Advantages Advantages Free books, try new authors

Disadvantages Disadvantages You can't keep the stock, funding cuts, library fines

Have you been into a public library recently? If so, what did you borrow? What services do you use? If not, you should try putting your head round the door to see what’s on offer. You might be pleasantly surprised. I base the observations below on my experiences as a holder of 4 library cards for the last few years – London is divided for local government purposes into 32 boroughs which each have their own system – I have cards for the area I work in (the nearest branch is actually in the same building as my office – a great perk for me), the area I used to work in and where my boyfriend now ... more

5 Stars We've got a Ticket to Read.... Review with images 16/06/2005

Advantages Advantages Lots on offer....much more than you think!

Disadvantages Disadvantages People still have a view of libraries as quiet and boring.

Those of you who have read a few of my reviews will probably know I work in a library. Libraries are important to me ~ not just because they pay my wages but because I love books and also like to share this love with others. I don't claim to know everything about Library Services but I think, after over ten years in the business, I have some knowledge to impart about this very important public service. From being a little girl I apparently always wanted to work in a library. My mum likes to tell people (don't they just LOVE to tell others such things) how I had a little ink pad, stamps and ... more

Having been stuck at 39 ops for so long and not finding anything I was sufficiently enamoured with, or hated enough to find worthy of an opinion, I was in despair. Wracked my brains, till the lightbulb flashed and I thought of my one true love. I love books. Have done for as long as I can remember and am one of those saddos who get really excited by the prospect of entering a bookshop, like a kid in a sweetshop. Books from floor to ceiling is my idea of heaven and I think my dream job would be as a librarian, where I could caress books all day long. Then again, having looked at the librarians ... more

What a marvelous resource public libraries are, all those books that you can borrow for free! I've grown up with libraries as a big part of my life. My Mum is an avid reader, who goes through about 10 books a week so as long as I can remember Saturday mornings have involved trips round various libraries. Some of my regular readers may be surprised at this as one of the few areas which I have yet to write an opinion in is the book category (unless you count Delia Smith). ~~~ My Mum & The Library ~~~ I think that dear old Mum would be lost without the library, it would cost her a fortune to buy ... more

She gripped her fathers hand tightly as they approached the building for the first time, slightly nervous at the sight of it with its wooden shutters and darkened windows. It wasn't a particularly large building, standing only one story high but to a small child it looked huge and unwelcoming. She noticed the wood first, so much wood, this wasn't a brick building like her own house, more like a large barn surrounded by a walkway, itself edged by wooden railings. This was definitely an old building she thought, probably even older then her father. As they walked through the door she had to wait ... more

In recent months I have been carrying out a fairly major piece of research work. I thought it would be useful to spend some time in a local library to help with this project. I currently live in Kirkham in Lancashire and work in nearby Preston, and moved here four years ago from the Midlands so I asked around at work to see where the best local library was, and got told to try the Harris Library in the middle of Preston. It's based in the Harris Museum and I didn't have any money for parking on the day I went to join, so I parked about five minutes away on a side street which cost me nothing ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages have to be careful that your kids don't scribble all over them

I have never been one for buying new books. I am a fairly quick reader and finish a longish novel in a few days (well, I used to before I discovered this site!) so I figure buying book after book, especially hard back ones, was a waste of money. I do confess to having bought a few from charity shops, but at 10p a copy, you can't go wrong. We were about to go on holiday to Spain earlier this year and I was doing my packing a few days before with my husband. I say with my husband - he was in the room watching TV and adding the odd comment like "have you packed me a towel"! He suddenly piped up ... more

I am here to defend the local library. Is there any need for the local library? Yes, there definitely is. At every stage of my life so far, I have needed the library. I have loved books since childhood, and although many of you will laugh at this, a trip to the library as a small child was a treat. I loved going. I loved the quietness, the smell, browsing the shelves and then proudly handing my choice to the librarian, who back in the day always seemed to be an older lady, usually with scant smiles for a small child cluttering up her nice tidy library. I loved choosing something different for ... more

There are quite a few reviews of libraries in general on here, and nobody can say that free books aren't a good thing, but I thought I would review my local library since I am not happy with them at the moment. Haha. --Disclaimer-- Since it's in writers' corner, I'm trusting you'll take into the account that I'm simply writing a rant and I don't expect anyone to know where Lichfied is ;) -------------------- Firstly, I love books. I usually like to buy them though because that means if I like them a lot, I can keep them to read again. Also, it takes me a while to read things so, adding this to ... more

I ought to declare my interest by mentioning that I started my career as a trainee in a public library before going to library school, and then became a full-time library assistant at a further education college. Now I work part-time, combining my job with that of an author and freelance journalist (for the love of it, not the financial rewards, such as they are!) who does a large amount of research on the internet. So not only am I touch biased, but I feel I can look at libraries, their value and usefulness in the 21st century, from several angles. Libraries, particularly public (which are ... more
