Advantages: quite economcial, very comfortable, loaded with equipment Disadvantages: nothing yet
This is the first 4x4 I have owned. The other cars on my drive are Japanese import sports cars which are low and very very fast. This is to some extent the complete opposite but is a wonderful experience.
Our car was delivered in shining black with a black leather interior with .4 of a mile on the clock. Looks
The car looks bigger than it actually is. It has a strong resemblance to its Range Rover big brother. It is lengthwise about the same size ... ...But its height and rugged looks make it look a far bigger proposition though. The car has some tasteful silver coloured vents and trim which break up the all black look along with some tasty 19" alloys.
Interior
The interior is superb. Comfortable seats adjust to fit all sizes and have enough support to stop you getting back ache on long journeys something we were used to with our other cars. The trim on our model was a kind of brushed chrome as ...

...it apart from any other Land rover I have ever been in. I am disappointed to say however that this is all let down by the poor quality of materials used in the car. After only 2 1/2 years the paint on the grill covering the speakers started to rust and the paint fell of leaving a horrible mess. The chrome affect on the handles started to peel away, and left sharp burrs that cut my hand once or twice. I think that this car is a very modern and stylish ... ...for the fuel for the Land rover.
Over all I think that this is a well designed car that went 99% of the way but fell flat on its face at the final hurdle. If the quality of the interior was to be improved I would say this is a perfect example of what a 4x4 should be, but until then this just falls short for me. ...

Advantages: Diesel the most fuel efficient, best torque of the range, same motor as BMW 320d - so a QUIET diesel Disadvantages: Diesel may appear more expensive at the pump in the UK, dealer support is shoddy, maintenance costs high, still a british car with the usual quirks
Bought, drove and sold 3 Freelanders between 1998 and 2002. Started out with the 1.8 litre petrol, then the 2 litre Rover diesel, and finally the Td4 which is powered by the BMW 2 litre engine that won awards in the BMW 320d.
The Td4 was by far the best of the 3 that I owned. For one, by then, Landrover's build quality had improved drastically. By comparison, where the 1.8 litre spent 3 months in the workshop and the 2 litre Rover 6 weeks in the ... ...the period I owned it (12 months). Drove the Td4 on-road, off-road on rocky terrain, on the beach, and in muddy conditions. It performed much better than the 2 previous models I had owned for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Td4 delivers a lot more torque than the other two models - especially useful for overtaking, and for offroad 4x4-ing. Secondly, this particular one had 16" rims, so gave a little bit more ground clearance - most useful for offroading. ...

Advantages: Car like, comfortable motorway driving good compromise for 4x4 Disadvantages: not a serious off roader and still has reliability weaknesses
I bought a second hand commercial model of the Freelander that had previously been leased by an Orange telecom engineer. It had about 46,000 miles on the clock and was in good condition. The commercial version is a lowest specified standard 3 door freelander that has had the seats and windows removed and a proper loadbed installed. This is all done by Landrover Specialist Vehicles so is done very well. The commercail version has the advantage of ... ...by VAT registered organisations. My one also came with a rear window grill and bulkhead between the drivers cabin and the load bay which means that it looks quite secure.
I do a lot of motorway miles and find this a breeze to drive even on the 500 mile trips up to Scotland that I make, even after 8 hours I do not feel wrecked. If you cruised at around 80-85 MPH you would get about 32 to the gallon by my calculation. which is not quite as good as ...

i have found it hard to find a small 4 x 4 that is actually a capable off roader, with towing ability for my horse!
In the Freelander i have found a solution to my problem. Since driving a diesel engine Freelander all other small 4 x 4's seem to fade into insignificance. The Freelander XEDI is an all round excellent car. I have used mine off road in some pretty hairy conditions and it coped brilliantly in some very wet and deep mud. Also waded through a flood of over 2 foot deep with out any complaints.
On road, it's an excellent ride, in addition to having the flexibility of dropping seats to create a somewhat cavernous boot space.
The radio is something of a disappointment and I have changed mine for a SONY in ... ...interior is comfortable with lots of thought gone into personal storage in the form of little nets in the ceiling both front and back, deep front door pockets, and the best of all - a drivers side glove box.
Fuel economy in the diesel is excellent, we took a trip to France covering over 1500 miles and averaged about 36mpg. This is not too bad considering we paid a visit to a few vinyards along the way.
The Freelander is excellent for elederly relatives ...

Advantages: Off Road, Easy to drive, ENGINE Disadvantages: Service, Interior is boring,.
The Land Rover Freelander is one of Land Rovers most popular cars of the last few years, and its understandable for my experiences. It’s a 2005 “55” plate facelifted Freelander. In black, which is without doubt one of the best colours- along with silver.
My dad owned the TD4 Adventurer, but I drove it everywhere. It has a 1951CC Diesel Engine, which was virtually the same as you get in the 2.0D BMWs. Its an excellent engine, it pulls well upto 70mph ... ...fuel pump fitted correctly and Land Rover sent someone out the morning after, supplying a courtesy Discovery car as well. The car was taken for a service, around 8 months after purchase, where the mechanics “found” there was a leak on something and the intercooler needed servicing, however they didn’t realise it was still under warranty and tried to charge £500, Which they eventually did for nothing when they found out. But I doubt that if they realised ...

...a huge fan of the Land Rover marque. It is quite unlike other Landrovers and other vehicles in it's class. The handling has the secure feeling of a smaller car, but has the added benefit of a high driving position, allowing a greater view of the road ahead. I have found the TD4 diesel engine perfect for towing my large caravan. The torque levels are good making effortless work of muddy campsites, cruising at 60mph or winding mountain roads.
Without ... ...control and ABS work extremely well and inspire confidence. The hill descent control makes light work of tricky descents. Ground clearance is good enough for the capabilities of the vehicle, as long as your careful about deep ruts. If you want a vehicle suitable for more serious off roading buy a Defender, but the Freelander is more than adequate for light to moderate greenlaning. Generally comfort is excellent. I had a Freelander TD4 ES for 2 1/2 years, and had not a single days trouble with it. Since the ES came with leather seats, aircon and CD multi-changer, this made for a very nice period of deluxe and refined motoring.
Many of my friends thought that I would succumb to road rage through the lack of acceleration and top speed, but I actually found the reverse to be the case. Knowing that you were in a large, relatively slow car took away any of the ... ...and able to survey the road for miles ahead actually made for a relaxing drive. It is incredible how the frustration withers away when you can see what is causing the hold up, and you can take a good guess at how long you will be there. Turn up the aircon, choose a mellow tune, and chill....

I bought a Freelander TD4 - Serengeti - Automatic diesel from new in 2003. On October 9th 2007 - the car shuddered and lost power. I managed to get it onto the hard shoulder of the M25. This car has been nursed from new. Serviced regularly. My garage have just told me it needs a new engine. Unbelievable. I don't think I can recommend this car and if anyone knows of anything like this to anyone elses TD4 let me know. Thank you - I'm gutted. ...

Solid towbar mount means great for bike carriers and electric rear window and roof are great in the summer when driving along.

Despite what many people say about the reliability of the Freelander, i have never had any problems with it and i have had it for many years. There are many small problems such as when you go round a corner there is a lot of tyre squeel even if you are not going fast, and the habd brake is not the best, but ofer all it is a good car. With the backlash against 4x4 use in the urban environment, the Freelander has found a perfect niche.
It has enough off-road capability for all but the complete off-road nut, whilst not sticking out like a sore thumb in the urban environment.
