times sonn after we had it it broke down - this turned out to be a simple electric lead witch a dodgy connector. It can tow a half ton horse box with two half ton horses in it with ease. When you need to tow something heavy like especially up a muddy field it has the edge on almost any other vehicle bar a tractor. It's used for a daily drive to work as well ...

Disadvantages: bit slow for on road driving

...only one choice the great land rover defender 90. I bought it second hand and for the past year i have had no problems at all. I love the looks of the machine it looks rugged and hard. A bit blocky and unaerodynamic but when you are driving round a feild with a horsebox on the back this doesnt really matter. The ultimate hose-down workhorse.

Advantages: Excellent off-road, powerful, rugged, unpretentious and spacious.
Disadvantages: Poor on-road handling, expensive, slow, cumbersome and thirsty. Not a car for use in town.

The Land Rover Defender does what it is designed to do, which for some may be unhelpful. Essentially unchanged for decades, it could be argued that the Defender lacks the creature comforts which are expected today. The inside is basic. The newer post-facelift models benefit from the interior of a Transit, which is an improvement on the utilitarian aesthetics of the previous generation. However, it looses its hose-down ruggedness with more plastic ...
...room. For towing, the Land Rover is like no other. The diesel engines have enormous torque, and with a huge load going up a steep hill it is quite remarkable to feel the power of the engine. The Land Rover is prone to rusting around the sills of the windscreen and the bulkhead. This can usually be repaired, but if it gets too corroded and rotten, the bulkhead can be an MOT fail. One of the main problems with the Land Rover is that they are worth ...

Defender 90 Best Family Car

Advantages: High position on road, all round vision - safety and strength
Disadvantages: Not very speedy! Could do with more seats, I suppose!

Best car I have ever had - I don't want anything else! It goes anywhere, its easy and relatively cheap to fix. It is safe and secure and I can see other traffic and the roads really well. I am not dwarfed by lorries and don't feel intimadated by other traffic. Being square with good vision and power steering it is very easy to park (believe it or not - its true!). We have a little girl (now 3) and I have had this car since she was newborn. We put ...

Now I am expecting another one, so the seat is going back in again in the rear and No2 can sit there when we all go out together. Otherwise baby seat goes in the front and I have my two kids up front, safe and within easy reach. I can fit more or less anything in the back, ...

Advantages: A go anywhere vehicle, reliable, great fun!
Disadvantages: None!

I love my defender, I have owned landrovers for a number of years, mainly series 3`s, and have loved everyone of them! Great off-road ability - especially when dragging out the other so called "off roaders" (troopers, jeeps etc!!). Practical size, mines a 300 Tdi, and has no problem with pulling power! The best bit is when sat at the traffic lights next to the boy racers, and you can leave them standing in a cloud of smoke - imagine, being left behind ...

200tdi defender 90

Advantages: torque,ground clearance,easy to maintain

Brought my first 90 at 17 and now have my 2nd at 18. Ive got a 200tdi witch despite people thinking defenders are slow is not. Fuel pump has been tweaked along with the turbo, havent gone for a full width intercooler but still get 0-60 times of 11seconds, witch surprizes some little boy racers.
