Advantages Advantages The best thing on Radio 1

Disadvantages Disadvantages Should be on three hours

I am a big fan of Mark Radcliffe on radio 1. Currently this show is aired from 2pm –4pm on weekday afternoons, but from 19th Feb 01 it will air from 1pm – 3pm. The show is hosted by two funny guys, Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley (the Boy Lard). Hence, Mark and Lard. Previously to the current afternoon slot, they have hosted the Breakfast show (before Zoe Ball) and had the Graveyard shift for a number of years, which is the 10pm – midnight slot. Anyway, the show is these two chap’s unique brand of comedy, games, catchphrases, and some good music thrown in to boot! Music ... more

Advantages Advantages Top quality entertainment, full of unique humour and sarcasm

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only on for two hours

I first heard Mark and Lard in 1997 when they were plugging the gap between Chris Evans and Zoe Ball on the Radio 1 Breakfast show. They were unique and funny then, but as Radio 1 opted for Ball Mark and Lard were moved to the afternoon. Since then the show has developed still further. They are constantly working on fresh ideas like Vague News, My TV Show and Chalk and Cheese. Mix in regular favourites like the Cheesily Cheerful Chart Challenge, the usual banter and the unique way they tell the time and you’re set for the afternoon. As shown by some of their TV work they can do serious work ... more

    Advantages Advantages Abso-bloomin-lutely chuffin' hilarious

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not everyone's cup of char. But then again, what is?

First-time listeners to Mark and Lard's show (BBC Radio One, Monday-Friday, 2pm) will probably be baffled, and wonder what the hell the two cheeky Northerners are on (about). But stick with it for a few days, and soon you'll be unable to tear yourself away from their unique brand of humour. They even manage to cunningly slag off Radio One's currently dance-heavy output without getting themselves in trouble with the bosses. The skits which the duo have performed over the last year are hilarious - from phone-in quizzes such as Chalk & Cheese, The Spice Is Right and Family Fortune Cookies to ... more

Advantages Advantages Funny , Entertaining and Good Music Too!!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Followed by Chris Moyles

The radio station I usually listen to is Classic Fm (being a bit of an auld git, and liking music by a lot of dead people) , however I have to tune in to Mark Radcliffe and his sidekick Lard (Marc Riley ex instrumentalist with Mark Smith's fall , who had to leave to to a clash of names). Generally the music they play is decent up to the minute stuff, although the odd chart aberration does creep through. They're unpretentious , generally funny , and help the afternoon fly by. Me and a copule of mates at work always enter the Cheesily Cheerful Chart Challenge, but the highest I've got is number ... more

Advantages Advantages Pretty good strike rate

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Dynamite form expected

Okay, so there's no-one else good on daytime radio, but even so, Mark & Lard still trounce allcomers. Not that they're perfect (the constant innuendo can occassionally grate, and sometimes revelling in mediocrity can be, well, mediocre), and the blasted playlist doesn't help, but there's still a case to be made for national treasure status. Where other DJ's contrive a smuggish oafishness out of a desperate desire to please, Mark & Lard seem naturals, idle banter beating gimmickry, a pub conversation you wish you could have. And they're intelligent as well! Shit, they'll be sacked soon ... more

    Advantages Advantages Hilarious afternoon comedy

Disadvantages Disadvantages should have a longer show

Mark & Lard have got the funniest radio show on air at the moment, these two men from Manchester have the zaniest sense of humour without it being too hard to understand. They started off on the breakfast show before getting moved to an afternoon slot. Whilst having an excellent choice of music to play they have time to fit in a brilliant amount of the funniest games and sketches. With hilarious antics such as Vague News, Beat the Clock, The Cheesily Chart Challenge and Fat Harry White this show has got to played on nearly every radio between 2pm and 4pm. Mark and Lard (Mark Radcliffe and Marc ... more

    Advantages Advantages great funny show

Disadvantages Disadvantages some of their joke grow old after a while

This is one of the best shows on Radio 1. The show is hosted by to northerners, which are just having a laugh. The have tonnes of jokes. My favourite part of the show is the cheesily cheerful chart challenge this is where they give a topic which is in the media at the moment, and people phone in with songs which best describe the quote. The show is on 1pm to 3 pm with Chris moles show afterwards which is very similar to the mark and lard show. I would definitely recommend you to listen to it, Its a good show to listen to but some of their joke do get enjoying when listening to it every day. ... more

Advantages Advantages Pretty good music, hilarious DJs

Disadvantages Disadvantages Scheduled pretty badly (I'm not home at 2pm)

Despite what Chris Moyles might say, Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley are the true saviours of Radio 1. They started with the ‘Graveyard Shift’ 10pm-12midnight, moved to the Breakfast Show (and drove off all the teenyboppers, an admirable achievement,) and now they’re on between 2pm and 4pm. They have some freedom from the R1 playlist, and they exercise this freedom often, giving some GRATE songs some much-needed recognition. Their ‘quality items’ come thick and fast, and are inevitably hilarious. A particular favourite of mine is ‘Vague News,’ which is exactly what the name suggests. The only ... more

    Advantages Advantages Irrelevant, witty, different

Disadvantages Disadvantages On at a really bad time, music

Biggaddy, bigaddy, bong! If that's the wrong spelling I apologise, but can't help but think that you're sad for noticing... Mark and Lard have been moved around by Radio 1 scheduling more times than I can be bothered to remember- going from the late night slot they did have (in the beginning- ahhhh), to their afternoon slot now. For anyone who works or does anything this is a really bad time, and it is made worse by the fact they are only given two hours a day. However, that doesn't stop them- and they've managed to cheer up the wilderness that is daytime radio. Their irrelevant jokes ... more

    Advantages Advantages comical

    Disadvantages Disadvantages slightly repetitive

The Marc and Lard show (now in a new earlier time slot) stands out from the crowd of bland and boring afternoon radio shows because of the strong personalities of the two presenters. You can tell that these two are good friends who are of the same age and share the weird musical/ comedy influences. Bu then, Marc Radcliffe (a sucessful radio producer years before he became a presenter) and Mark Riley or Lard(formerly a musician with legendary Manchester band, the Fall) are not your typical "radio personalities". Like John Peel they enjoy the best in new indie music (although the playlisting ... more
