Disadvantages Disadvantages Not large enough range of Count On Us products

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN June 2001 When I wrote a Ciao opinion about Marks & Spencer a few months ago I was quite scathing about the company. Fortunately most Ciao members agreed with me. Not everything about Marks & Spencer is gloomy though. The Foodhall and Home Furnishings departments made more profit than last year and are booming. I usually buy my frozen food from Iceland and groceries from Tesco. I rarely visit Marks & Spencer's Foodhall but the food quality is excellent. Really M & S can match or better the quality of food sold in all the UK supermarkets. The quality control of M & S food ... more

Advantages Advantages The food is heavenly

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rather pricey and no stores in some towns

Ok, I was one of those kids who had to hide the labels on her packed lunch at school (and her clothes) cause my Mum was a 'Marks and Sparks freak'. It was just such an embarrassment when I was younger. However, when I left home, I suddenly found that I didn't like Sainsbury's cheddar, or Tescos Chicken Tikka Masala! I eventually ventured into Marks and Spencer myself... was I turning into a fuddy duddy? In reality, Marks and Spencer food is just better than everyone elses... try their cheddar, I guarantee that you won't regret it, nor will you go back to other supermarket brands. The Chicken ... more

Advantages Advantages yummy food to cater for all

Disadvantages Disadvantages cost of good food

Who hasn't been standing in a long long queue with your carefully selected goods in the trolley/basket, and thought is this really worth the wait. Your right no one. You get to the supermarket with good intentions, know what you want and refer to the shopping list (unless you’ve a good memory) then they have changed the layout, all the food has been relocated. So what was a quick trip to the shop turns out be outing, hunting for that steak and kidney pie, sack of spuds or sickly treacle pud. After we have found are items, we then brave the queue, and of course we all think we have picked ... more

Marks & Spencer Food If i were a milionaire, i would buy virtually all of my food shopping in Marks and Spencer. I have never been disspointed with the sheer quality of their food produce. You won't find half rotten tomatoes in Marks and Sparks! (Unlike other supermarkets i could mention). Everything really is so fresh and amazing quality. Of course for this freshness and quality you do usually have to pay quite a high price, though not always. It is the type of shop where i only occassionally will buy little treats as it is quite simply usually above my financial means. However, i was ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good quality

Disadvantages Disadvantages But not THAT good, high prices, limited choice, conservative recipies

I tried Marks and Spencer Food Halls over the past couple of years because I started working in the city centre and, this being Birmingham, we didn't actually have a supermarket in the city centre until very recently. So if you wanted groceries, it was pretty much M&S or nothing. I hadn't really tried M&S before and I'd heard it sold great food, so I decided to give it a go when I wanted to treat myself or have friends round. I tried a fair selection of their ready-meals and since I have a very sweet tooth, their puddings and cakes. I tried the Italian and Indian selections of ready-meals and ... more

Advantages Advantages amazingly tasty, excellent food...and you don't need a cab!

Disadvantages Disadvantages a little on the pricey side

Well where do I start with this one apart from to say that I am a total Marks and Spencers Foodhall addict! The food is amazing and working around the corner from the large Nottingham store does not help my addiction one tiny bit. My parents have always shopped at Marks and Spencer for food, it was mainly just for special occasions like Christmas, Easter, Birthday parties etc but in the last few years the numbers of offers and the introduction of the meal deal has meant it has become more of a weekly treat than a special occasion. I don't think that I have ever had a product that I do not like ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of choice, shops everywhere, customer service, quality.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little pricey, long waits at checkouts at peak times

Living in London I find myself buying more and more food from M&S foodhalls. I remember when M&S was seen as a dowdy, middle class, middle aged store selling overpriced frumpy clothes. It has gone a complete transformation. M&S foodhalls are everywhere. Find them in M&S stores (usually in the basement) at train stations and in motorway service stations. The food isn't exactly cheap but its good quality and there is lots of choice. M&S are ethically minded. From March 2006, all coffee has been Fairtrade, just like the coffee in the Café Revive. They use recycled materials in their sandwich ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good food

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very expensive (Over pirced)

Marks and Spencer definatly has an image problem which it's not letting go of... Marks and Spencer, as we all know have been losing more and more profits over the last two years. Every few months they seem to announce that they have lost more, surly these well-paid managers know what's going wrong? I am just 18 and have predominately grown up with parents who shop at Marks and Spencer. I do have to admit that up until I was about 7, I did where their clothes, but not out of choice, I had no fashion sense. Soon enough Marks and Spencer became know to me as “Sad” and wildly un ... more

The following is a tale of what happened to me five years ago, and to this day I still shudder when I think about it.... I had always loved nectarines. Especially the ripe juicey Spanish nectarines that came in packs of four in M&S. I worked in the shop next door to M&S, and when I got my chargecard, I must have been their best friend. Every day I'd go and buy my lunch there, and also do my food shopping there - expensive but convenient. However, that lunchtime I was in for a bit of a surprise. I ate one nectarine, and it was lovely. Sweet, ripe and juicy. Still hungry, I started on the second ... more

    Advantages Advantages outstanding quality

Disadvantages Disadvantages high prices and not as wide range of products as in some other supermarkets

I work for one of the Marks and Spencer Outlets so I am entitled to a 20% discount card which I can use in High Street M&S stores. And believe you me I do and not on clothes but on food. I first tested the food when I worked as an Au-Pair for a weathy elderly couple who loved their Marks. They would not buy other fish than M&S Chunky Haddock in breadcrums. I just love dairy products. I can not have enough of M&S creamy Extreamly Fruity individual as well as packs of four. They look and smell lovely, taste delicious, have lots of fruit in them and are all bio which means they are good for our ... more
