Excellent University with a proper student life

Advantages: Really friendly city, awesome nightlife, incredibly cheap, city/uni close together, 80,000 students!
Disadvantages: Not clean city, some departmental buildings really grimey, hectic lifestyle

...If you are going to Manchester for your first year, there is only one place you need to stay - Owens Park! Seriously, this place has got a reputation for being one of the liveliest student campuses in the North. The wardens even say, don't come here if you looking to sleep, or looking for a quiet place to study! There are over 1,000 students in this area alone; it is located in Fallowfield so you do not need to go all the way into town for a night ...
...better night. Every student who lived here said it was the best year they ever had of their life. Everyone who didn't stay, always say they wished they had. Trust me, this place is first-class for fun. As for other accommodation, there are a lot of private halls of residents offered by private companies. These are like luxuries. They charge higher rent, but they are more like high class hotel suites some of them. The Student Union is generally ...

The place for the best degrees and fun

Advantages: brilliant uni
Disadvantages: none

...anyone to go to. The Manchester University is a great building, there’s quite a lot of block depending on what you are studying but after a few weeks it won’t be as daunting as your first day. You do need quite high grades so if you do get offered a place then take it. Manchester University is situated on the top of Oxford Street, one long road and if you walk up that road you will walk past the Manchester Metropolitan opposite the BBC ...
...high success rates and since it is ranked very highly you’re more likely to get a job after you have finished studying. Located ten minutes away from the City Centre you will never get bored, there’s loads of places to eat, have fun and the night life isn’t that bad either. It can get a little packed though with other students from the other universities coming down. There’s Wilmslow Road not so far from the University if ...

No reason to look anywhere else!

Advantages: everything's great
Disadvantages: crime rate is high

Manchester Univesity is fantastic! The courses are great - especially in science and engineering and are well recognised as being good by industry. The city is vibrant and a very fun place to be a student. It's a cheap place to live - both for accomodation and going out. And the univeristy union is also excellent. The number of students there speaks for itself. I think Manchester has the largest student population in Europe. The city is also easy ...
...crime levels are high - burglary of student houses in certain areas (e.g. Moss Side) is a popular past time for the locals. So make sure you're well insured. having said that, they are easily detered, an alarm on the house and decent locks puts the theives off pretty easily. ...

Excellent Uni, great city

Advantages: Good union, lots of resources
Disadvantages: Weather

I can thoroughly recommend Manchester as a great place to be, both for the University and the city itself. One great advantage Manchester has for students is that there are around 40,000 students studying at the three main Universities in the city. This ensures that there is a wide range of services, shops and pubs to cater for students needs. For the obvious such as student bars and clubs offering cheap entrance and drinks, there are other, more ...
...unions in the area. Manchester Met union is 5 mins walk away and they have some great bars in there!!! There are a wide range of bookshops to cater for everyones needs and the library is one of the biggest in the country. The city itself is greatm the centre is compact (well, compared to London anyway) and has everything you could need, including a great second hand record store in Vinyl Exchange, a lot of my loan was spent in there!!! Come to ...

The University of Manchester is Brilliant

Advantages: Good reputation, great location
Disadvantages: none that I have come across

...year at The University of Manchester (just those dreaded end of year exams to go) and now agree with the saying "University is the best time of your life". This uni is well established with an excellent reputation and is located near the city centre, for lots of shopping, drinking and clubbing. To say I was nervous about going to uni would be an understatement - I was terrified! This soon went, however, as I was made to feel welcome by my department, ...
...excellent study services, the primary one being the University library. It offers brilliant services (more books than I ever thought I could see, study rooms, desks, computers) and lots of support from the staff. The student union is a great place to go inbetween lectures when you just don't feel like working. It is cheap and has many dirnks and food offers. In fact, as there are 40,000 students alone in this uni and two uni's close by (Manchester ...

Superb University

Advantages: Manchester, good facilities
Disadvantages: Some parts of Manchester

I graduated from Manchester University in 1996 and spent four very happy years there. Manchester was not my first choice of University but after visiting all the sites I'd applied to I decided it was the best. The university is close to town centre with all the clubs and pubs you could ever want, and now that the town centre is being rebuilt the shops are much better. There are top class sports facilities both for viewing sports and taking part, ...

Choose Manchester because.......

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...but not sure which? Well, Manchester HAS to be on your short list - you simply can not make up a balanced decision without considering this university and I implore you to go and take a look at it. OK, you may think there are better ones? - but what criteria are you setting? Your parents may want you to go to some posh dump - but Manchester buzzes! Few cities offer you the excitement that Manchester can provide seven days and nights a week! Of course ...
...then do tell them that Manchester is experiencing a huge surge in popularity by the mobile professional classes, with the central district and warehouse conversions fetching "london like" sky-high prices for accommodation in what was previously a depressing place. Manchester is on the move! You'll love it! Put in on your short list now! Good Luck ...

