Battenburg Cake What Is Battenburg Cake Battenburg is a delicious light sponge cake which is basically a cross - cut cake shaped like a window and can also be called a window cake , where one part of the bottom half of the window is pink and the other part of the window on the lower half is yellow. On the top half of the window , there is exactly the opposite way of the colours bieng presented. So the yellow and pink makes a neat patern. The covering on the outside of the cake is a almond flavoured delicious icing. The energy and fat measurements are all split into one eighth of he cake. The ... more

Now it is fair to say I like a nice cake, indeed there is yet to be a cake invented that I did not like, and top of my list has to be the delectable and eye catching Battenberg, pink and yellow sponge squares glued together with apricot jam to produce a chequerboard effect and encased in marzipan, pure heaven in cake form. Before we get to the fabled taste test I feel a little history lesson is called for, after all a cake does not end up looking like the Battenberg for no reason. Popular belief has it that the four quarters of sponge honour the four Battenberg princes, Louis, Alexander, Henry ... more

Advantages Advantages Lyons make great cakes

Disadvantages Disadvantages I don't like marzipan!

I was just mooching around in Ciao this morning doing some reading and rating when I happened upon the food section, and more specifically the cakes. Now I do like a nice piece of cake and I tend not to be too fussy – if it’s got lots of calories it’s OK by me! There is, however, one cake I can’t stand and that’s Battenberg – I can’t be doing with marzipan you see. It is one of dad’s favourites so I do still buy it even though I don’t personally indulge. I have even had a go at making it for him too, and it wasn’t a bad effort even if I do say so myself. Most of the supermarkets do their ... more

There are so many different types of cakes in our supermarkets, but most of us buy them for convenience, rather than bake our own. I suppose its down to the fact that most women just don’t have the time to bake, because of work commitments.I only work part-time so I like to make my own, but there is one cake that I regularly purchase, as I just can’t make it taste as good. This wonderful tasty delight is called Battenberg. Lyons who has been making cakes since 1908 and is one of the most popular brands around today makes it. Some of you will may be not of heard of this great cake ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lots Of Sugar And calories

I do sometimes enjoy a piece of cake every now and then but I am quite fussy when it comes to deciding what I like. One cake I do love however, and one that is a firm favourite from being a kid is a piece of Battenburg Cake. In my opinion a successful cake has to not only taste good but it also has to look good. It has to be distinctively different enough so that it is instantly recognisable and when it comes to cakes few are as distinctive as a Battenburg with its pink and yellow squares encased within a thick wrap of marzipan. However just in case there are some of you who are unfamiliar ... more

The Review.................... There is nothing I like more, than a nice cup of tea at elevenses and a nice bit of cake to help the tea along. One of my particular favourites is Lyons Battenberg Cake. The attracting colours always drew me in as a child and I have never looked back. The name of Battenberg is taken from the German Royal Family back at the beginning of the 19th centaury. The squares that make up the cake are said to be representative of the four Battenberg princes. I got this particular cake from my local spar shop for £1.25p, but these are so common nearly everywhere has them ... more

My waist gives away the fact that I do have a sweet tooth. Strange fact though I don't take sugar in my hot drinks. Most of the time when I want a cake, it will be a swiss roll, normally half in one go, never do you find me slicing it all neatly. The only exception is Battenberg, this probably is a throwback to my childhood, then this was a posh cake as far as I was concerned, I don't know why I think of it like this, it might be the fact it only was ever eaten on good china on a Sunday evening, all neatly sliced into thin slices, served like a colourful pack of cards. As a young lad, I would ... more

As most of you will probably already know I'm rather partial to a biscuit, so it will come as no surprise that I am in fact pretty keen on cakes too. I like most cakes as I do biscuit, fresh cream ones are very nice indeed but don't last very long. So what does one buy when one wants Good Cake at a reasonable price and that wont all be gone after the first cuppa. There are obviously a few cakes that fall into this category, but I'm going for Battenburg. My main reason apart from absolutely adoring it, is that it keeps pretty well. Just wrap it in a piece of cling film and it will keep for ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Weigh in on Wednesday

Maybe the sheer fact that I have woke up this morning and had batten berg cake for breakfast shows just how delicious it is or that I really do deserve my weight problem. I have only come across these cakes in the last year or so and to be honest I wished I had not. If cakes were judged on their appearance then this cake would be your “Cindy Crawford” of cakes. I think it is great to look at. It is a square sponge divided into 4 smaller squares that are pink and cream. It is then wrapped in cream coloured marzipan and it just is a pretty cake. But as everyone says looks are not everything so ... more

    Advantages Advantages sugary and yummy

Disadvantages Disadvantages I refuse to acknowledge any.

It's a simple enough idea, the battenburg cake but there's something strangely compelling about it that can turn the most sensible of people into ravening nutters as they fight over the last piece. What you get: a rectangular cake, nestling on a bit of cardboard and covered in thin plastic - not much to throw away as you can recycle the card, I'll give them a thumbs up for that. The cake is made of sponge - a light, moist sponge that is moderatly sweet and won't fall apart as you try to eat it. The sponge is yellow and pink (probably unpleasant colourings, but I refuse to look, I like it too ... more
