...is my review on an MG ZS 1.8 120
After having just got rid of my last car (VW Golf GT TDI) I decided it was time to get back in the MG Rover scene and to do just that I started my 4th car search. I eventually fell upon MG cars just because they had a sportier look and appeal. I was really drawn to the ZS but found they were a little pricy for me. After having just bought a VW Golf and spending a lot on it trying to make it good and selling it for ... ...a big bite. 2002 MG ZS 1.8 120, Lemans Green, 53,000 miles and recently serviced including timing belt and head gasket repair. I really liked the colour which I thought looked fantastic and very different. I bought it and brought it home that day.
The car
What I had just bought was a 2002 MG ZS 1.8 120 finished in Lemans Green with just 53,000 miles on the clock. What I liked was it had just been fully serviced with head gasket repair and timing ...

Advantages: Stylish looks, superb handling, excellent price Disadvantages: Nowhere near as quick as the ZS 180!
...I looked at both the MG ZR and ZS, having a family I needed 4 doors and a bit of space, despite a fantastic performance this really ruled out the smaller sports hatch ZR. So the ZS it was. I organised a test drive and found the performance of the ZS 120 equally as good as the ZR I had test-drove, this brought a smile to my face!
So how did it perform? The instant thing you notice in the ZS is the incredible road handling, it seems that you can take ... ...45 hatchback.
For any MG enthusiasts, Rover has given a great deal of thought to this car, reinstating the wire grill and ensuring the car delivers on handling. The one thing the motor press picked up on was the apparent dated interior, for me personally I think the interior fits nicely with the car and none of my passengers have complained!
All in all the MG ZS offers a sensible family car yet delivers with it some fun for the individual who enjoys ...

Quick review of MG ZS
MG ZS 180 Saloon.
Other reviewees have pointed out the great handling and road holding that this car has, good looks etc etc. Tacky interiors etc etc. I concur with them all... What nobobdy has mentioned (probably cos they dont really know) is the crash worthyness of this car. Mine was new in 2002 and on the 8th May 07 a freelander pulled out in front of me when I was doing around 60mph.
I hit the Freelander which pushed me sideways into the side of an aggregates type truck, that then pushed me into the hedgerow, all in the space of 2.5 secs or so. My pride & joy was written off, but i got out completely unscathed. Awesome car & i really miss it already. ...

Advantages: The grin factor, performance Disadvantages: Watch interior build quality
For. The grin factor, performance and the badge to go with it not to mention touring car prestige!
Against. Interior fittings don’t always fit as good as they should
Value. This car has got to be one of the best on the market in terms of value. I don’t think that there is much out there that can match it or the same money. Whips the competitors asses!!
Costs. Not too bad at all. Fuel economy is pretty good, especially on the two diesel ... ...worry as long as you shop around a bit. Dealer servicing can be a bit expensive but the car is easy or you to work on yourself.
Reliability. Good so far
Driving. I could go on about this all week! The chassis is tight like a tiger and the suspension is firm without being too hard for road going comfort. The ZS is very quick to turn in and inspires a great deal of confidence in the driver by providing bags and bags of grip even when pushed ludicrously ...

...I have gone for a MG ZS+ 120
1.8i 16v DOHC.
120 bhp.
the car comes with aircon, 4 airbags, electric everything, central locking, immobiliser, alarm, low profile 16" alloys, blah, blah, blah....
but the thing that makes me tingle is that when you get behind the wheel, it does what you ask it to do!!!
Simple, you say - obvious, even...
but so many cars i have driven in the past do not.
When you put your foot down, the zs responds...
quickly ... ...goes where you point it...
no fuss, no body roll, and loads of feedback from the road.
when you brake...
the car stops.
Now this may all seem a bit simplistic but really you should try it.
when you have driven a zs and you get back in your own car, you suddenly realise how bad it handles.
the ride is hard (just how a girl like me, likes it!!)
it looks fantastic (just like me!!)
It makes men drool (Do you see the pattern yet!!)
Go buy one,
...

We've had our ZS 120+ for just over a year and 20,000 KM from new. The car is a delight to drive, when you want to go for it! Performance is average unless you really rev the engine hard, but the handling is as good as anything I have ever driven. It really does corner incredibly, with just a hint of oversteer in extremis when lifting off, way too late and way to fast.
We opted for the metallic red, with the 18 inch wheels and the big spoiler. Specification ... ...but the fit and finish is pretty poor, with some loose trim and quite a few squeaks and rattles now. This may be due to the ride, which is really too hard, but I suspect that's a pay off for the awesome handling. One tip here - we replaced all four tyres recently with Pirelli P Zero Heros and they are much quieter and even more grippy than the originals.
Boot size is amazing, rear seat room average, and cubby storage is pretty good, although there ...

