Advantages: High credit limit, low monthy payment Disadvantages: poor customer service, difficult to get through to phone lines
I have been with MBNA for the past 6 months and whilst the Visa card itself has had its benefits my main gripe with the company is that they are always so difficult to get in touch with via the 24 hour phone line.
Hold times are excessive and staff are often straight to the point and not overly helpful. Also within the 6 months I have been with them I have had three calls from them to try and encourage me to purchase their card protection scheme ... ...was my first month with MBNA and about 3 days before my first payment was due I realised that I hadn't recieved my monthly statement. I called them to query this and they said they would send me a statement so that I could pay the amount asap. They said that no charge for late payment would not be charged since it was not my fault that the statement had not been sent. However, when I recieved my statement (a week later) I had been charged a late ...

Advantages: charity donations, no annual fee Disadvantages: terrible service, hard-sell of cover, don't let you leave easily
I obtained an MBNA "New Hall" card in August 1999, because it would mean my college got a small percentage of everything I spent on it. When they were running the credit check on me they claimed they couldn't find me on the electoral register - in fact they couldn't find my college, even though there are 400+ students put on the electoral roll there each year. They also did a very hard-sell on the payment protection which I gave into. After a few ... ...it. They didn't make that easy, I had to be put through to a different department who quizzed me about giving it up and tried more hard-sell.
The initial credit limit they gave me was very stingy - £500. My montly spend was rarely that much but sometimes I would need to buy a lot of things between getting the bill and the payment deadline. I would go over the limit by say, £100 because of this timing problem. The card wouldn't be stopped, but I ...

Advantages: Excellent Customer Service, Good rates of Interest. Disadvantages: Wouldent like to have to pay one of their late payment charges!
Ive had an MBNA Credit Card for around two years now and just wanted to say how please I were with the service. I dont actually ever remember filling out an application form or enqiuring about getting an MBNA card, one just turned up in the post one day. I think I may have went to a concert down in London, had a few beers on the way down and got collered by someone trying to flog them at the area! Before that I had never heard of them!
Whenever ... ...which really impressed me with MBNA were that around 6 months ago I moved house and were late with one of the payments due to the move. I had a letter from MBNA saying I would be charged a fairly high amount due to the late payment, so I phoned up the MBNA customer services, explained the situation and they were more than helpful and completely cancelled the late payment charge! I were very happy and they were very reasonable. The only disadvantage ...

Advantages: Decent Apr Discretion to waive late payment fees High credit limits Disadvantages: Large late payment fees No telephone payment service
On the whole MBNA provide a fairly decent VISA card service. The apr is competitive, there are no annual fees and have given me the largest credit limit of any of my other cards.
However I do have an issue with their late payment charges. If you make your payment even one day late then an £18 penalty is imposed automatically. I understand this may be common practice in the industry but its a bit steep.
If you do get hit unexpectedly with this charge ... ...them. Granted you may be on hold for ages, as MBNA's 24 hour helpline is constantly jammed, but its worth it if the £18 fee can be waived.
I managed to get the fee refunded on 2 occasions, once when I had simply forgotten and spoke nicely to the person on the other end of the phone and another time when a balance transfer from another bank had let me down.
So although its nasty if you do get the late payment charge, do not just accept it. It pays ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: Watch out for the interest rates
I've had my MBNA card now for some 4 years, always been a good boy, paid on time, never exceeded my limit and more often than not, settled my account in full each month.
Looking around at the cheapest way of borrowing, I decided to use my card to make a quite expensive purchase - after all, I would have the flexibility of making lump sum payments, as well as the minimum payment - and as I said, the rate was favourable compared to other loan packages ... ...you like - I tend to think otherwise, but shortly after making the purchase, I received a letter from the company outlining increased interest charges on my account. Just to rub salt into the wounds, I picked up on a newspaper advert for the same company offering absurdly low rates on cards for customers. Needless to say, in the (very) small print they wrote in the clause advising that this rate would not apply to exisiting cardholders who might ...

...most months, as a result MBNA have raised my limit pretty often - again, this is nice.
Then, after having lots of offeres for low rates etc from other companies I phoned MBNA and asked if, as a good customer, they would offer me anything to stay with them. On the spot, over the phone, they agreed to extend the low rate for another six months.
I have had to contact MBNA a few times, once over a late payment charge (which, admittedly was my fault) ...

