Insiders opinion of Freelanders

Advantages: Excellent TD4 engine, rugged good looks
Disadvantages: Poor 1.8i petrol engine

Firstly I would like to explain my situation, I currently work for a Landrover dealership in the Midlands, I work in the after sales side, therefore I am constantly in and out of Freelanders of all ages, models and engine options. The Freelander concept is basically a good one, the cars are designed as a road car which has excellent four wheel drive capabilities. these 4x4 features still make it the best in class. The build quality and engine reliability ...
...after car come in with the same problems, rear door seals, head gaskets and engines on the 1.8i, anti roll bar links etc etc, I am sure all the Freelander owners out there know what I am talking about. But despite all of these problems the cars are getting significantly better. The new 2002 my cars are released now and they are significantly improved on the previous efforts, predominately in my opinion, due to the involvement of Ford. The build quality ...

...right vehicle and buying the Land Rover Freelander 2.0D was the best thing we ever did! It has been 8 months since the purchase and no regrets so far. I honestly cannot find anything I would change about it. Taking into account I pay a lot less for my diesel here than in most countries, it is still very economical. Firstly, the Land Rover booklet from which we chose the car was very informative, full specifications, interior designs, wheel sizes ...

Freelander Commercial Diesel

Advantages: Great work horse with a cavernous back
Disadvantages: Poor visibility when reversing horse trailer - especially to the left.

I have owned my 2.0d x reg Freelander diesel Commercial (van jobber) for 2 years had 80,000 on the clock when i got it and now has over 100,000. It had rather a lot wrong with it when i got it, all the usual problems but as hubby is in the trade it wasnt to bad to fix her up and as she is a van she was pretty cheap to buy. I have 3 horses so this is my vehicle to cater for their needs. The permanent 4 wheel drive has got me out of some sticky situations ...
...shows, which in our climet are usually rainy and muddy and the Freelander tows through mud beatifully and I have never got stuck yet. Though visibility with the hardback with no windows can at times be tricky for reversing the trailer especially back to the left, but the wing mirrors are of a good size. Being a van the space in the back is cavenous just right for all the parifinalia i have to truck round, and I can get a fair amount of bales in ...

IT'S NOT THE BEST 4X4

Advantages: Still outselling any other 4x4
Disadvantages: Many.

Let me first say that I am reviewing this due to working first hand at a Landrover dealership and watching many freelanders, discovery's, and Range Rovers come flooding in with problems. I have never owned one and never will now but have seen, driven them many times through out my two years working at the dealership. I was the valeter there and would constantly have many opinions from customers and sales people. The Sales advisors would say to me ...
...and for the price bad workmanship. You might disagree but here are some of the reasons why I think they are rubbish Firstly, the 1.8 petrol freelander is awful. It drinks fuel and the engine lasts about 30,000 miles before a new one is needed. Ford really need to get there engine in because it is its biggest downfall at the moment (Ford have taken over Landrover in case you didn't know). The diesel however is much better. Also this make of car will ...

1998 2.0L Diesel Freelander.

Advantages: The earlier (non turbo) Diesel is willing and reliable.
Disadvantages: Although a little underpowered and can be expensive to service.

I bought my 8 year old Freelander 2.0 XEDi with 80,000 miles on the clock and a recently changed cam belt and can report trouble-free motoring. It was expensive (they hold their value) but I soon discovered that my car has an electric sunroof which never worked and remains permanently shut. I didn't check before purchase:-( , but A/C compenates nicely. Mechanically, the car was sound, although at last MOT (89K miles), I had to replace the rear trailing ...
...or 15% of the original sale price!! Apart from these high costs, the car has been reliable on the road and the Diesel engine is frugal, returning 38MPG average. There are little electrical bugs that plague the car, such as display backlights failing on the lower dash and the clock backlight no longer works. The heater also takes an age to warm the car up in the depths of winter. I have never taken it off road, so the HDC hasn't been tested by me. ...

Diesel Delight...

