The Lonely Planet guide was less preachy, better written and altogether a better buy, even fitting better into my backpack. The content was very accurate, the town and city maps generally clearly than Let's Go, and although it has to bee selective, there was a better selection of place in the Lonely ...

Advantages: clearly laid out, a good read Disadvantages: Bulky and focused mainly on popular destinations
The lonely planet book of Eastern Europe is big, but for the sheer amount of information it contains it has to be. I used it for Croatia,Slovenia,Hungary,Poland,Slovakia and the Czech Republic and for these countries it was certainly helpful. The brief country history makes for a good read on long train journeys and the maps proved indispensable when arriving late at night when the tourist information office was closed. Also included with the book ... ...welcoming if you attempt to learn their language even if you fail miserably! Lonely Planet is a definite must for any backpacker at least until you get your bearings. However i hardly referred to it for places to eat or stay preferring to use my own initiative and friend's recommendations. ...
