    Advantages Advantages Cheap

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No online shopping

No I haven’t, got religion, but I did have a near religious experience in Matalan the other day. It’s my favourite shop for buying clothes at the moment. I have heard Matalan called many names, over the years, Tatalan, Tattyland, and several less flattering ones, but personally, I think it’s a great (cheap) shop. Not so tatty actually, as I was in there just yesterday to purchase two jackets, and one pair of trousers of the finest quality, I’ll have you know. Yes cheap it may be, and cheerful yes, but not tatty and not rubbish. Matalan is like one of those big warehouse type of shops, where ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheaper than the high street , most things under one roof, parking on site (usually)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be messy and sometimes the staff are unhelpful

This was my very first review but I have decided to edit it a bit here and there as Matalan has been re-vamped and needed a bit more recommendation from yours truly. I was a bit hard on the store originally but now I can safely say its well worth joining. The two things I am good at in life as my husband says is shopping and eating, so I hope these few words of wisdom help you in your quest to hunt out a bargain in the January sales. WHAT IS MATALAN? Matalan first came to this country in 1985. It's an American idea that came over here courtesy of its founder John Hargreaves. Matalan claims ... more

Advantages Advantages Huge range, Stylish, Cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Gets very very busy

Matalan is a general store selling high quality, stylish fashions and home ware at absolute bargain prices. Founded in 1985, Matalan now has 135 stores throughout Britain and aims to have 200 by the year 2005. So how do they manage to be so cheap? Well, basically because they have enormous outlets on out-of-town retail parks rather than in high-rent shopping centres in city centres. Also, they buy in incredible bulk direct from the manufacturers. They also operate as a shopping ‘club’ whereby you have to be a member (joining fee one pound) in order to shop there. Unlike other ... more

Advantages Advantages Inexpensive clothing for children and adults

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not much in the way of larger sizes

I love shopping at Matalan, it is very close to where we live (10 mins walk) and saves me the hassle of going into the city centre. To be able to shop at Matalan you need to join and apply for a lifetime member’s pass. The members card will cost you £1 and the process is done there and then instantly, you just need to fill in a few details, name, address etc pay your pound and then its all done. They do not accept payment for your membership card by debit/credit card it has to be paid in cash but most debit/credit cards, cash or cheque, can pay goods. They have quite a large range of ... more

Advantages Advantages Good prices, good variety

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be some tat in here

Matalan is the sort of shop where you would never have the same shopping experience twice! Sometimes I have been in and found absolutely nothing but rubbish and other times I have come out with all sorts of goodies. Firstly you need to know that, to shop at Matalan, you need to be a member. This is easy enough, just fill in a form get your card and away you go. You need the card to make your purchases - the till won't operate unless the card is swiped. Other than that I don't know of any benefits to be had, so I don't really see the point! There's no discount for being a card holder or ... more

Advantages Advantages cheap clothes, excellent sales

Disadvantages Disadvantages can get very busy, most stores are in out of town locations

The very first Matalan store was opened in Preston in 1985 and over the past 16 years has grown to become a brilliant success story. Matalans sell a wide variety of womans, mens and childrens clothes as well as an extensive range of homeware goods. If you like to wear named clothes then Matalan is well worth a look as they sell names such as Wranger, Lee Cooper, Playtex, Sloggi and of course Kelvin Klein. If named clothes aren't your thing then maybe have a look at their own range of clothes which offers excellent value for money, although do be aware of the sizing as they do tend to come up ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap. Varied products.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not all areas have one. Annoying TV advert!

Matalan was one of those shops that I had heard of, but never had the opportunity to visit. Friends and work collegues had told me of this wonderful store where one could buy all manner of products at reasonable prices. Where was this mythical land and why had I not been there? Not being a driver I had to pursuade my parents that it would be in their best interests to go and check out our nearest branch, in Sheffield, and that I would accompany them. My mum, never one to pass up the chance to shop 'til she drops was a pushover and my dad never really had much of a choice in the matter after ... more

A bit of background on Matalan! Matalan was founded in 1985 by John Hargreaves and currently boasts over 200 stores and the 200th opened in September 06. So I'm guessing there's well over 200 stores now eh lol There own range is called Papaya but are also known for stocking Lee's, Brookers and Easy jeans in a variety of sizes and lengths and most sizes go from size 8-20 in ladies clothing but in my store the jeans that are not their own range (Papaya) only got to a 16. I'm not going to review men's clothing , as a single girl I have not much clue bout the men's or kids stuff but I can say my ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages long queues

John Hargreaves, the chairman who founded Matalan in 1985 owns about 69% of the company. It is so far one of my favourite shops when I look for baby clothes or home necessities. The nearest to my home is in Perth (just about 20 miles away) but they have more than 100 branches all over the country. You can find out the closest to your place by logging onto the website. Basically it sells a wide range of cloth, house ware from bed linen to bathroom accessories but also kitchen, lighting, luggage…It is based on the US warehouse concept. When you hear of warehouse you can expect to find ... more

Matalan is a discount store which stocks a variety of clothing and homewares. My father has been a member for years and used to drag me round there telling me it was great stuff. Back then I never thought it was great at all, they certainly had lots of stuff my Dad would buy but it wasn't my taste. Well now I've matured and my tastes are still pretty much the same but Matalan have also matured and now we are in harmony. ~~~Membership~~~ To shop at Matalan you do need to be a member. Membership is a costly business, its £1 for a year. You just pop into a store, fill out a form with your name ... more
