The Rise AND Rise of MAPLIN

Advantages: Huge stock range covering most electronic/techncial fields
Disadvantages: Not all prices as low as elsewhere.

A long while ago, my High St. used to have a Tandy shop. By a tortuous route, our local branch became a Jessops Photographic store, which in itself was no bad thing – you get a bit tired of Dixons being the only place you can buy a camera! Firstly, Carphone Warehouse, who had bought the Tandy name in the UK, decided to phase out certain branches in favour of Tecno, a photographic chain, and our local branch followed this sequence. No sooner had I ...
...out the extended warranty, than I got a letter from Jessops, telling me that they had bought Tecno’s interests and assets for Carphone Warehouse, and in future, the Hounslow branch would be a Jessops. I THOUGHT THIS WAS ABOUT MAPLIN Calm down, calm down, la’, I know it’s a long preamble to an opinion on Maplin, but bear with me, there’s a point. I always felt comfortable knowing there was a Tandy shop around – not that I ever bought much there (no-one ...

What a little treasure trove, and CHEAP

Advantages: Massive range, Cheap, Good staff
Disadvantages: Charge for a catalogue, Not many branches

I feel like I've just come out of Aladdin's cave, juts come out of a store that is a real treasure trove for anyone wanting to buy electrical and computer components. Forget going to PC World or Dixons with their extravagant prices and rather dodgy service, try Maplin Electronics. Before you think they are a very specialist shop selling complicated bits of equipment for building things from scratch, STOP! They are much more than that. I've been in ...
...and they sell a massive range of items, 18,000 components and products in fact! They sell all sorts of things, and not just components. If you need a new keyboard or mouse for your computer, give them a go as they have a good range, reasonably priced. They sell printers, scanners, PDA's, DVD-drives, modems, web-cams, graphics cards, zip drives, hard drives, speakers, microphones, headphones, joysticks, the list goes on and on, and that's just in ...

Just about anything - as long as it has wires!

Advantages: Almost everything you woule ever want electrically
Disadvantages: Can get busy, obsure items not always in stock

I've been a Maplin customer for around 30 years - and whilst that probably doesn't qualify me for a long service award, I'm probably as well qualified as anybody to express an opinion on the company. I first encountered Maplin as a twelve year old when I joined the radio Club at my high school. In those days, there were two kinds of radio shops - the high street shop, where you bought finished goods, and the back street version, where you could ...
...Brown's Wireless on George IV bridge, and Millars in Leith Walk. Both were run by elderly gentlemen who wore full length brown 'machine shop' coats with rubber buttons. Both were magical places in which you could buy any component from any radio manufactured within the past 60 years. Both shops were fitted out with glass topped mahogany counters, the walls were lined with little boxes, each containing incredibly obscure components - you stood in ...

Fix it yourself and save loads

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: none

...at repairing stuff yourself, then Maplins is the best store you`ll find to help you. They first started as a mail order company in 1972, then moved on to open their first shop in 1974. They are a bit like Tandy, but sell a much wider range of products. Whether you`re an expert in repairing particular electrical appliances, or just enjoy fiddling about with a screwdriver, then you`ll find all the books and electrical components you`ll need here. ...
...can buy these bulbs from maplins for 49p, and it`s just a matter of taking out the old one and soldering in the new one. It will literally take you two minutes, but a video repair shop will charge you about £50 to this. The second thing you should know, and most of you will have already done this, is never use a video head cleaning tape. These will actually cause more damage to your video in the long run. They don`t remove the dirt from the video ...

Refund - not on your nelly

Advantages: none so far
Disadvantages: try and get a refund and you'll see

A new Maplins electronics store opened in Hereford and as I was to go wireless in my home, I went in to have a look at their range of products. I have BT broadband and with this I got a free wireless Netgear modem, this was for my own computer, my partners laptop and my daughters laptop, so I ended up buying three net gear wireless adapters from Maplins. There cost me £19.99 for the wireless card adapters, I bought two and a n adapter which fitted ...
...when I really saw how Maplins worked. I entered the shop and asked the young man at the desk for a refund, he looked at me for a few minutes then said, I'll get someone for you then walked off. A few minutes later an older man came out of the back and asked what was wrong with the items. I told him that we couldn't all connect to the internet at once and he said it was my modem. I explained that the modem was working properly and that the adapters ...

Five star service

Advantages: Good range of electrical products at cheap prices.Better service than Dixons and PC world
Disadvantages: Plain wrappers give a lack of quality feel.

Ive used Maplins before for small things like ariel leads, torches and components for electronic projects in my school years (Dad dont even say that was years ago...I know!!). Yesterday was the first time I had been in the shop in a while.I was looking for a cable to connect my new CD RW to my CD player and then on to my motherboard.I picked up the wrong one not knowing it, at the check out the young gentleman kindly asked what it was for. I wrongly thought that the young gentleman would have the same knowledge as those robots at Dixons and PC World and was worried that I would have to make a second trip. Im glad to say, thanks to this gentlemans kind offer of a simply question saved me from having to make a trip back to the shop. I had a look around in the ...

Just what I've been looking for...

