Biggidy Biggidy BONG

AdvantagesThe best thing on Radio 1

DisadvantagesShould be on three hours

"...am a big fan of Mark Radcliffe on radio 1. Currently this show is aired from 2pm –4pm on weekday afternoons, but from 19th Feb 01 it will air from 1pm – 3pm. The show is hosted by two funny guys, Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley (the Boy Lard). Hence, Mark and Lard. Previously to the current afternoon slot, they have hosted the Breakfast show (before Zoe Ball) and had the Graveyard shift for a number of years, which is the 10pm – ..." Read review

Keep skinning the opposition (alive) - the best show on the radio

AdvantagesTop quality entertainment, full of unique humour and sarcasm

DisadvantagesOnly on for two hours

"I first heard Mark and Lard in 1997 when they were plugging the gap between Chris Evans and Zoe Ball on the Radio 1 Breakfast show. They were unique and funny then, but as Radio 1 opted for Ball Mark and Lard were moved to the afternoon. Since then the show has developed still further. They are constantly working on fresh ideas like Vague News, My TV Show and Chalk and Cheese. Mix in regular favourites like the Cheesily Cheerful Chart Challenge, ..." Read review

Mustn't Grrrrrrumble!

AdvantagesAbso-bloomin-lutely chuffin' hilarious

DisadvantagesNot everyone's cup of char. But then again, what is?

"First-time listeners to Mark and Lard's show (BBC Radio One, Monday-Friday, 2pm) will probably be baffled, and wonder what the hell the two cheeky Northerners are on (about). But stick with it for a few days, and soon you'll be unable to tear yourself away from their unique brand of humour. They even manage to cunningly slag off Radio One's currently dance-heavy output without getting themselves in trouble with the bosses. The skits which the duo ..." Read review

The Only Reason To Listen to Radio One

AdvantagesFunny , Entertaining and Good Music Too!!

DisadvantagesFollowed by Chris Moyles

"...have to tune in to Mark Radcliffe and his sidekick Lard (Marc Riley ex instrumentalist with Mark Smith's fall , who had to leave to to a clash of names). Generally the music they play is decent up to the minute stuff, although the odd chart aberration does creep through. They're unpretentious , generally funny , and help the afternoon fly by. Me and a copule of mates at work always enter the Cheesily Cheerful Chart Challenge, but the highest I've ..." Read review

No competition

AdvantagesPretty good strike rate

DisadvantagesDynamite form expected

"...daytime radio, but even so, Mark & Lard still trounce allcomers. Not that they're perfect (the constant innuendo can occassionally grate, and sometimes revelling in mediocrity can be, well, mediocre), and the blasted playlist doesn't help, but there's still a case to be made for national treasure status. Where other DJ's contrive a smuggish oafishness out of a desperate desire to please, Mark & Lard seem naturals, idle banter beating gimmickry, a ..." Read review

Stop.............Carry on

AdvantagesHilarious afternoon comedy

Disadvantagesshould have a longer show

"Mark & Lard have got the funniest radio show on air at the moment, these two men from Manchester have the zaniest sense of humour without it being too hard to understand. They started off on the breakfast show before getting moved to an afternoon slot. Whilst having an excellent choice of music to play they have time to fit in a brilliant amount of the funniest games and sketches. With hilarious antics such as Vague News, Beat the Clock, The ..." Cheesily cheerful, natch...

AdvantagesPretty good music, hilarious DJs

DisadvantagesScheduled pretty badly (I'm not home at 2pm)

"...what Chris Moyles might say, Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley are the true saviours of Radio 1. They started with the ‘Graveyard Shift’ 10pm-12midnight, moved to the Breakfast Show (and drove off all the teenyboppers, an admirable achievement,) and now they’re on between 2pm and 4pm. They have some freedom from the R1 playlist, and they exercise this freedom often, giving some GRATE songs some much-needed recognition. Their ‘quality items’ come ..." Read review

It's Not About the Music...

AdvantagesIrrelevant, witty, different

DisadvantagesOn at a really bad time, music

"Biggaddy, bigaddy, bong! If that's the wrong spelling I apologise, but can't help but think that you're sad for noticing... Mark and Lard have been moved around by Radio 1 scheduling more times than I can be bothered to remember- going from the late night slot they did have (in the beginning- ahhhh), to their afternoon slot now. For anyone who works or does anything this is a really bad time, and it is made worse by the fact they are only given ..." Read review

not bobbins

Advantagescomical

Disadvantagesslightly repetitive

"...he became a presenter) and Mark Riley or Lard(formerly a musician with legendary Manchester band, the Fall) are not your typical "radio personalities". Like John Peel they enjoy the best in new indie music (although the playlisting restricts them a bit) but the music is secondary to their mad competitions, guests and regular features. My favourite competition of theirs was "Dobbins or Bobbins", where a usually very confused listener had to decide ..." Read review

The Boy Lard still going strong

AdvantagesEverything!

Disadvantagessome material is repeated too much

"Mark and Lard are an aquired taste. Once you starting experimenting with them you will get hooked. Mark Radcliffe is the sensible, witty host who says some incredibly funny things. Marc Riley (Lard) is the sidekick with a catalogue of catch-phrases that is basically endless. This quizes on the show change regularly and although they are all similar they don't fail to entertain. However the highlight of the show is definetly when Lard pretends ..." Read review

Radio wonderful

AdvantagesGood music, likeable DJs

DisadvantagesCan be repetitive

"If only every radio show was like this I might turn on the wireless more often. Decent music interspersed with the very worst that the Radio 1 playlist can force on the DJs...But when forced to play soulless smooth rubbish like Craig David at least Racliffe 'n Riley have the honesty to follow it with comments like "the worst 3 minutes of my life..." The pair's banter and general attitude hits the spot for most of us of a certain age - late twenties ..." Read review

Better than tinpot local radio

AdvantagesGood music, funny

DisadvantagesNone really

"Mark and Lard are the best thing on radio 1 at the moment. They have some great features such as the wheel of misfortune, oh lucky you and the yes/no game which takes the rip out of the game they do on local radio where a caller mustn't say yes or no for a whole minute. Despite telling the same jokes every day they still manage to be funny. In fact knowing what's coming makes it even more funny. They manage to remain modest and down to earth and not ..." Read review

Say cheese

AdvantagesGood music, sometimes very funny

DisadvantagesCan be annoying, esp. cheesily cheerful chart

"Mark and Lard. Pure cheese. These blokes have a rather strange sense of humour, and I'm not sure that many people really get it. Half of the time I haven't got a clue what they're on about! They have some very strange features, which are strangley enjoyable. Mark and Lard were probably a bit too weird for the Breakfast Show, so they got moved to the early afternoon slot. Unfortunately I don't finish work until 3:30 on 4 days of the week, so I only ..." Read review
