...me that the more expensive Magnet would provide the best service, and so I plumped for them. '''THE SOFTISH SELL''' As the local showroom is near work, I went in one day and arranged an appointment with a "designer" (or, more accurately, "salesman"). I was given a sheet of squared paper and asked to take dimension measurements from my kitchen so that they would be able to show me what was possible. We sat at his plush desk with a big LCD screen behind ... ...in the post. I phoned Magnet and they told me not to sign it until the subcontractor's surveyor had been round to check that the dimensions I had given were correct and that there weren't any other unforeseen issues they would have to deal with. I then had a letter saying what needed to be paid and that it had to be paid by such and such a date. Magnet subcontract the building work out to companies who seem to work almost exclusively for them, and ...

...kitchen. Unfortunately we chose Magnet and that dream turned into a nightmare.
The problems began the day we first arranged to see a kitchen designer. Our appointment was for 10am but Magnet rang to say we were double booked and asked us if we could come at 11am instead. We said OK, but when we got there no one was expecting us at all. How we wish we'd walked out there and then. We were made to feel very unwelcome and this was borne out when we ... ...us (amazingly at our local Magnet store). It was delivered to us and left in the garden in the mud and rain along with the worktop. It took a further 11 weeks to sort the correct units out and to get replacement worktops for the water damaged ones. We were lucky that we'd been able to keep part of the old kitchen working otherwise we'd have had shares in the local Chinese takeaway.
Apart from the total lack of product knowledge the staff at Magnet ...

...of stores to visit. Geographically, Magnet (Villiers Road, Kingston upon Thames) came first and were advertising 50% off and a further 10% discount for the first week. Great! So we went in, had a look around and decided to chat to a designer about a layout and a quote.
This is where the problem began. This man was rude and downright snobby. He asked for our budget. I told him £1500 to £2000. Without even asking the size of the kitchen, he told us ... ...from Magnet ever. The impression is of a snotty company who feel they don't need customers with a measly £2000 to spend. Advantages: None Disadvantages: Poor value, pushy salesman, secretive about pricing of applicances, poor aftersales care, poor quality, faulty goods, excessive delivery delay, badly fitted
...we decided to buy a Magnet kitchen (from Villiers Road Kingston branch) basically because we were enticed by a special offer and because the showroom was closest to us. The showroom was very well laid out and the units looked good, enabling us to fully envisage the kitchen we wanted. The salesman was ultra attentive, but to the point of being "over-the-top" and making me feel uncomfortable. However we went ahead as my mother liked the kitchen units ... ...No one should buy from Magnet unless there truly are no other kitchen stores around. At the time we felt there were no other kitchen stores to buy from, as independent stores are substantially more expensive. Following this, a friend mentioned IKEA had good value kitchens which you could design yourself or have some help from their consultants. We had not considered IKEA before, as we did not feel confident enough to fit it ourselves, but after our ...

...and went along to a Magnet showroom. We were prepared to pay a bit more for a quality product, believing the brochure about their 'Craftsmen' fitters and good quality cabinets. How wrong we were. This was late 1999, so if Magnet has changed since then some of this might not apply. However, I would want to alert ciao members to our bad experience. I do know that point viii) below definitely still applies, I phoned to check.
I found the Salespersons ... ...wish I had demanded that Magnet take that rude man out of my house, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. He was more polite when my husband was home, which says a lot.
The fitter is given an allocated fee for fitting the actual kitchen, which doesn't seem to take into account any awkwardness of the kitchen in question (eg awkward corners). Herein lies a major problem with Magnet. The fitters are contracted to Magnet, not employees of Magnet. The ...

...the mistake of thinking that Magnet would be good at fitting kitchens. To close the deal on the sale, the promised that the fit would take 4-5 days and that they would work over weekends. 5 weeks later, the kitchen is still not finished. The biggest problem is that they make you pay upfront so that you really feel that you have no way out of the situation. Quick review of Magnet Kitchens
Magnet Doncaster . Lovely salesman who was at the time very helpfull , that is until you find damaged pieces of your kitchen hidden in the great piles left by the delivery men.
All of a sudden you are a pain and as they have got your money they become a lot less helpfull. I found the manager is patronising in his manners and quite arrogant in his approach allthough he reassured me he did not think he was. I spent over £8000 with them for equip only and they do not even want to replace a damaged cooker despite earlier reassurances. I am taking them to County Court . I would not advise anyone to ever deal with them again if my treatment is their answer to customer relations . ...

Advantages: Good looking kitchens Disadvantages: Poor service
First one was for a property development in London - friendly staff, poor design by new boy. Failed to spot our 'p|ssed' walls (they sloped in a bit) and the layout was poor. We re-jigged it and all was well apart from one work top which was completely wrong. They also missed an end panel out. In fairness all was fixed quickly but they weren't very proactive.
Next one was in a flat - this time friendly staff and good design. We opted for their installation. ... ...minor but all annoying - fitter came back 3 times. Once when I rang to complain I was referred back to the manufacturer when it was clearly their fault...
Next one - friendly staff, good design. However I had more time to check things this time - saved £2000 approx on appliances by looking on the web - NEFF cooker, gas hob, microwave and extractor - this despite their 'big' discounts. Take out the labour element and voila - a £15k kitchen comes ...

We love our new Magnet kitchen and overall our experience was good mainly thanks to the excellent fitters who sorted all the inevitable hiccups on a big job with ease and professionalism. Three months later I'm still chasing the designer for my promised nectar points on the granite. One thing that should have ...

Our experience with Magnet kitchens in Ireland has been fabtastic! My Mum needed a new kitchen and she decided on Magnet because of their quality & attention to detail. In-Design Scotland installed our Magnet kitchen they were so easy to deal with. We decided on a kitchen from them because they offered a discount on the Magnet kitchen we were looking for and according to their web which took a lot of searching (www.indesignscotland.co.uk) site they offered to look after our kitchen from start to finish. BEWARE MAGNET KITCHENS
This is surely the worst company I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Our new dream kitchen project has been a disaster from beginning to end. The work, which was paid for in full in advance, was started in November 1999 by mid August 2000, is still incomplete. We have had multiple visits for remedial work (replacement of damaged doors and faulty units) and several aborted visits for remedial work, when fitters ... ...be at home for them.
Magnet Kitchens still owe us a refund for two units, which were paid for and never fitted. Their fitter was incompetent, although we were assured he was "the best", so worth waiting an extra six weeks for in the first place. 1) Units were damaged on fitting. 2) Following removal of our old kitchen units and old tiling, the new units were fitted up against the old walls with old paint/plaster and paper still in situ. The litany ...

Design service not as good as advertising suggests but none the less we bought the kitchen as seemed good value for money.
Indeed kitchen is good, but few things have gone wrong - issues with design and leaking tap/sink afterwards.
Each time there has been a problem the shop have been very dismissive (and i would even go as far as to say aggressive) in dealing with the issues.
Good kitchen but awful after sales service! ...
