~ ~ As a taxi driver here in Dublin I probably see more bad driving than most. On a daily basis I see other drivers doing the daftest of things on the road, and one of the commonest offences is simply failing to maintain proper lane discipline. (The other is tailgating, but that’s another opinion) ~ ~ I suppose that chopping and changing lanes in traffic is symptomatic of the hectic pace of modern living. Nowadays, everyone seems to be in such a dreadful hurry, whatever it is they are doing. Rush, rush, rush. Whether anything actually gets done any more quickly is another question. You ... more

Advantages Advantages Good lane discipline leads to less accidents and enjoyable journeys

Disadvantages Disadvantages Death, anger and stress are all caused by bad lane discipline

Driving should be a pleasent , relaxing and fun experience, after all, we are lucky enough in Britain to have some of the most beautiful scenery available, ranging from wide open spaces to beautiful hills and valleys. So why is it that as soon as we get in our cars and start a long journey , most likely on a motorway, or even a dual carriage way we immedeatley become different people. The importance of getting to your destination takes over, you couldnt care what the hills, valleys or fields look like as long as you can overtake everything and get where you are going faster and better than ... more

When I were a lad, lane discipline was what the sad old bag dished out down the lane at the back of the gassworks to our headmaster . . . Oh, sorry, I thought this was Friends Reunited for a minute. Lane Discipline. I read an op about this yesterday and found myself brimming with ire, so here goes. Trying to Mate *************** I travel on the A14 a lot. This is a long dual carriageway off the M1 into Cambridgeshire. The average traffic speed on this road, I would say, is around 80. There is one Camera before the A1 junction and the police seem to be scarce. Because there are only two lanes ... more

I ride a motorbike to and from work most of it is either down a dual carrageway or a motorway depending on my mood when I get out onto the road. I can see exactly the car drivers point and how frustrating lane hoggers are, on some occasions when I get up sufficiently early or the weather is bad I sometimes drive most of the time wishing I had taken the bike to work instead. The motorway is highly entertaining, I basically get a lane to my self, I know from car driving experience that at 8:30 in the morning the right hand lane travels at 70-80 mph with sudden braking down to 40-50 every mile or ... more

My blood starts to boil and I can feel my heart rate increase. My tolerance level is about to be breached and things could get dangerous. Road rage is becoming a reality for me.... .....what am I talking about? What is getting me so upset? Other drivers! No, I don't think that I have a god-given right to get from A to B in the shortest possible time with no hassle, neither do I think that my driving is any better than most people's but I do use the correct lane of the motorway! I used to make the 120 mile round trip to see my finance (now husband) every weekend (or thereabouts) a journey that ... more

What is the worst thing you can do to a driver? Answer at the end of this opinion! > - > - > - > - > > - > - > - > - > - > In the UK it is ‘The Law’ we drive on the left! We pass on the right (most of the time)! To drive on the left means that as drivers we should use the left hand lane on a multiple carriageway roads (dual carriageway, motorways ect.). These lanes are termed as, from left to right Lanes 1-2-3… so on, not left, centre, right. What does all this have to do with lane discipline? Not much, just to set the context because I feel the major problem with lane ... more

I loathe certain types of drivers with a zealous hatred I haven't felt since I first heard Country & Western music. I deal with these assh***s EVERY SINGLE DAY and they make me APOPLECTIC with rage. Lane discipline is just one of the many simple rules of motoring they can't or won't get their heads around. Here's my list of the things that make me go arrrrrgh! 1. Man With Hat We've all been stuck behind him, the elderly gent in the cap or panama tootling along in his Nissan Micra as if it's still 1932 and the roads are virtually clear and no one who actually has a life is behind him and ... more

Advantages Advantages Less traffic and accidents

Disadvantages Disadvantages Disadvantages of correct lane discipline?

This really is one thing on the road that drives me crazy. I may be young, I might drive a car that people consider too powerful for a 21 year old, but at least I know which lane I should be in. The sheer number of drivers, who I’m sure, consider themselves to be safe, that consistently drive in the wrong lane is worrying. We all sat our driving tests to pretty much the same standard, so why is it that so many people fail to observe lane disciplines? I’ll start off by describing what I think are the main situations where lane discipline is severely lacking and then what problems ... more

Having seen the discussions on speed limits I thought I'd open the debate up to include my personal bete noire - middle-lane drivers. Why is it that I have the sneaking suspicion that many of these individuals delude themselves into thinking that they are driving with maximum safety? Why do people even choose to hog the middle lane? I think there are a number of answers and not one of them provides an adequate excuse for this dangerous habit. "I'm driving at an average speed and the left lane's for slow drivers or lorries and the right-hand lane is for the fast drivers." "I don't like driving ... more

I have just returned from what was a pleasant day at work, (laughs and jokes in the office prior to my leaving), only to have my thoughts of my enjoyable evening ahead to be overshadowed with the anger I experienced from MIDDLE LANE DRIVERS!!!!! Aaaaggghhh!!!!!!!! I find it remarkable that each and every day I encounter so many drivers who do not seem to understand the simple rules of motorway driving. Surely when we all took our tests and read up on the Highway Code the hardest things to comprehend where the array of different shaped and coloured road signs - not the basic understanding of ... more
