Advantages Advantages Is a key player for England

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes gives his wicket away

Marcus Trescothick - Test Career Marcus Trescothick has been a superb find for English cricket. He has come a long way from his days at county side Somerset. He has been an integral part of the success England have recently enjoyed. He made his debut against the West Indies at Old Trafford in August of 2000. He is playing in his 50th test this week against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Since his debut has been an ever present for England and has contributed many runs in England games. He also captained the side at Lord's in the absence of skipper Michael Vaughan through injury ... more

Advantages Advantages great talent, proved himself in the international arena, could go far

Disadvantages Disadvantages none - but wait and see after the Aussies

It makes such a pleasant change for a County player to get his chance in the England team – and take his chance with both hands! That’s exactly what Somerset opener Marcus Trescothick has done in the past year. With the England side in the doldrums for the past decade, much vaunted County ‘stars’ have been selected for England and failed miserably. Some like Graeme Hick and Mark Ramprakash have had chance after chance after chance – and repeatedly failed to re-produce their county form at Test level. Not so Trescothick. Right from the off, he has got the runs and ... more

Advantages Advantages He's young, has adjusted very well to international cricket and he's a very nice bloke to boot

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

...then I will eat my hat. Marcus Trescothick was originally called into the England one day squad for last season's triangular Natwest Trophy series against the West Indies as cover for the injured Nick Knight, have been previously part of the England A tour party in 1999/2000. In the First Test against Sri Lanka he became the first Somerset player to score a Test Century for England since Ian Botham in 1983/84. (Doubtless the sticklers might claim that Botham's 137 not out in the First Test in 1986-87 in Australia was scored before he had made his Worcestershire début, but the truth of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent temperament; good range of shots

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard to play well when the castle is falling around you...

As I write this, Australia have just extended their grip on the Ashes to a seventh successive series, a record which even Bradman's "Invincibles" couldn't match. Apologies for not saying "look away now if you don't want to know the result" - but let's face it, it hardly comes as a surprise, does it? Still, there is the odd gleam of hope amidst the depressingly familiar encircling gloom, and Marcus Trescothick provides one of the brightest. "Banger" - so called because of his taste for sausages, rather than anything unseemly (well, I suppose it depends what he *does* with the sausages...) - is ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great Cricketer

Disadvantages Disadvantages England's gain is Somerset's loss

One of the brightest spots to come from the One Day and Ashes series was the continued emergence of Somerset opening batsman Marcus Trescothick. He has shown real promise with great attacking shots and getting plenty of runs on the board, continuing the good work from the West Indies series win last summer and a good winter tour last year. At 25 he is one of the few emerging talents to have made a place certain in the England team, and plays with such conviction, you feel he has been there for 10 years not 2. Local lad Trescothick has only ever played for Somerset, and earned his call up to ... more

    Advantages Advantages great ability

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Marcus Trescothick is one of the great recent finds in English cricket along with Craig White. He is an accomplished player at test level already after only a handful of tests in what is the most difficult position of all as opening batsman. What I like are the fact he has a great technique and temperment. He does not look afraid or nervous , in fact he looks like he has been around for a number of years - a sure sign of a quality player. Duncan Fletcher and the selectors deserve credit for giving him a chance and it is so rewarding when players such as Marcus reply that faith shown in them ... more

Advantages Advantages Superb temperament, plays spin well.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Needs experience and to concentrate in long innings

Marcus Trescothick has become England latest batsman to score a century in a Test. Trescothick was 25 on Christmas Day 2000 and having made such a promising test debut in August against the West Indies had a good series in Pakistan and now against Sri Lanka. England have needed a good left-hand, right-hand partnership for some time and Trescothick being left handed gives them that option with Atherton as a right-hander. With Thorpe also a left hander England have some variety at last in their batting line-up. Although he bats left-handed Trescothick is a useful right-arm seamer capable of ... more

    Advantages Advantages Gret moral booster

Disadvantages Disadvantages When you loose, it aint

Marcus Trescothick has been absoltely sensational since making his debut for England in the one day tri nations series, and if he is not selected for the up coming Test matches it will be criminal, for so long England batting has been poor at the top of the order in one day matches, and frankly it is a nice change to see Stuart knockin the centaries of and others supporting. Well done to English Cricket, lets hope it continues. I must admit though Thursdays defeat, was pretty dissapointing, even though Gough and Mullaly arn't paid to hit winning runs, it is not difficult to get bat on ball ... more

Advantages Advantages Looks to be the long term answer to one of england's

Disadvantages Disadvantages too soon to judge long term potential

After the successful recalls of Dominic Cork and Michael Vaughan, the English selectors are in the unusual position of having made some positive decisions. However, by far their best accomplishment has been the inclusion of Marcus Trescothick in the one-day side, even if it did take timely injuries to Hussian and Knight to force his inclusion. In his first 5 games he has looked completely unfazed, playing with good technique and composure, averaging 52, and being the leading run scorer in this tournament thus far. Compared to the recent failures of Adams and Maynard, it is nice to see the ... more
