Advantages: Fast, easy to configure, reasonable price for a Wireless Access Point Disadvantages: slight snag in set up. Easily resolved
My dearly beloved Linksys WAP11b passed on this week. At the request of the family there were no flowers but a small celebration was held to remember a long and hard working life and the opportunity to get a new one. Including VAT and delivery, for £48.15 , Novatech.co.uk sent me one of these little charmers. Let me explain my home setup:

The ADSL line starts at my phone line and passes through a Linksys ADSL ethernet ... ...the FAQ section of the Linksys website (Now you see why I like to have all the units separate) and I found the cause.
They mention that some cordless phones use the same 2.4 Ghz radio frequency as the WAP and to try changing the channel. Advantages: easy to set up, good range. Disadvantages: a bit sensitive
...almost anything you like! The Linksys website is also excellent, with lots of helpful information, and a regular supply of official firmware updates.
actually configuring it can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it, but I would suggest taking the time to learn about wireless security and to implement some using the wap54, I would also urge anyone out there to make the SSID of the signal customised to you (this makes it less hackable) ... ...to something custom - again for security
except for the debacle with the cordless phones, this unit has been faultless and i am going to get another one to use at home!
expect to pay £35-£45 from most online retailers, and up to £55 on the high st. ...

Advantages: Cheap, instalation, WPA Disadvantages: Plastic, some config settings, Reliablity
...the WAP54G and being from Linksys meant it was also from Cisco and you can not get a Cisco wireless Access point for under £50 so I went for it.
The Specifications of the Linksys Had everything that I needed
B+G compatible in the 2.4 frequency category
Security includes 256 encryption, WEP, WPA, WPA -RADIUS So with this I went off to work on installing it.
Firstly I would like to say what a user friendly set up this Access Point (AP) has all ... ...port with a normal network cable run the CD, Run the set up Utility where it will auto detect the AP.
From there change the IP address to a static and of course give the AP a SSID (name).
And your more or less done. With this AP you get to use the far superior WPA-PSK which again is very easy to use with the Set up program so when it comes to ease of setting up this AP has top marks without sacrificing ease for security.