Advantages: Wide range of stock. Knowledgeable staff.
Disadvantages: None really

I've been going into Maplins for a few years, in fact, since I first learnt of its existence here in Leicester. I have always used it for leads and cables and other bits and pieces that nowhere else seems to have. I always seem to find what I am looking for in here. And no matter what others might say, I've always found the price to be fairly decent, at least compared to what some of the other people around here charge. I've also found them to ...
...actually happens. God bless Maplins for actually employing people who know what they are talking about. My latest purchase from the has been a nice new scanner which cost me £50. I bought it today, and it's waiting to be tested tomorrow, so expect an op on that. The reason that I bought the scanner from Maplin rather than anyone else is that I needed one that used the Parallel Port rather than USB (I have a rather old PC you see). I'd looked all ...

Like toys r us for adults

Advantages: cheap quick helpfull
Disadvantages: none

I first discovered Maplins when my fiance bought home a copy of their catalogue which he had paid £3.99 for. I don't normally like paying for catalogues as the way I see it it is like paying to watch adverts - not something you would choose to do! However it is a huge catalogue (over 1000 pages)that contains everything electrical that you would probably ever need. The catalogue is divided into seven colour caded sections for ease of finding the item ...
...five ways to buy from Maplins - by phone (national rate), fax, mail, in person, or through their website @ www.maplin.co.uk. The web address and phone number are advertised throughout the catalogue, and there are several order forms included to make your life easier. The website is straightforward and simple to use. When you place your first order you are given a customer number and PIN code for placing further orders so that you do not have to ...

Maplins - Buyer Beware

Advantages: Helpful staff, one in most cities.
Disadvantages: could cost you a lot of money and time if things go wrong.

...machine unusable. I contacted Maplins customer service by e-mail and were very nice, they told me to take the parts into the local shop and they said they would send them to the workshop for investigation - sounds good. I removed the motherboard and fan and took them to the shop. After a couple of weeks I received a phone call from the shop the workshop had asked for the receipt when I bought the fan, I keep all my receipts except this one so it ...
...avail. I decided to settle for cutting my losses as losing the receipt was indeed my fault. I called into the shop, collected my bits and left without a smile. After reading the “engineers” report, which read, “the fan in question had nothing to do with the motherboard socket breaking and is indicative of faulty fitting”. RUBBISH! As a qualified PC engineer I have fitted hundreds of fans and never known this to happen. Point one - There is no way ...

Maplins good and bad

Advantages: cheaper than pc World
Disadvantages: dont do computer software and returns needs looking at

...we decided to go to Maplins and to compare their prices with P C World as they are next to each other in one of our out of town shopping areas. Maplins is wonderful for "boys toys". On entering the shop you will almost certainly be met with a sales assistant giving you their this months sales offer pamphlet. The store is well set out and everything is in sections such as audio, computer, toys, electronics, hi fi and tools etc. Everything is well ...
...that most items that both Maplins and P C World stock were cheaper at Maplins. The staff, if you find the right one, are very helpful although there is a good shortage of Sunday staff. The returns section though is disappointing. We bought a Mother board but it turned out to be faulty. We had bought it more that 14 days before we discovered this fault. Because we did not return it within 14 days they had to send it back to their head quarters ...

Top Gizmo Sellers

Advantages: Comprehensive site, easy to use and order.
Disadvantages: Not always the cheapest

Maplins is a well-known chain of electrical component retailers with branches across the country, and a mail order service. They also have a decent website, but the URL is perhaps not what you would expect: https://catalogue.maplin.co.uk/ Here you will find an online version of the company's CD-ROM, and you can place orders online. I wanted a new gizmo - a lead which would connect my new telephone (see telephonesonline.co.uk) to my minidisc player/recorder. ...

Outstanding Customer Service

Advantages: Huge range of items, at a reasonable price
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest, but more than made up with good service

...the gadgets I wanted in Maplins in one visti (they have a huge range) I also went to Staples, Currys and Comet. The latter three stores ALL had surly staff, and particularly in Staples one staff member audibly sighed and tutted when I asked her politely to demonstrate an LCD monitor....she then tried to make me feel bad for asking this, saying "there ARE other customers in the store sir"....but there were only TWO customers there! In complete contrast ...
...helpful, and, miracle of miracles, actually knew about the items in the store and had clearly been thoroughly trained in their jobs. This is a rarity nowadays. Most large stores have staff who not only have no clue whatsoever about the products they are selling but often given erroneous advice about them. Again, in complete contrast, the Maplin staff knew exactly what they were talking about. Many, many superstores, amongst which: Tesco, Currys, ...

Quick review of MAPLINS - ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS

Try getting them to own up when you shop online with them and they send you incorrect incomplete orders.I spent £120 with them.the order was short by £8.50 worth of goods.I emailed them several times to tell them but they ignored me each time. All you get back from them is an auto response telling to they will reply to you in 5 working days, they never do.Your only choice is to put in for a chargeback on your card but you may not get it as you will have already signed for the package with the missing items in it.I suppose i should count myself lucky they only did me out of £8.50 and not £50 or £100. ...

Price rage

Advantages: Staff Knowledge and Service
Disadvantages: Price

I use a Maplin store on occasions to buy specialist equipment as there are not many offline stores available for emergency parts. My experience with maplin is that they are over priced as their is little competition. Many other similar suppliers like Radio Spares (RS), Farnell and Texas Instruments have much lower prices and a much wider range. However they do not sell to the general public so good contacts in a college or industry is useful. As ...
...ago a 20" NEI television was priced at £350. I bought it from Powerhouse for just £150 less than half the price! My advice is if you are thinking of buying from here, look around first. The availabilty of component data sheets is very restricted, if at all. On the bright side, the staff are knowledgable and can be very helpful. It's also good for the odd bargin when the sales come, but there again, so is everywhere else. ...