Advantages: Good all-rounder
Disadvantages: Jack of all trades, Master of none

The Freelander is quite a unique vehicle - a bit of everything, a jack of all trades - which works both for AND against it! I wanted a vehicle that would take me off road, but also cope with the masses of motorway miles I do, so its proved alright. The Discovery would have been my first choice but was simply out of the budget range. Japanese equivilents are just too tacky and not best suited for anything other than a grass verge! So the Freelander ...
...you're not in a rush to get anywhere, but it can be a pain in the .... I've had a few mods done now (chip, intercooler and suspension) which means the performance is ALOT better. I couldn't survivie without it. The petrol version is slightly better, but fuel economy of any sort doesn't exist! Off road: Everyone who sees it mudplugging initially laughs, but is gradually won round by the capabilities of the Freelander. OK, its not a pure off roader ...

Freelanders from the beginning. Early diesels.

Advantages: Brilliant at what it does
Disadvantages: Not cheap to run

I have owned two TDI freelanders for over 120,000 miles. I bought the first one March 1998. One of the very first. I have towed a caravan through deep mud and in snow. I have been traveling sideways in snow for fun and have driven around a tracked vehicle testing ground. My cars have been used to the limit including HDC in South Wales. The TDI Freelander is brilliant at what it does, though slow at motorway speeds. Its many anoying problems can get ...
...who says they get over 37 MPG is unwell and the drumming noise in the back is the rear tyre/road presentation problem wearing tyres to octagons. Back door seals, electric window cables, prop shaft suport bearings, steering pump, starter motor, wheel bearings, track rod ends, rear door handle failure, I could go on for weeks, but like I say, a brilliant vehicle. Love them or hate them, everyone should try one. I believe that if you can't afford to ...

Landrover Freelander

Advantages: Good all round
Disadvantages: Bad after sales service

I have owned this vehicle for over a year now and I have really tried and tested it, I have driven it too Bosnia 3 times over the Alps and everywhere. It has proved invaluable at times never letting me down, As a permanant 4 wheel drive it handles very well in all conditions. It also has the looks, sometimes getting you noticed by the wrong people as I found out when I recently came back from abroad into England only to be pounced on by the police ...

Land Rover Freelander 2.0 Diesel (2000)

Advantages: Excellent Interior Dimensions, Quality Built 4x4
Disadvantages: Very Noisy

The old style diesel Freelander I have found is an excellent 4x4. Its towing ability is stable, its reliable and comfortable. Fuel economy is about 45 mpg + on a run but drops slightly to 40+ commuting. Its roomy inside with a decent sized boot and has most of the mod cons on board that you are likely to find in most vehicles these days. At speeds over 60 mph I have found the road noise to be a problem, this is mainly due to its chunky all terrain ...
...made. There have been many reported manufacture problems with this vehicle but I have experienced none of these and dismiss all of the claims. Wheather I have been just lucky I dont know. Off road the vehicle handles well, the hill decent is an absolute god send for anyone atempting to go off road and is worth making sure that the one you buy has it. Ground clearance isn't fantastic but it copes quite well with light terrain. All in all anyone who ...

Freelander 3 door TD4

Advantages: Great all round work horse with plenty of space
Disadvantages: none that I have found yet

I have owned a 3 door TD4 for 2 years from new. It is great to drive in all weathers and a neat trick is being able to open the tail gate window and sunroof to get a through draft instead of putting on the A/C. However, one irritation is that the rear window can not be closed without the electrics on, but will open on the key remote control. (I am forever forgetting to close the rear window before I switch the engine off.) The Landrover dealership ...
...they are not cheap. The car is a work horse and is used for towing a trailer as well as taking the boys surfing. Up until last week it had been trouble free motoring but then the clutch hydraulics failed. Quickly fixed by the dealership but thank god I had Landrover recovery with the insurance. I hope that will be the only problem. The 3 door has an easily removable hard top that covers the back seat / boot. Great when the sun shines! The Soft Top ...