Advantages: Cheap Sporty Smart and Great for a family Disadvantages: Cheaply made, parts are very costly
...of the interior well the MG ZS180 can handle it a quick polish and its back to being sporty. the four doors is a big bonus and when I wanted a rally style sports car this fitted the bill as I did not need a second car for my family. Downside parts are very costly and when ever something goes wrong the garages seem to expect it so far air intake fell apart £800 to replace had this been my BMW it would have been £200 the air intake is completly plastic ... ...years and my door handle broke off apparently this is a very popular fault and by the amount of door handle for sale I have seen I would guess they were right besides that a new exhaust and 4 sets of tyres in 4 years at a big cost along with my insurance of £1000 fully comp for 1 year and thats with 10 years no claims bonus and I am over 30! but looks like this cost and its worth it. Great bargain snap one up. Dont drive if you are 6 foot its too ...

Advantages: Cheap, quick, great handling, comfortable, looks great Disadvantages: Not a 180
...has now transformed into a MG ZS R140, with quite a cheap modification on the engine. As said this straight forward engine upgrade, which is between 500 to 800 pounds including labour etc is quite effective. The main change to the engine is the fitting of two high lift, long duration camshafts plus a larger alloy throttle body (52MM, standard 48MM) which will allow for the air entry to be improved giving the car and extra umph. Advantages: Cheap to run, insure, easy to drive, fun, spacious, great, comfortable Disadvantages: they dont make them anymore.... well not yet anyway
An AWESOME car this MG ZS 120+ saloon is, i purchased it in 2004 new with Picnic Tray spoiler and CD system, 18" straight alloys and half leather, for less than 12k, BRAND NEW, i have done around 12500 miles and everyone has been a joy, this car (and all previous MG-Rover cars i have owned) have been reliable, cheap to run and insure, easy to drive and a real pleasure, although it has the 1.8 engine, it is no slouch and offers great economy.

Advantages: Handleling, performance, looks, good safety features. Disadvantages: Only downside is the fuel consumption is a bit high, not bad just below average.
The ZS is brilliant, for what you get for your money you cant beat it. I have the 1.8 120-hatchback model, which is very fast of a naturally aspirated 1.8. It handles amazingly over the twisty stuff. The 16inch standard alloys look excellent against the body kit, with sidskirts rear spoiler. The calypso Red is by far the best color in the range, for a standard family hatchback it’s an understatement to say it stands out in the crowd. What more could ... ...no reliability issues at all and I do 5 to 6 days a week 40mile round trip days. The only downside to the car is the fuel economy, on a 12 gallon tank driving economically the best I’ve had is 430miles and the other extreme of really thrashing it I’ve had 250miles. The ZS is based on a 1995 Honda civic, which in my books is good as you get Honda design build quality and a great high revving K series engine. The safety features are very good; side ...

Advantages: Family car with oodles of fun under the bonnet Disadvantages: Think its needs a supercharger ha ha ha!
...for a 2.5 V6 180 MG ZS. You may be thinking extreme upgrading and I know this but I could not resist. My wife told me I had to find a car with four doors and a big boot. I have succeeded in both cases as well as satisfying my own wishes. SPACE This car has enough space to fit 5 adults as well as enough boot space to fit another fully grown adult if need be well you get the idea.
HANDLING
Found that this car may have a little too much power to transfer ... ...in the wet I also found it struggled just a little. Maybe an excuse to buy bigger wheels!!! All in all steering is very light for a big car which suits even my wife.
ENGINE
Absolute monster for the price we paid. It will however only go as fast as you want it to so if you are afraid of going too fast don't be the speedo is in front of you and you have the right to slow down. From inside of the car it sounds very quiet but has a very nice purr from ...

Advantages: Handling, Seats, performance, value for money Disadvantages: If you're really fussy the firm ride could be annoying
I had 5,000 budget to spend and was looking for a 5 door car, I seemed to be centring on a Focus or Seat. Thank goodness I found the MG's, I hadn't even given them a thought! I was amazed at all the low mileage cheap cars out there, I hit on a 2003 Anthracite 120+ which already had the optional 17" alloys and it looks the biz. Only 28K miles and I struck a deal with a garage for only 3,200!! I had put down a holding deposit without having ever driven ... ...picked it up I was amazed, OK it's not supercar performance but it's more than enough for every type of road in the UK. Handling is very impressive, country roads are it's playground, I am still well within it's limits but it instils so much confidence when going into bends, no body roll and the grip is great. I got new tyres all round, Pirellis, they give excellent performance even in the wet, the bulk of that is due to the ZS's chassis and set ...

Advantages: Excellent V6, chassis & handling, good driving position, reliability, brakes, Disadvantages: Some iffy plastics inside, standard stereo lousy, hydraulic clutch can be problematic..
Owned my ZS180 since 2003 and its been excellent. The noise from the V6, the handling and grip levels still make me grin today. Some people criticise the fuel economy but I think it is excellent considering the performance (just don't drive with your right foot on the floor all the time). I'm 6ft 4ins tall and find the seats and driving position very good too. Reliability has been good (some niggles but nothing more than you would expect) despite ... ...induction kit, performance exhaust and the X-Power springs which have enchanced the already superb performance and driving experience further. ...a friend brought to an MG show back in July 2001, it was an absolutly fantastic car to drive.
The noise from the engine was owsome, and it had piles of low down torque and reved happily to nearly 7000rpm.
