...trainee teachers prepare for the Mathematics QTS skills test. I have not used the disk as I passed the test before getting to it, but can look back and say the questions on it are good practice, and also give a good indication of where knowledge is lacking, as do the self assessment questions.
I have the paperback version of the book, which I have seen at a variety of prices, between £16 and £19.99. This might sound like a lot of money for a Maths ... ...or you just need some ideas on ways to explain things to pupils who are struggling, then I think it is well worth the money. It's only 341 pages long, and doesn't take up too much space.
I woudl recommend this book, it is one the I'm sure I will refer back to every now and again as Maths has a habit of finding it's way out of my brain.

Advantages: An overview useful to revise own knowledge Disadvantages: Well It's math isn't it?!
We had to buy this book for my teaching degree, as it covers the National Curriculum, Numeracy strategy and QTS basic skills tests. It has 27 chapters covering all of the topics that need to covered throughout the primary phase.Each chapter begins with a brief "pupils should be taught to:" and then bullet points what the chapter will go on to cover. It then explains the topic using a simple question and answer system, e.g:
"What is meant by saying ... ...The chapter has a series of self-assessment questions (the answers are at the back). It then concludes with a summary of teaching points.
My University gets us to attempt all of the self assessment questions, with the aim to uncovering our weaknesses, so that we can work on them more fully.
The book is also useful whilst teaching, as it explains the maths in simple terms, so makes a good reference point for any future teaching.
