Advantages Advantages Small tablets so easy to swallow, clearly labelled packet, minimal side effects, helped my acne

Disadvantages Disadvantages Forgettable, affected by vomiting and diarrhoea, links to cancer risks,

This contraceptive pill was the first method of contraception I was formally ever put on so was naturally a bit nervous as to what the side effects were of taking a contraceptive pill! I had heard lots of off-putting rumours like it gives you cancer and it makes you gain weight like crazy - so of course I was hesitant! However, as I was in a stable relationship I figured it was time for something stable.Basically, the pill works by releasing hormones oestrogen and progestogen which stops an egg being released. It also thins the lining of the womb so fertilised eggs wont implant themselves on ... more

Advantages Advantages Hardly any Side Effects, No Pregnancy, Helps Skin.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages A Little Nausea!

Now when it comes to the contraceptive pill I consider myself to be quite an expert, well more so than my boyfriend anyway who is constantly telling me things he's heard about it on the TV or Tricia which really do not qualify him as a doctor... if only he'd listen! * My Experience with The Pill * When I was 13 I suffered from terrible period pains, so much so that I had to stay in bed for 2 days a month in absolute agony. As a result I was put on Mycrogynon which worked absolutely fine for me and after 6 months I came off it as my periods had settled down. Then at 17 I decided to go back on ... more

    Advantages Advantages Don't get pregnant

Disadvantages Disadvantages remembering to take the pill every day

HISTORY OF MARVELON Marvelon was origionally brought out in the 1980's, it contatins 150g of microgram desogestrel and 30 microgram ethinylestradiol. This means it's a combined low-dose oral contraceptive. To me this means nothing, I didn't really think about what my body would be taking in when taking the pill, all I cared about was not getting pregnant straight away. However the doctor assured me this was a safe and good pill to take at my age (at the time, I was 20). HOW DOES MARVELON WORK? Marvelon come's in a slim blue and white box, with three packs of pills in the box. Each pack is ... more

Advantages Advantages prevents pregnancy, free on NHS, regulates periods and make them lighter and less painful

Disadvantages Disadvantages can cause horribe side effects

The female oral contraceptive pill (known simply as 'the pill') has been around since the 1960s and has been well known for its convenience of being a fully reversible and easy-to-administer method of preventing pregnancy. It is a discreet and private way of enjoying sex without having to worry too much about the consequences - although it must be said at this stage that no method is 100% reliable, and this fact must always be remembered. What Exactly Does The Pill Do? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are variations of the pill, although they all more or less do the same thing, which is to ... more

Advantages Advantages effective with less side effects

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not suitable for all

Marvelon is the only pill I tried and it suited me fine. I did not have to try any other pill. Marvelon is a low dose contraceptive pill. It contains ethinyl estradiol and desogestrol as active ingredients . These are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. Mechanism of action : - It prevents ovulation ( that prevents release of egg from ovaries) - it makes the cervical mucus thick and hence prevents sperm from entering the womb and fertilising the egg. - It also makes the linning of the womb unfavourable for implantation off egg. How to ... more

Advantages Advantages Completely pain free periods!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Makes you a bit irritable at times

Marvelon is the second brand of pill I have been on. As the pill I tried before it put me through what was one of the worst experiences of my life, I didn't expect Marvelon to work half as well as it did and thought it was a nightmare just waiting to happen. However, 6 months later, I'm still happy to be on it. WHAT IS IT, AND HOW MANY DO I TAKE? The pill is generally used to prevent pregnancy. It does this by releasing female sex hormones, preventing an egg from being released - and therefore, theoretically preventing pregnancy. It is taken for 21 days, followed by a 7 day break. At some ... more

Advantages Advantages Prevents pregnancy, can help lower lipid levels.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not good for smokers

Marvelon is a contraceptive for use as regular contraceptive. It contains both synthetic progesterone an synthetic oestrogen. These hormones act on the female genital tract and certain areas in the brain to prevent the release of an ovum (egg) from the ovaries, hence preventing pregnancy. MArvelon is different from the emmergency contraceptive Levonorgestrel (the morning after pill - Levonelle) in that it contains a much smaller amount of hormone. The morning after pill is taken in two doses after sex. Marvelon is designed to be taken at the same time each day for 21 days followed by a seven ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to use, seems reliable, periods are ok.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Acne, AWFUL mood swings, etc.

I've tried a long succession of contraceptive pills over the past few years, with a wide variety of annoying side effects. Marvelon is the latest one my doctor has shunted me onto in an attempt to find something I can tolerate. It's a standard sort of monophasic combined pill - all the pills are the same dosage (fairly low, apparently) - You take one pill a day for 3 weeks, then have a week off. The 'periods' I've had in these breaks have been ok, not too heavy or painful. About the same as my natural periods, in fact. (Which has been a nice change after my experience with the POP - see my ... more

    Advantages Advantages Convenient

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I was shunted on to Marvelon about 18 months ago when I was 19. I'd been taking Microgynon 30 which caused me to have constant headaches and bad skin, then Dianette which didn't improve either my skin or my headaches, then the mini pill, which I couldn't take regularly enough due to my lifestyle. I was put on Marvelon having discussed the idea of the coil, injection and several other methods of contraception with my GP. I was suffering from bad acne, terrible headaches due to the other pills, crippling menstrual cramps and back pain. I was told that Marvelon should help all of these symptoms ... more

Advantages Advantages no pregnancy, MUCH better periods

    Disadvantages Disadvantages worried about risks

I started taking Marvelon when I was 14 years old because of really painful and irregular periods. I'm still on it now and I'm 27, though there have been breaks along the way. The longest of these breaks was after the infamous Pill Scare in 1995 when doctors thought third-generation combined pills, like Marvelon, gave women a higher risk of deep-vein thrombosis. I tried several other brands which didn't suit me and ended up oing to ask for my Marvelon back - the doctor told me the risks were still lower than being run over by a bus. Basically with Marvelon I have absolutely no negative side ... more
