Advantages Advantages A drowsy numbness pains my sense

    Disadvantages Disadvantages My heart aches

Sunday evening: back to work tomorrow after a week off. I need something to take the edge off the dread. In desperation, I seek out the ‘drinks cabinet’ – the clutch of dusty bottles on top of the fridge which include three types of whisky, no less. In order of fullness, there’s something with a dubiously fake Scottish name (possibly a Netto own-brand which might be Lithuanian rubbing alcohol mixed with gravy browning); a half full bottle of Grants, and a couple of drams at the bottom of a bottle of Laphroaig. I never buy whisky. Each of these bottles was a gift. And I only ever drink Scotch ... more

    Advantages Advantages Strong tastes

Disadvantages Disadvantages Medicine and coarse tastes in the 10-year

Scotch from the western Isles (as distinct from the Highlands and the Lowlands) tend to be lumped together geographically, and do share some of the same aspects, but are in fact rather unique. The Laphroaig (pronounced 'Laf-royg') in particular is an outstanding Scotch whisky. There are many who will drink no other, although others who will not touch the stuff. There is a distinct iodine-taste in this to some (and I must confess, I detect it myself) -- perhaps this helped its popularity during prohibition, as 'medicinal whisky' became a familiar taste. The distillery in located on a small bay ... more

    Advantages Advantages Tastes nice.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Tastes a bit like burning dirt.

Peat, dirt, call it what you will. You wouldn't immediately think it would work ("Well, it's tasty enough, Duncan, but what it needs is a little more.... soil.") in beverage form, but work it does, and wondrously. It's a whisky that isn't for mucking about with. It's a wintry old whisky. If you're in the malt game for firesides and labradors then I'd suggest you give your money to the Macallan people, who'll set you up a treat. On the other hand, if you're a roustabout, a salt-licked lighthouse-keeper, a trawlerman, a Caledonian oyster-digger or some similar brand of tough old bird, it's worth ... more

Advantages Advantages Taste, smoothness and quality.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing.

Since I recently wrote about one of my favourite malt whiskies I thought I would carry on, on that theme and write about another that is a huge favourite of mine. Laphroaig (pronounced La-froyg) is available in ten year old, 30 year old and 40 year old, each one is lovely but I am for now reviewing the ten year old version. From first glance at the plain looking green bottle that this comes in you could be forgiven for thinking what was inside would not be up to much but actually it is a very special malt whisky that has a super smooth and quite strong taste, somewhat woody and yet very ... more

Advantages Advantages Thick, rich, simple, incredible flavour, perfect!

Disadvantages Disadvantages I can't afford to drink it as often as I'd like!

...that title might make you think, ew, like...mud? Well, yeah. We'll get to that in a minute! But believe me, it's a good thing, to me at the very least! I've always been a fan of whiskey, generally. This might have come from wanting to be 'different' - I don't know, I've not come across too many whiskey-drinking girls myself, and, contrary to the myth, those of us that do like it for our tipple don't all have beards! - and to find something interesting to drink, it might actually also have something to do with my giving up beer and sticky alcopop things after putting on an horrific amount of ... more

    Advantages Advantages tasty

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

This is not a malt for the timid. It spends its long years in the barrel thrashed by the North Atlantic. Often, you will see the barrelmaster taming the barrels with a whip as they try to escape the rising tide. In this way, the whisky acquires a hint of the ocean, not least iodine, over time, and an angry temperament. In fact, the hint of iodine was enough to allow Laphroaig to evade prohibition when it was imported as a medicine and quite right too. I have found Laphroaig's medicinal powers to be quite outstanding. Ok, I confess, the sea-lashed bit isn't quite true. It is true that there is ... more

Advantages Advantages A big name must have something to be proud of

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for everybody

Laphroaig malt whiskies, same as most Isaly malts, are not for everybody! You may love it, or hate it. Most Islay malts are famous for pungent smell of seasalt and seaweed. In another words, it could be very "fishy" to you! If you are an islander or a fishing enthusiast, I am sure you will fall in love with Islay malt. If you think you will like Islay malt, Laphroaig is a must to try. Not just because of its reputation, but the uniquenss and surprise that will give you a life time memory. The typical Laphroaigs are the 10 Year Old and the 10 yo Cask Strength. The new trench in drinking single ... more

    Advantages Advantages Distinct flavour

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for someone new to Scotch

Distllled on the Isle of Islay in on the west coast of Scotlad this single malt whisky is available in 10 and 15 year old varieties. I must say, that I am perosnally not a big fan, as I prefer less smokey, pungent Scotches such as Aucantoshan or Oban, however Laphroig if a good scotch if one is in the mood for something a little distintive that isn't sweet. When tasting Laphroig you can't immediately tell it is from Islay, as it has a very peaty taste, caused by the high concentation of peat in the soil. As well as peat, I find that Laphroig gives subtle notes of smoke as well as some sweeter ... more

1 Star Quick review of Laphroaig Malt Whisky by JanBod 02/11/2008
From my first sip I was captivated by the distinctive taste of Laphroaig 10 year single malt. So much so that I was disappointed by the 15 year old as it's greater mellow taste has lost some of the remarkable characteristics opf the 10 year old. It is with an increasing feeling of dread, therefore, to discover in my last two purchases of the 10 year old that the whisky is losing its' peaty, iodine-like taste. Am I alone in this? Have I bought two dud bottles? In disgust I have recently bought the cask strength Laphroaig. Stronger than the b10 ... more

    Advantages Advantages Excellent..

Disadvantages Disadvantages It should last longer ...

This is truly wonderful stuff, probably amongst the very best single malt Scotland has to offer. The 10 year old is my personal favourite as I feel the more aged ones are somewhat overly refined and maybe lose that lip-smacking Islay iodine goodness which makes every hair on your body turn to goose-bumps. The best way to have it is utterly sober on one small piece of ice in a chilled crystal glass. The only downside I feel is that the whisky is particularly susceptible to diminishing marginal utility from the first sip onwards. The nose which is exceedingly exquisite does not totally match the ... more