Centre of excellence

Advantages: Quality of education, Manchester, staff (both academic and admin)
Disadvantages: The weather

The University of Manchester stands out amongst Britain's universities as not just educationally excellent but also part of a vibrant and exciting city. Having recently completing my Master degree at Manchester I have found both the academic and administrative staff to be informative, friendly and helpful. I could not have wished for a better educational institution and a more enjoyable social life. Educationally, the quality of course materials ...

University of Manchester

Advantages: Great city, excellent university, lots of accommodation in halls and private sector. Cheap public transport.
Disadvantages: French dept not great, rains a lot, eating on campus is expensive & there aren't enough eateries.

...nights! Shopping in Manchester is brilliant and there really is something for everyone - trendy boutiques, big department stores and little indie shops and markets. The city of Manchester itself is amazing - it is developing really fast at the moment so now is an exciting time to be living in the city. Looking at the skyline of Manchester you can see loads of cranes, especially with the biggest residential building in England (Europe?) being built ...

The law dept is great and the teaching is usually excellent - you really feel like youre being taught by experts. Many of the lecturers have written books and articles and work as governmental advisors and similar things. Everyone is friendly and helpful and I settled in really easily. The french dept is a bit ...

Manchester uni rocks!

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Manchester university is an excellent place to study for many reasons. It's right in the middle of a large city so there are always lots of things going on and you're never short of something to do.There's a wide variety of entertainment and sports for everyone. The uni itself is placed right in the centre of manchester, therefore allowing easy access to all these facilities. The courses at the uni are also of good quality. Most have been rated highly ...

A great place to study

Advantages: excellent university
Disadvantages: none really

Manchester University is one of the best universities in the North West, you need high grade entry's to get in but once you have there's no looking back. Our family has had three graduates from Manchester and that's very good. The tutors are very friendly and it's not long before you settle in and make friends. If you are thinking of a university to go to, then look no further. Manchester is highly regarded and if you get a place don't give it up. ...

Review of Manchester Uni

Advantages: Everything. And lots of it.
Disadvantages: Too little time to do everything

Manchester is a fantastic place to go and study. The courses and facilities that the University has to offer are second to none, so its hardly surprising that competition for places is high. The university has one of the biggest libraries in the land and a mass of courses from which to choose. The city offers more shops, pubs, clubs and whatever else you can think of, than you can handle. Manchester is such a cosmopolitan place that there really ...
...reportedly the highest number of societies in the UK - and if you can't find one that you like, well why not form one?! Accomodation is plentiful in the way of halls, flats, and student houses. But don't leave it until the last minute or all the best places will be fully booked! Bus routes into the university and city are plentiful and travel up and down Oxford Road every minute of the day. There really are no disadvantages to studying in Manchester, ...

A good place to be a student

Advantages: More night life than you can shake a stick at
Disadvantages: Many Mancunians don't seem to like students

Manchester is definately not a city I would visit now if I could possibly avoid it. Maybe working life has made me soft, but I really don't like the city. Before I went to Manchester University, I didn't much like the city either. The strange thing is, I really enjoyed my time there. Three years was enough, but you are pretty much guaranteed to have three years of enjoyment. I assume that you are clever enough to keep on top of your studies and have ...
...ways to enjoy yourself. With so many students in one place (Manchester University, UMIST, MMU, Salford Uni...), there must be a group somewhere who enjoy the things you enjoy, and the university facilities are fantastic. In short, though I don't much care for the attitude of the locals towards students, I would definately recommend the place to anyone looking for a place to have some fun whilst getting a respectable degree. ...

It's not so grim up north...

Advantages: Good reputation and good courses
Disadvantages: Crime rates in Manchester!

...south' my family are from Manchester and as it was one of only a handful of universities offering the course I wanted (Speech Pathology) it was my first choice. I spent my first year in Whitworth Park - student accomodation right next to the main campus affectionatley know as The Toblerones due to the shape of the buildings. These halls generally accomodate 7/8 single sex students in a three level flat and when i was there (94-98) where just what ...
...student union bar and the Manchester Academy and other uni music venues. Whitworth Park is also close to shops and take-aways (although one of my flat mates got really bad salmonella from the kebab shop on the corner) and for those cultures people the halls are next to the Whitworth Art gallery which is definately worth a visit. As for manchester as a city, my only advice is to think very carefully about where you rent your house once you leave ...

Solid Brick

Advantages: Cheap, As Good As Anywhere (even London)
Disadvantages: Manchester United, One of the worst student unions I've been to

Manchester is without a doubt one of the best universities in the country to attend. I think it is true as a rule that no matter which university you attend you are going to have a fabulous time and come away with what you wanted but it does help to choose a good university to begin with. Manchester obviously has the big advantage of being one of the largest student cities in England along with London (but doesn't suffer from the high prices of London) ...
...aspirations will probably know that Manchester is one of the more active political unions (even if it is run by extremists and has to be one of the worst in the country I've seen - although it has improved since its new make-over) and should give them a good grounding for the future. So, in conclusion, cheap (in comparison to most other cities), packed with things to do - it definitely is the place to go. ...