Advantages: Help pay your internet charges Disadvantages: High interest if not paid in full
This card is ideal for anyone who uses A.O.L. as their internet service provider. On approval you get a free gift(mine was an Olympus APS camera)and 2500 reward points which can then be exchanged for one month's subscription to A.O.L. (currently worth £15.99).For every £1 spent at the usual visa merchants you get 1 point. When paying your subscription through the card you get double points. As soon as you accumulate another 2500 points they can be ... ...and exceeding the credit limit(£20 each)but this can be overcome by setting up a direct debit for either full or minimum payment & you can access your account at any time at keyword:aolcreditcards where you can see your current month's spending up to date & also the last six statements if required.
Another great advantage is that, unlike many card issuers all the telephone numbers are 0800(free) and if calling from abroad charges can be reversed. ...

The MBNA co-branded card looked a good option when compared to other cards available at the time I was applying. However I now wish I had choosen the competition.
Since having the MBNA card I have had nothing but irritation from the bank. On such time was when on holiday in the Carribean. I needed to use the card as I had lost some money but the limit had been reached. So I called the bank several times to ask them to increase the limit on my account. ... ...a week a letter from MBNA offering me an increase in my credit limit by £1000! Thanks.
Despite this I continued to use the card, however on now numerous occasions I have had to argue with MBNA staff to get problems on my card resolved, especially the £15 charge for a late payment, when the balance on the card was £1.58.
So overall the advise I would give to all who are considering applying for an MBNA card is stay away, you have been warned. ...

...which saves you 2%.
MBNA give high credit limits as well which can be a plus or minus depending on how you look at it.
The only downside i have is the interest rates which are 16.9% for purchases and 22.9% on cash transactions which are a bit higher than some of the competitors.
Other charges include £25 for going overlimit or making late payments.
Overall i would recommend this card to anyone who tends to pay off there balance each month. ...

Advantages: Efficient Disadvantages: High interest rate
I've had a MBNA branded credit card for at least two years. It arrived promptly after I applied for it, has always been billed accurately and on time, and they've given me a generous credit limit (£7k).
They do have a very poor interest rate. There are some many cards out there which can be readily obtained with rates less than 3%, which makes their 4.9% looks very unattractive.
A great bug bear, now that I've got used to being able to check balances ...

Advantages: Good Interest Rates, good promo rate Disadvantages: Late Payment charge is a bit lousy
The MBNA card I think is a competitive card and I think that it is hard to beat - well that is my opinion. I have had another card before I got my MBNA one and the MBNA proved to be lot better in categories of better promotional rate, longer promotional period and competitive rate after promotional period. The promotional period I got on this card was 6 months at a rate of 0% for both purchases and transfers, so for 6 months I could put onto this ... ...£18. You can contact MBNA customer services and explain your situation, it is at the operator's discretion whether you will be let away with it. So if you talk nice to them then you might get the opportunity of getting this fee took off your account. The late payment charge is the only problem I have with this card though a late payment charge is common with most credit card companies. Other than this samll mishap I think that the card offers plently ...

...leflet about their company branded MBNA credit cards. I was using another Visa card at the time, which was a no frills type of thing. Use it to pay, pay off your balance, start again.
I read the leaflet and was quite suprised to find some of the benefits offered by using the card. 1.5% "cashback" in the form of TC pounds redeemable aginst holidays booked with TC and an addtional 0.5%(up tp £1000 spent) to 1% (over £1000 spent) extra cashback if ... ...credit transfers, travel insurance (by MBNA not TC), internet protection, purchase protection etc.,
As I pay my balance off in full each month I do not fall foul of charges so I do not know about the downside in this respect. Advantages: charity donation as you spend Disadvantages: interest rate ?
I have had my MBNA Gold World Wildlife card for about 4 years. There is no annual charge. The service from MBNA has been very good, and its great knowing that each time I use my card, a small donation is made to WWF too. Many retailers have commented on the attractiveness of the card - it has a beautiful tiger picture. As I always pay my balance in full each month, I cannot comment on MBNA's interest rate.
The freephone service is excellent - I ...

Getting an MBNA credit card was the worst investment descion I have ever made. I initally applied for their card because they offered an intial low rate of 9% for 6 months and becasue they offered a credit card cheque book, meaning that you could give anyone a cheque who cannot process credit card transactions.
