Advantages: Feels safe, sturdy and comfortable to drive - handles well. Disadvantages: temperamental immobiliser, loud engine, noise from back wheels
...My husband spotted the Land Rover at our local car dealer and at £4995 seemed a good deal as an S Reg with only 40.000 miles. I loved the look of it, gleaming like new in a turquoise haze, and was eager to take it for a test drive.
That's when we realised how noisy the engine was. There was also a suspicious whirring sound coming from the back wheel on the passenger side. Despite our initial reservations we asked a friend who owns a garage to take ... ...one of these you get it checked. Mine has had its gaskett replaced for the same reason - this is fairly typical for this model - Land Rover know all about it and if you complain loud enough to them , they will fix it ie replace it . ...

I agree with Fast Freddie, on this...
I did a lot of research on the Freelander before I bought one, I went for a 1999 1.8 XEI 3 door hard top.
I paid 1350 for mine and have had it for 3 months now and done roughly 3000 miles.
My Freelander had no serivce history but was recently taxed, MOT'd and serviced at a local garage.
So far I have had very few faults, and those that I have had were rather uncostly and good on the wallet.
Tyres for 100 ... ...pounds.
A must for all owners in the Haynes manual, it helps with so many things, and I have been able to do a bit of DIY like replace the throttle body and the motor in the passenger side window.
You can write to the DVLA and for 5 pounds I think they will release details of previous owners, luckily I only had 2 and contacted them for details of which I did get.
In relation to other comments, The K series engine is actually a decent little engine, ...

When she makes her mind up she wants a particular motor, that's it.
We went to our local Range Rover dealer and within a short space of time the ink was dry on the Contract. No matter that I told the Salesman I was not buying the car, it was my partner, he kept looking at me when explaining the features and trying to get a decision. In the end I walked off and got a cup of coffee
We previously had a Renault Scienic which was a reasonable ...

Advantages: Excellent, unobstructed view for driver, spacey interior, useful wind-down back window, economical, great towing Disadvantages: loss of power up hills, can have mechanical problems
This vehicle is Great for a younger person, as it has a cheaper group for the insurance than most other 4x4's with it's 1.8 engine. With most other 4x4's having 2.0, 2.5 engines, I needed a 4 wheel drive but could not get/ afford the insurance with being just over 20 at the time.
This vehicle competes well against other 4x4's in aspects of: TOWING, using a horse box I moved home in 3 trips and having put all the white goods in one trip I didn't ... ...to tow horses up and down the windy highland roads.
It's ECONOMICAL petrol consumption. It is very SPACIOUS, I used my Freelander to move house filling it full to bursting and on the 400 + miles on country road and A roads it still managed an average of 37 to the gallon. This vehicle has exceptional performance in snow and ice,you do not even know it is slippy under foot till you get out and fall on your back side! This is due to the vehicle being ...

Advantages: All electric, landrover, good looking 4x4 Disadvantages: Thirsty, expensive to service
When I first got my Freelander special edition I was quite overwhelmed by the changes it made to my lifestyle. I was driving at a height that allowed much better road vision and presence(a great driving experience). The car has traction control/hilldescent and all the other electrics you could want. I was drawn to the Freelander because I wanted something that was goodlooking, functional in the area I live in and allowed me to go explore places like ... ...space for the driver and passengers I am quite tall and squeezing into a little hatchback was becoming tedious on a regular basis. The Freelander I chose was a special edition serengetti 1.8 twin cam and had some gorgeous Trek alloys different to the most popular ones which are nothing special in my eyes. It also has a nice patterned interior which is second to the leather with heated seats but it really is a nice modern cloth design and I would ...

...to this point i thought Land rover couldn't produce anything so useless, but i suppose thats what you get when you try to mix motor manufactures. If you've read this don't be put off, just look for the original Land rover Discovery range, they are excellent as are Range rovers and both are still being produced. If the Freelander was so good why are still making the Discovery?
Bottom line, It's your choice but i would DEFINITELY seek a test drive ...

I've had the freelander now for a year.
... ...for you, although it is quick off the mark in the low gears (only one gearbox so 1 & 2 are very low ratios ) it is slow to pick up once at speed.
Comfort is good but could be better, a trip to Devon from London (5 hrs+) is do-able in one go without having to stretch the legs
Visability is good for someone my height ( 5' 9") but at 6 foot you may start getting a bit close to the roof and have the top of the windscreen at eyelevel
The drive is smooth ...

I've had the Freelander 1.8i for nearly six years since new. Nice and comfortable for the first two years but then the problems started. At 50,000 miles the engine exploded. L/R after sales were unhelpful and I had to shell out for a new engine. As the years went on lots of little things saterted to go wrong and now I'm stuck with a pig that has cost me about 75% more than purchase price in repairs.
Engine is underpowered for the weight so it constantly ... ...expect.
The wheelbase is too small for the height of the car - so it can be unstable at speed or in high winds.
Overall, the Petrol models are poor value. If you are thinking of a freelander the diesels are far more reliable and better value. ...

with any car things go wrong, but i like the landrover. If youve got kids its great.plenty of room in the back for wee legs, so that kickin the back of your seat thing isnt a problem. it looks really smart, and if your on a budget and really want a 4*4 then its great. If u ski, it will take all your equipment and drive through the snow, great for towing. iv never had any problems with my freelander, and think its really comfy. petrol costs are ok ...

...I rather stupidly thought that land rover must have sorted this out by now and couldn't possibly sell me a car with an unresolved issue - I was wrong, a little over a month ago I had to have a new head gasket, the car was 2 1/2 years old and done 21000 miles.

I bought my Freelander three months ago because my husband wanted something to tow his trailer. Idrove the Mitsubishi Shogun short wheel base but felt it was too much a four wheel drive and didnt enjoy drivind it. I have read most of the Freelander reviews and there are some common themes that are rightly mentioned. The 1.8K series engine has problems and needs to be correctly and regularly serviced. The engine is also thirsty. There are also issues with the torque lock when turning or reversing at low speeds. Having said all of this I cannot ignore the mindless ranting that goes on simply because an owner has been unlucky for whatever reason and had to pay ... ...for a number of years. The car is comfortable, drives well and has plenty of power. It is well styled and has character unlike similar cars in the sector. Repairs can be expensive if you use a main dealer but who does unless the car is under warranty. Repairs at recomended alternatives are far cheaper and in line with other cars. I have seen comments like "had to pay £3500 for a new engine" I am sorry there are numerous specialist engine rebuilders ...
