There's so much more to lavender than you think!

Advantages: Has multiple uses around the home, smells lovely
Disadvantages: Can attract bees (which isn't that bad!)

...and opt for just growing lavender for its look and scent in the garden, and do not realise how easily it can be used inside the house, and indeed, for how many purposes. As this review is in the 'garden' section of Ciao, I feel I must start off with this side of things first. Indeed, there is no chicken-or-egg question when it comes to lavender - I suppose one must start off by growing it before using it! Lavender in general ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lavender ...
...different species can vary. Lavender in the garden ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I grew my first lavender plant when my dad agreed to let me have a corner of the garden when I was about 17. Not really knowing what I was doing from a gardening perspective, I decided on lavender just because I knew what it was and thought it smelled nice! I bought a fairly large plant (about 30cm across) and at the time it cost me about £8 (that was 5 or 6 years ago) from my ...

Lavender in my English country garden

Advantages: Look and smell lovely. Insects are attracted to the flowers
Disadvantages: Don't last for ever

Lavender is a quintessential English country garden shrub. In our ever increasing warmer and dryer climes they are probably going to thrive even better over the coming years than the other traditional plants such as hollyhocks, honeysuckle, rose or delphiniums. Lavender looks good, smells lovely and has many practical uses. Indeed lavenders have been recorded in this country since the Roman times. They are a very versatile plant, valued for their ...
...Growing ☼ Lavender can be grown from seed but they are not very easy; the seeds germinate slowly and they are not guaranteed to come up true to the parent plant, so in effect you could get any colour flower. They are readily available at most garden centres where you can buy a very small plant for not much more than a couple of pounds or a more substantial plant for ten pounds or more. In my opinion it is far better to buy a small plant and ...

Well, If it's good enough for Jesus!

Advantages: Lovely fragrance, attractive, useful
Disadvantages: -

Lavender is one of those herbs you see in so many gardens – Many people grow it because it looks nice, has a distinctive scent, and because it attracts bees and butterflies to a garden. It’s the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of the herb family – as well as being decorative and highly scented, its also useful in cosmetics, rituals, cooking, and cleaning – In fact pretty much everything! Lavender ~~~~~~~ Lavender, or Lavendula, commonly grown in the UK nowadays, ...
...and the Romans bathed in lavender scented water and it was from the Latin word "lavo" meaning "to wash" that the herb took its name. Lavender is a member of the Lamiacaea family of plants – a family that also houses mint, thyme, rosemary, and many other herbs .Plants from this family have a bit of a reputation for being bullies in the garden, taking over all available space and seeding themselves al over the place . Lavender is no exception – while ...

lovely lavender. some info on how to use too

Advantages: smells great, and works for period pain too
Disadvantages: do not use in the 1st 3 months of pregnancy

Lavender As im sure everyone knows, lavender has been used for centuries in the perfume industry, with its sweet smelling aroma with woody undertones its just perfect. Although it has many other uses too, from treating depression to pain relief, and as a bug repellent. As a plant, I have seen lavender used to create a boarder in much the same way as a hedgerow is used. And I must say that it looks stunning when it is in full bloom. And the smell ...

The gorgeous scent and colour of lavender remind me of holidays in the South of France! ...Lavender is less hardly than its English counterpart, but has gorgeous butterfly type flowers. French lavender likes to be in full sun with well-drained soil. I grow mine in a large pot on my sunny patio. If you grow your lavender in a container then you will need to water it. You must also ensure the pot is large enough as lavender has long roots. English lavender is much more hardy than the French variety and once established will need little ...

...wash. I smelt some lavender yesterday and thought ahhhhhh Lavender I have not written an opinion on you yet. So I have settled down to write one. Lavender is an herb I have strong childhood memories of. When it had dried and the flowers fell of the stalks, my mother would sew little bags and we would stuff them with lavender. Some of these bags she would give as gifts, some she would put in every drawer that contained clothes, towels or bedding. As a young girl I was a girl guide I have memories of bob a jobbing. ...saturation of today’s market with lavender this and lavender that, it really is a beautiful and fragrant plant to have in the garden regardless of whether you use it for any purpose other than to give your senses of sight and smell an occasional treat. Growing Lavender is a Snap

Advantages: Easy to grow, heavenly scent
Disadvantages: Hard to grow from seed

...tried for years to grow lavender from seed, with no success. Finally, I broke down this year and bought a 1-gallon plant. It was one of the best investments I've made for my herb garden! My French Lavender is still blooming, while many of my other herbs stopped when the fall nights turned cold, here in the high desert of Northern Nevada. My tomatoes may have given up their last fruit, but my lavender is still going strong. This wonderfully fragrant ...
...Lavender is a graceful perennial shrub, native to the Mediterranean. It usually grows about 2 to 3 feet high, and does best in dry, well-drained soil. Its gray-green leaves are slender and elongated, covered with fine, downy hairs. Both the leaves and flowers give off a delicate, sweet scent. In the Middle Ages, the herb was strewn about towns to mask the scent of smelly streets. (They didn't have indoor plumbing back then.) It was also strewn indoors ...

A granny of a plant

Advantages: Fragrant , easy to grow , attracts butterflies , can be cut and used
Disadvantages: Can attract too many bees and wasps .

Most of us recall Lavender as an old ladies and old fashioned perfume . You would probably be surprised to learn it still appears in masses of modern perfumes , toiletries and cleaning products . It is still a useful and lovely plant and has many uses . It is also very decorative . Having had to venture into the garden this week to assess the storm damage to our fence , and garden I thought I'd have a general tidy round . Looking at the now huge ...

There is a lavender in the front and the back garden , both of a similar type . The one in the front however has much deeper purple flowers ...

Lavender - The All Round Plant

Advantages: Aroma, evergreen, easy to propagate
Disadvantages: Can grow woody, doesn't like 'wet feet'

Lavender is one of my favourite plants to use in the garden. I think it is a shame the beautiful aroma of this plant has been labeled as an 'old woman' smell! I may have turned 50 this year but I'm no fogey and am here to stand up for lavender! The shrub can be quite woody with long, slim fragrant leaves densely growing from ...

Lavandula angustifolia - this is another variety with silver foliage and it is low growing so is excellent for the edge of borders where you want some definition. Lavandula stoechas - this is commonly known as French lavender and has very dark purple flower spikes. ...

dwarf lavender great for small gardens

Advantages: smell and look great
Disadvantages: nothing

Lavender (Lavendula)is a great aromatic shrub and there are varieties suitable for most gardens. Small gardens where space is at a premium like mine benefit from dwarf varieties.
