Advantages Advantages They're the best kept secret in town!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't use my beloved credit card.

"Did you say Lidl -I wouldn’t be seen dead in the place!" I've found that's a typical reaction whenever the "L" word is mentioned in the company of the non-cognoscenti. I counter that this Company (and a couple of their Continent inspired cousins) is a retail phenomena that even the most cynical can't afford to ignore for much longer. Then I go on some. To confess, I'm an "outed" Lidl fanatic! We're talking shopping here. Basic shopping. That's something that The Bride, in her wisdom, entrusts to me, her retired and consequently humbled servant. By basic, read washing powder, bleach, bin ... more

    Advantages Advantages Value for money

Disadvantages Disadvantages Paying for carrier bags

I had never been into a Lidl store before, up until a few weeks ago. I pass one every day on my way to work and just recently we have been receiving leaflets full of vouchers and offers currently on in the store. These make great reading whilst eating breakfast! I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about. I have always thought of Lidl as being a cheap and cheerful supermarket, and that's exactly what it is, even the sign above the door looks cheap, blue, yellow and red showing just the word Lidl. Lidl stores always seem to have a good sized car park without the potholes and rubbish ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages pay for bag's, untidy stores

I bet for many of you on here, when you hear the name ‘Lidl’ think cheap food, bad quality, for poor people, and until recently I would have fully agreed with you. My opinion of the German supermarket lidl has never been very high and as an influential teenager I would have never been caught dead in my local branch. My first experience of Lidl was in 1995 when a new store opened in Frome, Somerset. My parents were never poor but we loved a bargain and Lidl’s looked like the place we would get this. I wasn’t very impressed initially as I could see no big names like ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap and cheerful, easy parking

Disadvantages Disadvantages Mainly own branded goods

LIDL SUPERMARKET. Lidl, a 'low price' supermarket has two branches in my area, a town centre shop and an out of town superstore. The company began in the UK back in the mid 1990's and now has several hundred stores across the country. The Lidl concept is a 'stack 'em high, sell 'em low' one. The shops tend to be rather warehouse-like with goods stacked high either side of the aisles. The Lidl logo is a little wacky, a yellow banner with the name in blue, apart from the ' I' which is offset and red. The store's motto is 'Where Quality is Cheaper' Most of the Lidl own brand goods seem to ... more

Advantages Advantages Great prices, most food is good

Disadvantages Disadvantages limited range, shabby store

We all hate spending our hard earned cash on boring things like groceries so we are all trying to save money by buying bargains and trying budget stores. Leading the way in this revolution are the German owned chains such as Aldi, Netto and Lidl. I am used to this style of supermarket as my parents often shop at the Aldi in Dumfries and the food is just as good as branded stuff! When Lidl opened a store on Stockport Road in Longsight Manchester I felt I had to see if Lidl was as good as Aldi! Lidl is a German owned store who first arrived in Britain in 1994 and now has over 330 branches in ... more

Advantages Advantages Some goods can be cheap, especially the veg

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can often be over-priced, have to pay for a carruer bag.

Back in 1994 there were rumours of a new phenomenon flying around the country. Tales of a new supermarket originally from Germany that offered extremely low prices and was rumoured to have the like of Asda and Tescos quaking in their cut price boots. They were a novelty, you could wander in and look at these strange jars of pickled vegetables long before there were Polish supermarkets. Long before the Poundlands they were stocking strange generic health and beauty products such as 'Washyourhair' or 'Stinkysmells' for men. A couple of years ago people went potty for a Lidls moisturiser that was ... more

Advantages Advantages great prices and no frills

    Disadvantages Disadvantages some unknown brands

In this current climate of feeling the pinch we are told that people are abandoning their preferences for brands and going for cheaper options. No retailer embodies this trend more than Lidl. If you have time, and we seldom do, as we all work 60+ hours a week and tend to try to get the shopping done in a single visit once a month, it is nice to cherry pick the best deals from a variety of shops. We have recently returned from a fortnight's break in Cornwall, spent in a delightful holiday cottage near Penzance and whilst there we tried some of the alternatives offered by the Lidl store in ... more

About six or seven years ago, I heard about Lidl, people were saying how it was a stack them high sell them cheap, totally different from the supermarkets I had been used to. Well I ventured in to have a look. I remember the prices were cheap, tinned food at 5p, 6p. That impressed me, I bought a small selection, mainly because I had never heard of any of the brand names. Over the next few days my thought of saving money by venturing into Lidl and buying loads of their products waned. To be honest none of the tinned foods that I tried really stood up and said “I AM TASTY”, there was nothing ... more

Advantages Advantages Very functional, great value, lovely chocolate

Disadvantages Disadvantages Limited range of items

Our Germanic friends have invaded these shores with various no-frills, budget-tastic supermarkets. One of these, Lidl, sprouted a brand new branch near me so I decided to investigate it after getting fatigued with the usual fare from Tesco. This was a good move as after visiting Lidl a few times I really enjoyed it as an alternative to the mainstream run of supermarkets. In my opinion Lidl has seemed to have achieved its low cost status by cutting costs to the core as I witnessed : Low staffing levels – they always seem to be busy in a number of roles going from stacking shelves one minute to ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap and surprisingly cheerful!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No baskets

I used to live in London and we were surrounded by supermarkets and food shops: Tesco, Sainsbury, Safeway, Waitrose, M&S - you name them; we had them. Our nearest supermarket was Lidl. I only ever went there on about two or three occasions. It was awful! It was a fairly new store but seemed so run-down and badly managed that the times I didshop there I left feeling depressed. OK, so it was cheap - but it was definitely not cheerful! These days I live on the west coast of Scotland, we have a Tesco, a Co-op - and a newly-opened branch of Lidl. When word first got out that “some funny sounding ... more
