Affairs of automobile compartment Lotus in the beginning of 90th years when it was developed Elise, went completely not excellent. By then in Norfolk two models - by road of super penalties Lotus Esprit and appeared in 1989 Lotus Elan with four-cylinder turbo motor Isuzu, the first in a history of the company 1 the automobile were issued. But Elan, despite of warm reception of press, "has not gone", and it have removed from manufacture. The companies were necessary the new automobile - original and rather inexpensive, designed in the best British racing traditions. With small-displacement ... more

Advantages Advantages Best drivers car on the road for under 30 grand

Disadvantages Disadvantages Real pain in the proverbial to get in and out of

The closest thing you'll get to a road legal go-cart! Lovely lovely lovely car, unfortunately it is absolutely impossible to get into if you'r over midget height! The point is this, the door sill is 20 cm off the ground, the roof is at 50cm....get the point, climbing into this car with the roof on you need to be like Bo and Luke Duke, this is a seriously small car. That being said! My colleague bought one of these at the weekend and we tok it out for a spin at lunchtime (with the top off!) i'm pretty tall but you do sit quite snugly, there is a great place to put your fags on the dash...which ... more

Advantages Advantages It's a Lotus, looks amazing, is a true drivers car

Disadvantages Disadvantages They had to help Vauxhall build the bar of soap. No creature comforts. Has Lotus really sorted out the reliability probs and build quality???

The new Elise took everyone by surprise when it came out, so soon after the VX220. As I first clambered into the drivers seat, there was nothing vastly different from the old Elise. However their was a weird sensation that this car had grown up. I have experienced the old Elise on the Silverstone race track, where I could use the car to its full potential. It seems that Lotus have taken a look at the Germans for build quality, it actually feels very well built! The switch gear, which is borrowed from GM again, feels good to touch, and the main buttons are neatly stacked up on the left side of ... more

Advantages Advantages Priced well, great sports all-round.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not really a 'super-car' and becoming quite commonplace.

This car was released to critical acclaim some few years back, with the Lotus' chairman's niece, funnily enough named 'Elise', sitting in the car. Having driven one of these, I can honestly say I was impressed. The car is basic inside, no doubt, but this is a sports car! The floor is bare, you'll be sitting so low you'll think you're on the ground, but the drive is truly breathtaking. Whilst not what I'd call 'super-quick', that in itself depends on your point of view; I found cornering in this car very easy. It is responsive and sharp; a real quality drive. It's quite small, too, both in ... more

Advantages Advantages Superlative driving pleasure and economical to run

    Disadvantages Disadvantages High visibility

My pleasure in owning and driving this car continues. As they say in the papers, your heart does quicken whenever you get in the seat. It would not be everybody's idea of practicality, but I use it on a weekly basis. In terms of reliability there have been no problems, except when I left the lights on (Duooghh)at a Club Lotus track day of all places. It has been recalled twice for little bits of work, once for a heat shield, not that there were any problems with mine. My only irritation is that screws which hold the rear number plate lights, the petrol filler tube and windscreen wiper all rust ... more

Advantages Advantages the best drivers car on the road

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none, zilch, squat

I own a 2004 model year 111s. The interior is much improved over previous years with an easier hood that stows nicely in the boot and leather seats with lumbar support. Carpets and CD Radio are standard with the S model. However, you dont buy this car for comfort and luxury, even though they are a nice addition in this case. You buy it for the lotus tweaked k series, variable valve timed 1.8 Rover engine which generates 160bhp. (This is about 210bhp per tonne by my reckoning.)This free revving throaty engine is married to a chassis and suspension created by the very best in the business. Half ... more

    Advantages Advantages Handling

Disadvantages Disadvantages everything else (the unimportant stuff)

You can forgive the slightly overdone styling. You can forgive the fact that theres no radio. You can forgive the ludicrous hood. You can forgive the fact that you know it'll break down. You can forgive the fact that you probably won't walk out of a smash with an artic. Because the handling is so fantastic. You have, I promise, never felt anything like a corner in an elise. It turns so quickly, so sharply, with such... feedback from the wheel that you break out into a grin that pokes out of both the windows. Its only got a 1.8 litre engine, but its enough, becaus ethe elise weighs so little ... more

4 Stars Quick review of Lotus Elise 111S by reviewer93 04/01/2008
Lotus have deffinetly got the knack off design good looking cars! The Lotus Elise fells like a GO-Kart when you drive it becausie of the suspension and the fact the it is much lower than your every day Ford. Is not a partiullary practical as a family car, hence its only 2 seats. But you will be gaurenteed to have much fun in this car. Every year Lotus are imrpoving the interior and looks. This model looks has the sport body, convertible. Downside it is a petrol, which will cost more at the pumps.

Advantages Advantages Look sexy and great to drive

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very small for a big guy

The lotus elise, I absolutely love the look of the car, to me it is one the sexiest sportiest shapes on the road, plus its a bit of a bargain. With second hand elises coming down to around £15k for a 96P its a pretty good buy and you can be confident the residual values will be good. Now, I have test driven the elise twice, the first time I took it out I had an awful test drive in the rush-hour through a built up area. Definitely not the best way to find out about a sports car! Unfortunately this test drive really put me off the car. The main reason being that the brakes are not servo assisted ... more

Advantages Advantages Slick, cheap, great to drive

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Impractical

Having recently been lucky enough to drive a Lotus Elise, I would like to stake its claim as the best car of any type on the market. It has so much going for it- the only disadvantage is that it's not very practical if you have a family! These Elise is genius in terms of design. Because it's stuck together with epoxy glue rather than weighty nuts and bolts, the chassis is very light. This means the Elise does not need power steering or ABS. Consequentially it is not too pricey. The fact that it is light also keeps the cost of fuel consumption down and means that a 1.8l engine is sufficient ... more
